Biological CPU (生体CPU Seitai CPU?) are artificially enhanced humans developed by the Earth Alliance's secret Extended Program, which is aimed at producing pilots for its mobile suits that would have comparable abilities as the Coordinators. This would later expand to include having fighting capabilities on par with the coordinators. There are two types of Biological CPU, the Boosted Man (ブーステッドマン Būsuteddoman?) and the Extended (エクステンデッド Ekusutendeddo?).

Overview[]

A product of the anti-coordinator movement, Logos and Blue Cosmos worked to develop enhanced soldiers that are able to rival coordinators for the Earth Alliance forces. Because they are against genetic manipulation, they resorted to workaround solutions such as cybernetic implantation, psychological programming, memory erasure, mental/emotional conditioning, drug treatments, physical conditioning, and child indoctrination to create super soldiers in the battlefield. Through their program, they were able to create two types: classified as Boosted Man and Extended. The boosted man is considered the first iteration and the extended as the second. Although Logos managed to create a soldier comparable to a coordinator and proven their mettle in combat, they are far from successful.

Classified as equipment, not even as human beings, they are the result of bleeding edge (advanced-but-unstable) development. As such, these CPUs have displayed signs of aggression, mental/emotional instability, violence, chemical dependency, anxiety, murderous intent, trouble with coordination, and trouble following orders. Because of their limited reliability, a team of scientists, technicians, and medics join them during operations. If they suffer an episode, they can immediately return to their ship for emergency treatment and stabilize themselves. Because of all their bodily modifications, only the medics of their team can treat them; they wouldn't survive long as POWs as opposing forces wouldn't know how to treat their bodies.

The boosted men served during the First Alliance-PLANT War and proved their value despite their limitations. After their demise, scientists of the Biological CPU program refined the process to create the extended. Although the extended displayed greater performance than their predecessors, they had their own limitations but had a greater influence in the Second Alliance-PLANT War. After Gilbert Durandal launched his Campaign Against Logos and exposed the misdeeds of the EA, Logos members went into hiding and Lord Djibril (leader of Logos and Blue Cosmos) was killed; the organization was destroyed. With all their CPUs gone and their leader dead, the CPU program is presumed to be gone as well. However, the Earth Alliance remains in power and can restart the program if they wanted to.

Boosted Man[]

In order to combat the Coordinators, the Earth Alliance experimentally injected some of their soldiers with drugs, had them undergo special training, and psychological manipulation to give them physical abilities greater than those of the Coordinators. The Boosted Man was created as a result of these processes. They're considered a "Biological CPU" by the upper echelons of the Earth Alliance and their entire past has been erased. The Boosted Men have micro-implants surgically installed in their brains and glands, and are mentally conditioned to eliminate their sense of fear and increase their aggression during combat. They are also given regular doses of a stimulant called "Gamma Glipheptin" to enhance their stamina and reaction speed to the utmost limit, allowing them to pilot specialized mobile suits with performance comparable to that of the one piloted by Coordinators. However, they suffer agonizing withdrawal symptoms as the effects of this stimulant wear off, forcing them to withdraw from battle when their time limit expires. Their addiction to and their need for periodic doses of the Gamma Glipheptin guaranteed their loyalty to the Alliance.

Extended[]

An enhanced human who has better cooperativeness and is less violent than the Boosted Man. The method of modification is the same as the Boosted Man's, through the administration of drugs, surgery, and training from an early age. However, in order to maintain their mental stability, the Extended's memory is periodically manipulated by a sleeping capsule called a "cradle". Because of these measures, they have superior communication skills compared to Boosted Man, and are capable of various maneuvers and coordination. In addition, because they occasionally go out of control, they are individually conditioned to respond to particular key phrases in order to control their behavior. Although these individualized "block words" are meant to restrain their actions, repeated use of them can send an Extended into a state of panic. Phantom Pain member Stella Loussier's block word is "death," Auel Neider's is "mother," and Sting Oakley's is "dream".

Other Enhancement[]

To allow those without high spatial awareness to control the TSX-MA717/ZD Pergrande's first-generation DRAGOON System, the three pilots of the mobile armor have been synchronized through surgical means. Each pilot controls one of the X, Y, and Z axes necessary to utilize the DRAGOON pods.

History[]

First Alliance-PLANT War[]

Three Boosted Men, Clotho Buer, Orga Sabnak and Shani Andras, were assigned as mobile suit pilots and worked directly under Blue Cosmos leader Muruta Azrael during the First Alliance-PLANT War. The CPUs made their debut late in the war, when the EA fought against ORB after the Cyclops was detonated. They displayed combat abilities that troubled even very strong Coordinators such as Kira Yamato and Athrun Zala. All three were killed in battle during the closing stages of the war at the Second Battle of Jachin Due.[1][2]

Second Alliance-PLANT War[]

Prior to the Second Alliance-PLANT War three new Biological CPUs of the Extended type were assigned to OMNI Enforcer’s Phantom Pain division. One by one, all three Extendeds were killed during the Second Alliance-PLANT War; Auel perished at the hands of Shinn Asuka's ZGMF-X56S/γ Blast Impulse Gundam in the Battle of Crete.[3] Stella died after her GFAS-X1 Destroy Gundam was destroyed by Kira Yamato's ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam in Battle of Berlin.[4] Sting was killed by Shinn's ZGMF-X42S Destiny Gundam in Operation Ragnarök.[5]

Notes & Trivia[]

  • Due to their required intake of Gamma Glipheptin and harsh withdrawal symptoms, English-speaking fans dubbed the Boosted Man "the Druggies", which tends to be used as an affectionate nickname rather than an insult.
  • Biological CPUs could be considered analogous to the Universal Century concept of Cyber Newtypes who were normal pilots enhanced to have Newtype abilities.
  • In Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Battle Destiny, Biological CPU and Extended are permanent one-time use abilities that can be applied to Natural Pilots to increase base stats and offset pilot type limitations for advanced MS. Aside from the stat bonuses and penalties, both abilities alter the personalities of the pilots (for example: Female Pilot 2 goes from being typically energetic to downright childish). Both are unlockable only in the EAF route:
    • Biological CPU: All base stats except Stamina +9, -20 as a side effect during critical status (MS HP at 30%).
    • Extended: All base stats except Stamina +12, -10 as a side effect during critical status (MS HP at 30%).
  • Due to censorship regarding drug references in children's programming, references to the Biological CPUs taking performance enhancing drugs were edited out of the cut version that aired on Cartoon Network's Toonami block.
