The Clyne Faction is a faction introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.
Overview[]
The Clyne Faction is an organization formed from PLANT politicians, ZAFT soldiers and civilians loyal to the ideals of Siegel Clyne, leader of the PLANT Supreme Council's Moderate Faction. The group's goals are to fight against the anti-Natural and Coordinator supremacism policies of Patrick Zala’s Radical Faction and bring an end to the increasingly genocidal war between PLANT and the Earth Alliance.
The Clyne Faction was initially commanded by former PLANT Supreme Council Chairman Siegel Clyne, however, after his assassination, his daughter Lacus Clyne took over, with Andrew Waltfeld, a much-decorated ZAFT commander, acting as her military advisor and second-in-command. The Clyne Faction’s main activities were conducted on its flagship, the FFMH-Y101 Eternal, while other operations took place in or near the PLANT Colonies. After the Eternal left the PLANT Colonies, the Clyne Faction became a founding member of the Three Ships Alliance, and acted as a major source of supplies and information for the TSA.
History[]
First Alliance-PLANT War[]
The Clyne Faction was unofficially created on May 5, C.E. 71, when Lacus Clyne assisted Kira Yamato in stealing the ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam.[1] Following the theft and the failure of Operation Spitbreak, Patrick Zala fabricated a story that the Clynes were traitors who gave the Freedom to an Earth Alliance spy and informed the EA about the attack on JOSH-A.[2] Having branded the Clynes and their allies as traitors, Zala ordered a manhunt for them. Meanwhile, Siegel and Lacus went into hiding while promoting a campaign against Zala's regime.
Soon after, Patrick's son Athrun Zala tracked Lacus down to the White Symphony concert hall and confronted her about her actions at gunpoint. Lacus revealed to Athrun that she had given the Freedom to Kira, whom Athrun thought had died in their previous battle, and that she was committed to fighting by his side. Lacus then challenged Athrun's loyalty to ZAFT and his father, despite their increasingly genocidal ambitions. Before Athrun could answer her, Zala agents entered the building, intending to either arrest or kill Lacus. While Athrun got Lacus out of the line of fire, Clyne Faction members hidden inside the concert hall quickly killed the Zala agents. Afterward, Lacus informed Athrun that Kira was on Earth before leaving the building and moving to a new location.[2]
The Clyne Faction spent the following two months fighting a propaganda campaign against Zala's leadership and supremacist ideals.[3] In June, Zala's troops had located Siegel at a safe house and assassinated him and his guards.[3] With Siegel gunned down, Lacus became the sole leader of the Clyne Faction.
On July 1, the Clyne Faction seized the new prototype warship, the Eternal, and abandoned the PLANT Colonies due to increasing pressure from Zala's forces. Meanwhile, Clyne's agents rescued Athrun Zala, who had returned to PLANT and was arrested for betraying his father, and brought him to the Eternal. During the Eternal's escape, the ship was attacked by dozens of ZGMF-1017 GINNs and ZGMF-515 CGUEs, which were quickly incapacitated by the arrival of Kira Yamato and the Freedom Gundam. Afterward, Kira escorted the Eternal to the Mendel colony, where the Clyne Faction met with the rogue crew of the defected EA battleship Archangel and the remnant of the Orb Union military aboard the battleship Kusanagi.[4] Together, the three warships formed the Three Ships Alliance, a neutral organization dedicated to ending the war. Following the Eternal's departure from the PLANT Colonies, the Clyne Faction members who remained worked to supply the Three Ships Alliance with resources and information for the remainder of the war.[5]
