Edward Harrelson (エドワード·ハレルソン Edowādo Hareruson?) is a character introduced in the side story Mobile Suit Gundam SEED MSV. Edward also appeared in a short OVA promoting Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Astray, and the manga Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny Astray.

Personality & Character[]

Edward is a kind and gentle individual, known for his fun-loving personality, making jokes around friends and strangers alike. Edward is a loyalist of his homeland of South America, and cares deeply for his people, both soldiers and civilians, traits that earned him the trust of all his subordinates. He is said to be "the strange man who uses his fighter in close combat", which earned him the nickname "Ed the Ripper", although he dislikes it.

Skills & Abilities[]

He has an ordinary record as a fighter pilot, but when piloting mobile suits, he distinguished himself with excellent close combat skills. Every time he comes back from battle, his mobile suit is covered in oil from the enemy's unit as if it is soaked in blood. He held the rank of Lieutenant while he was still with the Earth Alliance forces.[1]

Physical Aspects & Clothing[]

History[]

First Alliance-PLANT War[]

Edward was born in C.E. 43 and, by age 28, he became a fighter pilot for the U.S.S.A., but was later integrated into the Earth Alliance's military when the Alliance conquered the U.S.S.A. Edward first pilots a F-7D Spearhead atmospheric fighter. It was while piloting the Spearhead that he earned the nickname "Ed the Ripper" after shearing a AME-WAC01 DINN Special Electronic Installation Type in half using his Spearhead's wing. When asked why he carried out such a strange attack, he claimed it was "just a sudden idea"; the truth however is that he was hung over, and did not realize he was on a collision course with the mobile suit until it was too late, resulting in the Spearhead's wing hitting the lightly-armored machine and ripping it in half.[2]

Ed was eventually transferred to mobile suit development and assigned a general purpose GAT-01 Strike Dagger. He later piloted the more powerful GAT-01D1 Duel Dagger, followed by the close combat type GAT-X133 Sword Calamity that made him a legend, and then the flight type GAT-333 Raider Full Spec. However, he switched back to his Sword Calamity, which has a custom logo of two crossed swords over a rose on the left shoulder, when the fighting shifted into space.[2] Ed piloted his Sword Calamity during the war's climax at the Second Battle of Jachin Due, where he fought against ZAFT pilot Mikhail Coast and Three Ships Alliance pilot Barry Ho.[3] During the battle, Ed witnessed the EA's use of Nuclear Missiles and was shocked by the lack of respect for human life.

South American War for Independence[]

After the end of open hostilities during the war, Ed left the Earth Alliance, taking with him his Sword Calamity and a Raider Full Spec, and returned home where he became the most prominent member of the U.S.S.A. rebellion against the EA. Initially, the EA believed that if "Ed the Ripper, the Hero of South America" were to die, the people would lose heart and the rebellion would end. Thus, after he destroyed three Raider Full Spec units with his Sword Calamity, the EA forces sent several ace pilots after him so as to keep fighting to a minimum.[4]

He first engaged in battle with his former lover, the "White Whale" Jane Houston in her GAT-X255 Forbidden Blue along South America's west coast. However, thanks to Jess Rabble's intervention, the two reconciled their differences and rekindled their relationship. Jane then joined Ed as an ace pilot of the rebellion, using her Forbidden Blue to fight the EA's naval forces.[5]

Jane later informed Ed of the EA's plan to attack South America with missiles fired from space. To counter the attack, Ed went into space with his Raider Full Spec using an atmospheric exit/reentry capsule. However, the information Jane was given was a ruse in the likely case that she choose to side with Ed. He then engaged in battle with Morgan Chevalier and his GAT-01A1+AQM/E-X04 Gunbarrel Dagger in space. Morgan initially held the advantage with his multi-vector attack, but Ed gave as good as he got, destroying two of the gunbarrels. However, Morgan was well prepared and detached his AQM/E-X04 Gunbarrel Striker and used it as a remote weapon, entangling Ed's mobile suit in the wires and dragging it down to the upper atmosphere. Under normal circumstances, the Raider Full Spec should have been destroyed, but fortunately for Ed, a bit of debris was falling nearby and by using the debris as a shield alongside his mobile suit's Trans-Phase armor, he was able to reenter Earth safely.[6]

Later, the abilities of "Ed the Ripper" were put to the test when he was pitted against Rena Imelia in the Sword Calamity Unit 1. Ed defeated Rena, but was shot by her when he went to her downed mobile suit to check on her condition.[3] After this battle, Jess took Edward to former ZAFT ace pilot and doctor Mikhail Coast, where he was treated for his injuries.[7]
