Canard Pars (カナード・パルス?) is a character introduced in the manga Mobile Suit Gundam SEED X Astray. He was a member of the Earth Alliance and Eurasian Federation and pilot of the CAT1-X1/3 Hyperion Gundam Unit 1 until the ending stages of the First Alliance-PLANT War. After the war, Canard became a mercenary and piloted the YMF-X000A/H Dreadnought H.

Personality & Character[]

Initially, traumatized by his experiences at the Eurasian Federation facility, Canard was willing to obtain freedom by any means necessary, even if the alternative was death, despite having no idea what he would do after becoming free. This changed after his encounter with a mysterious stranger, who convinced Canard that he should become the "real deal" by defeating the successful Ultimate Coordinator - Kira Yamato.

Following his encounter with the stranger, Canard became obsessed with finding and killing Kira and even gave up escaping the Eurasian Federation to do so. His obsession filled him with hatred and anger and he showed no hesitation in killing innocents and defenseless opponents to accomplish his goal. He was also willing to go to any length to become stronger in order to obtain the power necessary to kill Kira.

Following Prayer's death, Canard realized that killing others just to survive was not the way of life he desired. Having finally given up on killing Kira, he decided to carry on Prayer's ideals and forge his own path.

Skills & Abilities[]

As a failed Ultimate Coordinator, Canard's reflexes were noted to be exceptional even for a Coordinator.[1] Though he often relied on the overwhelming power of his Hyperion Gundam and its "Armure Lumiere" barrier, Canard was capable of quick thinking and improvisation when necessary, as shown when he improvised a way to destroy the "Armure Lumiere"-protected CAT1-X2/3 Hyperion Gundam Unit 2 with his heavily damaged Hyperion.[2] Despite mostly operating alone, he was also a capable team leader, as demonstrated when he destroyed a team of ZGMF-1017 GINN piloted by elite pilots in conjunction with a team of TS-MA2 Moebius.[3]

History[]

Origin[]

Being tested by Eurasian Federation scientists

Canard was created at Mendel as part of the Ultimate Coordinator Project. However, he was considered a failure and planned to be destroyed, but a lab assistant took pity on him and allowed him to escape. Unfortunately, at some point after escaping Mendel, he was captured by the Eurasian Federation, who forced him to undergo painful and traumatic tests to learn how to create an Ultimate Coordinator, treating him as nothing more than a guinea pig. However, the Eurasian scientists failed to obtain any useful information from him, which they blamed on his status as a failure.[1]

Meeting the stranger[]

Meeting a stranger

At some point during his captivity, Canard escaped the lab where he was held and made his way to a desert town. He hid at a Junk Guild facility after knocking out two wokers there, but the transmitter on his arm suddenly started beeping, revealing his location. Canard attempted to remove the transmitter with a cutting laser, but it proved too durable. He then tried to remove it by severing his arm with the laser, but was interrupted by a mysterious man wearing sunglasses.[1]

Canard immediately tried to attack the stranger, but he easily dodged all of his punches and kicks before sending him back with a slap. The stranger then assured Canard that he was just passing by and was not there to capture him and remarked that his reflexes were good even for a Coordinator. As Canard gave up fighting, realizing that he could not beat the man in front of him, the stranger remarked that the look on his face and the transmitter on his wrist had told him that he escaped from the nearby lab. The stranger then remarked that he did not think that Canard could escape and wondered how many Earth Dollars he could get for handing him over.[1]

SXA Canard learns Kira

Becoming obsessed with Kira Yamato

Remembering his experience at the lab, Canard asked the stranger to kill him instead. The stranger appeared surprised that Canard would choose death over captivity, to which Canard replied that as a failure, trying to live longer would be a mistake. The stranger correctly deduced that Canard was a failed Ultimate Coordinator, much to Canard's shock. Canard asked him how he knew, and the stranger replied that he knew from his abilities and the stranger's own past connections with Mendel. The stranger then asked Canard what he would do when he obtained freedom, to which Canard replied that he did not know, and that he initially wanted to take revenge on the people who created him and the entire world, but now felt that doing so would be meaningless. The stranger remarked that it was interesting how he felt taking revenge against the world was pointless, ominously remarking that someone else would certainly do it in his stead.[1]

The stranger suggested to Canard to try and become the "real deal" by defeating the successful Ultimate Coordinator. He then told Canard not to be afraid of his chains and to instead use them to sharpen his fangs and claws and become stronger. As Eurasian soldiers arrived to take Canard into custody, the stranger decided to leave, not wanting to be seen, but not before telling Canard the name of the successful Ultimate Coordinator he must defeat: Kira Yamato. As he was subdued by the Eurasian soldiers and held at gunpoint, Canard began obsessively chanting Kira Yamato's name, holding onto it as his sole source of hope.[1]

Service in Task Force X[]

SXA Canard TFX

As a member of Task Force X

Following ZAFT's attack on Artemis on January 27, C.E. 71, Gerard Garcia was assigned to lead Task Force X, the Eurasian Federation's mobile suit development unit. Canard was assigned to this unit as the test pilot of CAT1-X1/3 Hyperion Gundam Unit 1, a prototype mobile suit developed by the Eurasian Federation. However, he constantly disobeyed Garcia's orders and only used his position to search for clues about Kira Yamato. Haivng learned that Kira Yamato had become an ace of the OMNI Enforcer and a Gundam pilot, Canard began seeking Gundams.[4]

His search eventually brought him to his birthplace, Mendel, where he had hoped to find the Three Ships Alliance resupplying. Instead, he encountered Junk Guild member Lowe Guele in the MBF-P02 Gundam Astray Red Frame. He demanded to know if Lowe knew Kira, but before Lowe could answer, he dismissively said that a junker like him could not possibly have known an ace pilot like Kira, unaware that Lowe helped save Kira's life. Just as Canard seemed to be leaving, however, he told Lowe that he could not let him live now that he has seen the Hyperion. He then fired his beam submachine gun at the Red Frame, saying that his Hyperion should be the only Gundam there is, before flying back to Artemis. However, Lowe survived, having blocked most of the hits using the Gerbera Straight.[5]

After returning to Artemis, Canard was assigned a new mission by Garcia. While en route to the mission destination, however, he encountered Serpent Tail's MBF-P03secondG Gundam Astray Blue Frame Second G and ZGMF-1017 Elijah's GINN, piloted by Gai Murakumo and Elijah Kiel respectively. Seeing that Gai was also piloting a Gundam, Canard asked Gai if he knew Kira. When he did not answer, Canard attacked the two. Gai fired his sniper rifle at the Hyperion, only for the beam to be blocked by its "Armure Lumiere" shield.[6]

After a fierce battle, Gai discovered that the "Armure Lumiere" was impervious to both ballistic and beam weapons, but vulnerable to anti-beam coated weapons before retreating with Elijah. Canard was about to give pursuit, but the barrier's five minute time limit was up. Frustrated, he promised he would finish the "blue Gundam" next time. Just then, he received a communication from Task Force X officer Meriol Pistis, telling him to abandon his current mission and rendezvous with the Ortygia for an emergency. He complained that he was searching for Kira's Gundam, but Pistis informed him that there was a top priority order from high command and that it was also related to the Gundam. Reluctantly, Canard returned. At the Ortygia, Garcia informed him that the Eurasian Federation deciphered encrypted ZAFT communications ordering the "retrieval of the nuclear engine-equipped mobile suit". Garcia believed that this transmission meant ZAFT had developed the means to nullify the Neutron Jammer and ordered Task Force X to recover said mobile suit. Canard cut off the communication before he could finish, elated at the possibility of equipping the Hyperion with a nuclear engine and granting it unlimited use of the "Armure Lumiere", allowing him to defeat Kira.[7]

The nuclear-powered mobile suit in question was the YMF-X000A Dreadnought Gundam piloted by Prayer Reverie. It was recovered by the Junk Guild ship Re:HOME, which soon came under attack by ZAFT forces seeking to recover the Dreadnought. Canard intervened in the Hyperion, inadvertently saving Prayer and the Dreadnought from ZAFT forces.[8] Canard was surprised to see the Red Frame still intact, while Lowe warned Prayer that the Hyperion was no ordinary enemy. Their confrontation was interrupted by Mikhail Coast in the ZGMF-1017M GINN High Maneuver Type, the leader of the ZAFT elite unit, who proceeded to lead an attack on the Hyperion, saying that he would get rid of it first. Canard remarked that while Mikhail's movement was decent for a GINN, it takes more than numbers to win a battle. He then launched a signal flare, causing the Ortygia to deploy six TS-MA2 Moebius.[3]

The ZAFT pilots dismissed the mobile armors, saying that they were no match for mobile suits. Canard replied that it was not the performance of weapons, but how they were used, that decides the outcome of a battle. He then deployed the 360 degree barrier of the "Armure Lumiere" and charged into the middle of the GINNs, firing wildly at them. The beam SMG's shots damaged the GINNs, but destroyed none of them. However, the Moebius soon moved in and finished off all of the GINNs while the Ortygia destroyed their Laurasia-class mothership. Mikhail, the only survivor of the unit, was forced to retreat.[3]

After the Ortygia docked with the Re:HOME, Eurasian Alliance forces subdued the latter's crew. On Canard's order, they disassembled the Red Frame to examine it, only to find that it was not the mobile suit they were looking for. Since the ship contained a massive number of mobile suit parts and the computer was protected, they were unable to find the nuclear engine mobile suit quickly. Canard ordered the use of a quantum computer virus to take control of the ship's systems. However, George Glenn, who was unaffected by the quantum virus, rescued the crew using a secret compartment and cut off Canard and the Alliance soldiers from the Red Frame's hangar.

As the crew made their way to the hangar, Gai suddenly broke into the ship in the MBF-P03secondL Gundam Astray Blue Frame Second L. Gai explained that he was here to return the stolen head of the Dreadnought, which contained its N-Jammer Canceller, because the OMNI Enforcer had already acquired its blueprint. The Junk Guild quickly installed the head onto the Dreadnought, finishing just as Canard and the Alliance soldiers cut their way into the hangar. Canard was shocked to see yet another Gundam.

Powerless against the Dreadnought, Canard threatened to destroy the Re:HOME by overloading its engine. However, at Lowe's suggestion, Prayer fired the Dreanought's beam rifle at the hangar wall, piercing both hangars and hitting the Ortygia. Prayer threatened to destroy the Ortygia with the next shot unless the Eurasian Alliance forces stop interfering with the ship and retreat, forcing them to withdraw. Soon after the Ortygia left, Canard deployed in the Hyperion, trying to capture the Dreadnought, with the Dreadnought deploying in response.

The Dreadnought attacked the Hyperion using its "Pristis" beam reamers. Canard severed their wires using the beam knife on his beam SMG. To his surprise, the detached beam reamers continued to attack him, being controlled via quantum communication using the DRAGOON system. Caught off guard, the Hyperion lost its right arm and its right wing binder, making it unable to deploy the 360 degree barrier. Its computer system also suffered an error. As Prayer demanded Canard to surrender, Canard despaired that he would never be able to surpass Kira. Just then, the Hyperion's system suddenly rebooted. Vowing to never lose as long as he lives, Canard drew a beam knife and activated the left arm "Armure Lumiere" before charging toward the Dreadnought. However, the Hyperion was once again defeated by the beam reamers, this time losing its left arm and right leg.

Canard and the heavily damaged Hyperion were later recovered by the Ortygia. Despite his wounds, Canard demanded that they continue to pursue the Junk Guild. However, Pistis informed Canard that the Hyperion was no longer operable and that he was in no condition to fight, but Canard insisted that in order to become a true Ultimate Coordinator, he must never lose until he fights Kira. Therefore, he must defeat Prayer before facing Kira. Pistis replied that since retrieving the Dreadnought was their mission, they would not stop pursuing the Junk Guild. However, she told Canard not to strain himself.

Defection[]

Later, in an attempt to draw out the Dreadnought, Canard attacked Junk Guild supply station 15B in a Moebius. In response, Prayer surrendered in the Dreadnought, asking Canard to stop the attack. Delighted with the capture of the Dreadnought, Garcia reported the news to his superior. However, his superior was displeased that he acted without order to obtain the N-Jammer Canceller and, much to his shock, ordered the disbandment of Task Force X. His superior explained that since the Atlantic Federation had already obtained the NJC, the Eurasian Federation allied with it and adopted the Atlantic Federation-developed Dagger series as their mobile suit. He also ordered the development of the CAT1-X series frozen and Canard to be returned to the laboratory.

Canard questioned why Prayer surrendered to him. Prayer replied that Canard's hatred only grew stronger when Prayer first faced him and that his hatred would not be quenched even if they were to fight again. Canard simply replied that it would end when either he kills Prayer or Prayer kills him.

SXA Canard survives

Having defeated Hyperion Unit 2, Canard proclaims that he would always survive

Just then, Pistis warned Canard that Garcia had just issued an order for his arrest. However, before Garcia's soldiers could board the Ortygia, Pistis launched the ship and escaped from the Artemis. In response, Garcia ordered Balsam Arend, a self-proclaimed ace pilot who only had experience in simulator, to pursue in the CAT1-X2/3 Hyperion Gundam Unit 2. Though the repair on the Hyperion Unit 1 was incomplete due to missing parts, Canard still chose to deploy in it.[2]

Balsam deployed the 360 degree "Armure Lumiere" barrier, thinking it made him invincible. Meanwhile, the heavily damaged Unit 1 only had its left arm and left wing binder's "Armure Lumiere" generators left. However, Canard readjusted its left wing binder generator, causing it to project a lance instead of a shield. Using this beam lance, Canard pierced the "Armure Lumiere" barrier and destroyed Unit 2's head, causing its barrier to deactivate. Canard then immediately destroyed Unit 2's cockpit using a beam knife, killing Balsam.[2]

Using Unit 2 for spare parts, the Hyperion Unit 1 was fully repaired. Canard then decided to attack the Ptolemaeus Lunar Base to capture a NJC. Prayer asked Canard to use the Dreadnought's NJC to stop him from hurting more people, but Canard stated that he would not touch the Dreadnought, since he would eventually defeat it in a fight. Pistis explained that while the nuclear generator technology was common since before the war and could easily be fitted onto the Hyperion, analysis of the Dreadnought's NJC revealed that it was impossible to replicate with Eurasian Federation's technology. Therefore, they would have to capture one of the Atlantic Federation's mass produced NJCs.

Assault on Ptolemaeus[]

Soon, Canard attacked the 7th supply port of the lunar base, meeting no resistance until he began attacking due to the Hyperion's Eurasian Alliance IFF code. Many GAT-01 Strike Daggers deployed to stop the Hyperion, but Canard dispatched all of them and successfully found a NJC, mounting it onto Hyperion's left waist. As he left, he was confronted by a team of Striker Daggers and GAT-01A1 Daggers led by Morgan Chevalier in the GAT-01A1+AQM/E-X04 Gunbarrel Dagger.[9]

Morgan quickly deployed his Gunbarrels, launching an all-range attack on the Hyperion. However, Canard was able to evade the initial attack and deploy the 360 degree "Armure Lumiere" barrier. Even the concentrated fire from Morgan's entire team was unable to break through the barrier. Seeing his team slaughtered by Canard's return fire, Morgan ordered them to pull back and attempted to concentrate fire from all of his Gunbarrels on a single "Armure Lumiere" generator. However, Canard was barely able to shift the Hyperion away, causing the barrier to take the hit instead. He remarked that the attack might have worked had it connected, before firing a beam cannon at Morgan's Gunbarrel Dagger. At this moment, Morgan received a telepathic message from Prayer, telling him to detach his backpack. Morgan complied, causing him to barely avoid the beam, losing only the backpack. He then immediately retreated.[9]

With the NJC and nuclear engine installed, Canard began calling the Hyperion Unit 1 "Super Hyperion". Piloting the Super Hyperion, Canard brutally destroyed a ZAFT mobile suit team that had come to attack the Ortygia, even shooting a GINN that had already been crippled and whose pilot was begging for help. Soon after, Gai caught up to the Ortygia in the Blue Frame Second L and delivered Lowe's message to Prayer, asking him to return to Ame-no-Mihashira to receive an upgrade for the Dreadnought. Canard was delighted at the idea of the Dreadnought receiving an upgrade to match the Super Hyperion and allowed Prayer to leave as long as he agreed to return and fight him.[10]

Decisive battle[]

After the Dreadnought was fitted with a DRAGOON backpack and earned the nickname of X Astray from Lowe, Prayer and Canard met in the abandoned colony cluster in Lagrange 4. Prayer once again asked Canard to stop fighting, but Canard simply replied that he was tired of hearing it and fired at the X Astray. Prayer relented, saying that he would stop Canard with all his power. Canard deployed the Super Hyperion's 360 degree "Armure Lumiere" barrier, which could now operate indefinitely. Prayer attacked using the beam reamers, but they were unable to penetrate the barrier and were easily destroyed by Canard using a beam saber formed from the Super Hyperion's arm-mounted "Armure Lumiere" generator.[11]

Prayer eventually deployed the X Astray's DRAGOONs, but they were still not able to penetrate the Super Hyperion's barrier. During the battle, Canard exclaimed that his existence can only be allowed if he fights and wins. Prayer replied that Canard did not require battle or victory, and that as a Ultimate Coordinator, he was endowed with great hopes and dreams by others. Canard retorted that he was only a failed attempt and that his abilities were only useful for fighting, something that Prayer, who was born with special powers, would not understand. However, Prayer explained that he was a clone of a Moebius Zero pilot created by the military for his high spatial awareness, which was why he does not want to live as a weapon.

Hearing this, Canard was ecstatic, declaring that they were both created for battle and that there was nothing for them to do but fight. However, Prayer retorted that neither of them were created for fighting, and that it was up to him to decide what his goal was and how to use his abilities. Canard dismissed him, saying that he was simply a child who was too used to peace, but Prayer replied that it was the peaceful life that he lived and the love from his friends that supported him. Canard denied that feelings amounted to anything, but Prayer stated that even he lived within the love of other, including Prayer's.

Prayer then used the DRAGOONs to generate a tetrahedral barrier around the Super Hyperion, saying that it represented his love for Canard. Canard angrily fired once more, but Prayer's barrier somehow disrupted the monophase shield, causing the Super Hyperion's attacks to disperse inside it. Canard violently tried to break free from the barrier, eventually crashing into a colony, before firing the "Forfanterie" beam cannons at it at full power. The impact finally shattered the barrier, but the backlash heavily damaged the Super Hyperion and caused its nuclear engine to overload. The resulting explosion destroyed the Super Hyperion, but Prayer shielded Canard from the blast using the X Astray.[11]

SXA Prayer death

Prayer dies in Canard's arms

After the explosion, both Canard and Prayer climbed out of the cockpit, but Prayer soon collapsed. As Canard held him, Prayer explained that his cloning process was imperfect, and that he would soon die. Canard asked him why he would help a failure like him, to which Prayer explained that neither of them were alone and the power of feelings connects everyone. He remarked that it was nice that he had Canard by his side in the end before passing away in Canard's arms. As Canard carried away Prayer's body, he asked Kazahana Azure why Prayer had to die and a failure like him was the one who lived. He then questioned whether this was the victory he had hoped and how he would live from now on, before screaming to the sky.

Post War Period[]

Following the end of hostilities during the First Alliance-PLANT War, Canard reformed Task Force X into a mercenary group known as Mercenary Unit X.[12] When ZAFT attempted to reclaim GENESIS Alpha from the Junk Guild, Gai and Elijah helped defend it. As they were occupied with two squadrons, ZAFT deployed additional forces from another direction. Just then, Canard unexpectedly appeared in the YMF-X000A/H Dreadnought H and destroyed the ZAFT reinforcements, saying that he was here to repay his debt to Lowe.[13][14]

Several months later, Canard fulfilled Prayer wishes and delivered the N-Jammer Canceller to Earth. He then handed Prayer's necklace to Reverend Malchio and informed him of Prayer's death. Malchio told him that Prayer did not die in vain and that his feelings are now inherited by Canard. As Canard walked on the sandy beaches of Orb, he saw Kira Yamato walking on the beach as well. However, he ignored him, deciding to forge his own path instead.[11]

Pre-Second Alliance-PLANT War[]

In C.E. 73, Canard and Mercenary Unit X fought alongside the Junk Guild and Serpent Tail to defend GENESIS Alpha from an Earth Alliance/The Clan attack force.[15] After the "Break The World" Incident, Canard, along with Serpent Tail, was hired by Matias to destroy The Clan’s space station. During the battle, Canard linked the Dreadnought H's nuclear reactor to the Blue Frame Second L's Lohengrin Launcher to destroy the station and its defending TSX-MA717/ZD Pergrande mobile armors.[16]

Gundam SEED VS Astray[]

During the Second Alliance-PLANT War, Canard interfered in the fight between ND HE and Rondo Gina Sahaku. He demanded from them the location of Prayer Reverie and intends to kill him as he know this Prayer is a fake.[17] After defeating ND HE, he was brought to the base where the carbon human clone of Prayer was present. Canard then learned about the true motives of the clone along with Gai and Lowe, they then jointly defeated him in a battle. After the battle, Canard tried to kill the clone, which was what the clone wanted, but was stopped by Lowe, who then suggested a better way out for the clone.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • The identity of the mysterious man who told Canard about Kira Yamato was not revealed in the manga, but was heavily implied to be Rau Le Creuset, and was outright stated to be Rau in Canard's profile in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny: Generation of C.E. and Canard's special dialogue with Rau in Super Robot Wars W. However, in The Opening Door, Rau stated that he did not know the name "Kira Yamato" until Athrun told him, and had assumed the Ultimate Coordinator was killed by the Blue Cosmos as an infant, so the truth is unclear.
  • Canard Pars is voiced by Souichiro Hoshi, the same voice actor as Kira Yamato.
  • Canard was notably one of the few Cosmic Era characters who used the term "Gundam".
  • Canard appears in the Gundam Extreme Vs. series as the pilot for the Hyperion Unit 1 and the Dreadnought H. Canard's obsessions with Kira also causes him to interrogate units with similar designs or functions, be it other Gundams or units with anything like the DRAGOON System. Aside from this, he is cautious towards the similarly volatile EMS-10 Zudah and advises Jean-Luc Duvall to rewrite the software around his unit's Saturn Engine instead.
  • Canard appeared and met directly with his fellow Ultimate Coordinator, Kira Yamato, in Super Robot Wars W. At first, Canard considered Kira as his enemy, however, the player is given the option of convincing him to join the Neue Wärter (the player faction). In the ending of the game, if he was convinced, Prayer Reverie gives him his Dreadnought Gundam. If he was not convinced, Prayer asks Kazahana Azure to deliver the Dreadnought to Canard for him.
