Technology & Combat Characteristics
The FXA-05D G-Defenser is a fighter craft created to support the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II in battle.
On its own the FXA-05D G-Defenser's combat abilities are similar to FF-X7-Bst Core Booster from the One Year War in that it is a space fighter with multiple missiles, vulcans, and beam weapons. Though composed of Gundarium alloy it relies more on its small size and speed to avoid attacks.
When fighting with the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II, the G-Defenser docks with the Gundam Mk-II. When docked the cockpit capsule of the G-Defenser disconnects from the main body and operates independently, similar to the FF-X7 Core Fighter. When docked the primary weapons of the G-Defesner- the 14-tube missile pods, the long beam rifle, and the vulcan guns- stay with the Gundam, leaving the cockpit capsule only the laser guns.
Armaments
- 14-tube Missile Pod
- The FXA-05D G-Defenser mounts a pair of 14-tube missile pods that are mounted in the binders on the main body.
- Long Beam Rifle
- The most powerful weapon of the FXA-05D G-Defenser is the long beam rifle, a high powered energy weapon mounted on the starboard side of the main body. Although the G-Defenser and its weapons are powered by a Minovsky type ultracompact fusion reactor, its small size limits its power output, limiting the G-Defenser's ability to use the long beam rifle when not docked with the Gundam Mk-II
- Mini Laser Gun
- The FXA-05D G-Defenser mounts a pair of mini laser guns on the nose of the cockpit capsule. These mini laser guns are the cockpit capsule's primary and only weapon when disengaged from the main body. Because of the development of semi-transparent coating before the One Year War laser weaponry are limited in effectiveness, especially against battleships. The mini laser guns are fire-linked and have a power rating of 1.7 MW each.
- Vulcan Gun
- A common defensive weapon used in close to mid range combat. While it can normally do little damage against the armor of a mobile suit it serves as a much more efficient and cost-effective as a means to shoot down incoming missiles, as opposed to using the beam rifle, the power of which would be over kill and if far more limited in ammunition. The vulcan guns are an offensive weapon designed to be used against small lightly-armored targets such as ground combat vehicles or attack helicopters. The FXA-05D G-Defenser mounts four vulcan guns, a pair on each missile pod binder.
History
With the appearance of the Titans' transformable mobile suits, the stalwart Gundam Mk.II is in danger of being hopelessly outclassed. In response, Anaheim Electronics develops a dedicated support fighter which can dock with the Mk.II to form the G-Flyer transport vehicle, and its cockpit capsule then detaches, leaving the armament unit wrapped around the Mk.II. Technically, this combination of Gundam and armament unit is known as the "Mk.II Defenser," but with its powerful engines, movable shields, and devastating long rifle, this powered-up form more than earns its nickname of "Super Gundam."
