The Battle of Porta Panama is a conflict of the First Alliance-PLANT War, featured in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.

Prelude[]

Less than three weeks following their defeat at JOSH-A, ZAFT retaliated by attacking the Panama Base. The goal of the attack was to destroy the Panama Mass Driver, cutting off the Alliance’s supply line to their Lunar Base.[1]

The Battle[]

The ZAFT forces began the battle with a combined surface-to-land missile attack from multiple Vosgulov-class submarines, and an aerial bombardment from several squadrons of AMF-101 DINNs. The initial assault weakened Porta Panama defenses enough for ZAFT mobile suits to be deployed on land. While facing resistance in the air by VTOL Fighters and on the ground by Linear Gun Tanks, they were quickly destroyed by attacking ZGMF-1017 GINNs

While the ZAFT forces were encircling the base, the Alliance forces deployed their new mass-produced mobile suit, the GAT-01 Strike Dagger, to counter their attackers. The Strike Daggers of the 13th Autonomous Corps engaged ZAFT's mobile suits, and quickly proved to be more than a match against the GINNs in combat, shifting the battle in the Alliance’s favor. In addition to the Strike Daggers, a GAT-01D Long Dagger, piloted by EA Coordinator pilot, Jean Carry, took part in the battle and destroyed several GINNs and DINNs, before engaging Yzak Joule and his GAT-X102 Duel Gundam.[2]

However, ZAFT deployed their new Gungnir EMP weapons. After activating, the Gungnirs disabled all Alliance mobile suits and military equipment in the area and destroyed the Porta Panama mass driver. With no means to fight back, the EA forces surrendered to ZAFT. However, as revenge for the ZAFT personnel that perished during Operation Spitbreak, a number of GINN pilots slaughtered the surrendering Alliance soldiers, taking no prisoners.[1] However, Yzak disapproved of the slaughter, and choose to spare Jean Carry.[2]

Aftermath[]

With the last mass driver in Alliance hands destroyed, ZAFT had effectively cut off the Alliance's space forces from Earth-based resources. Desperate to re-establish their supply route to their lunar base, the Earth Alliance launched two attempts to gain control of a mass driver. The first attempt was during the Battle of Orb, where after several failed attempts to persuade the nation to join the Earth Alliance, the EA issued an ultimatum, that if Orb did not surrender, they would take the country by force.[3] The EA ultimately won the battle, however, Orb activated the mass driver's self destruct, making the EA's victory a hollow one.[4] After the failure at Orb, the EA attempted to reclaim the mass driver from the Victoria Base. They successfully retook the base and mass driver during the Third Battle of Victoria, and re-established their supply route.[5]

After the battle, Jean Carry, no longer of use to the Earth Alliance, made his way to the Junk Guild, and eventually became a pilot in the Three Ships Alliance.[2]
