The Gelgoog Marine Commander Type is a commander variant of the MS-14F Gelgoog Marine introduced in Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

Compared to the mass production variant, the Gelgoog Marine Commander Type boasted improved mobility and maneuverability,[1] featuring more vernier thrusters and two additional propellant tank slots for a total of four.[2] In addition to the head antenna signifying its role as a commander unit, it was also equipped with a pair of head-mounted 40mm Vulcan Guns.[3] Furthermore, the mobile suit has undergone weight reduction and was lighter than the standard Gelgoog Marine.[3]

The Gelgoog Marine Commander Type's main weapon was the MRB-110 Beam Rifle, which was capable of rapid firing due to a forced cooling mechanism. It was also equipped with a custom arm-mounted shield, which concealed a chaff/flare dispenser, and its other weapons were identical to the standard Gelgoog Marine.[3] Late in the One Year War, the unit used by Cima Garahau was given a unique camouflage pattern composed of many fine dots, which made gauging its shape on a monitor difficult. The paint itself also confused many different types of sensors.[4]

Armaments[]

  • 40mm Vulcan Gun
A pair of shell-firing armament built into the head. These rapid-fire but low offensive power weapons are used for destroying lightly-armored units, restricting enemy movements, intercepting missiles, intimidation, etc.
  • 110mm Machine Cannon
A standard equipment of the F Type, the MS-14Fs was equipped with a large caliber machine cannon in each forearm. These projectile firing weapons were highly effective at close range.[3]
  • Beam Saber
A pair of beam sabers were stored in the sides of the waist.[5] Unlike the "naginata" type beam sword used by the A Type and the S Type, they only had one beam emitter, though their internal mechanisms were of the same series, which were noted for high reliability.[3]
  • MRB-110 Beam Rifle
Developed concurrently with the MS-14JG Gelgoog Jäger, the MRB-110's barrel resembled the one used by the MS-14JG's beam machine gun. It featured a drum magazine-type energy pack, a technology that was not yet practical during the war, implying it was a post-war modification. It was capable of rapid firing due to a forced cooling mechanism, and was also known as a beam machine gun.[3][6] This weapon also had an alternate model number of "MNG-110".
  • Shield
A large forearm-mounted shield with a viewing window. It has a built-in chaff/flare dispenser for distraction.[3]
  • MMP-R00-D Electromagnetic Induction Projection Rifle
Developed by MS firearm manufacturer MMP near the end of the One Year War at Zeon's Granada base, this experimental rail rifle utilizes electromagnetic force to launch high velocity luna titanium bullets to inflict heavy damage. This handheld weapon only appears in the manga "Mobile Suit Gundam 0083 Rebellion".
  • MMP-80 90mm Machine Gun
A small caliber machine gun for mobile suits developed under the United Maintenance Plan. The overall shape and mechanism of the Zaku Machine Gun, which was previously deployed, has been changed. The magazine has been changed from a drum magazine to a box magazine, and a 197mm grenade launcher is available as an option. As a result of the caliber being reduced to 90mm, the gun's hit rate was improved, and the 90mm shell also had excellent initial velocity and anti-MS firepower. A standard magazine is loaded with 32 rounds, while a triple magazine contained 100 rounds. The late production model features a different barrel and hand guard, resulting in a more compact shape.

Special Equipment & Features[]

  • External Propellant Tank
An external tank used for propellant storage. This extra propellant greatly extends a mobile suit's operating range and enables it to stay in combat longer. When the propellant is consumed, the tank can be discarded to reduce the mobile suit's weight. These tanks use a two-layered construction, with one layer containing propellant, and the other holding extra coolant.

History[]

On December 31, following the Battle of A Baoa Qu, Cima Garahau led MAU Cima on a fighting retreat through the E Field in her camouflage-patterned Gelgoog Marine Commander Type. She was joined by Geil Hunt and his MAU Geil. The Gelgoog Marine Commander Type was heavily damaged during the retreat, losing its left arm and right leg, though Cima was able to survive and lead her forces to Karama Point.[7]

However, at Karama Point, the commander of MAU Cima, Asakura, demanded Cima to hand over the Lili Marlene to the Earth Federation Forces as compensation. Angered, Cima deployed in a Gelgoog Marine Commander Type and attempted to kill him, but was stopped by Anavel Gato in the YMS-09R-2 Prototype Rick-Dom Zwei. It is unknown whether this unit was a different one or the original Gelgoog Marine Commander Type repaired, though Cima would continue to pilot this unit in U.C. 0083.[7]

During Operation Stardust in U.C. 0083, Cima used her Gelgoog Marine Commander Type before switching to the AGX-04 Gerbera Tetra. In the manga "Mobile Suit Gundam 0083 Rebellion," it is given to Clara Lodge when Cima switches to the Gerbera Tetra.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • The Gelgoog Marine Commander Type unit depicted in Gundam 0083 is Cima Garahau's personal colors. The standard colors unit as depicted in the games Mobile Suit Gundam: Encounters in Space and Mobile Suit Gundam: Gihren's Greed have the same colors as the Gelgoog Marine.
  • In The Mayfly of Space, Cima referred to her Gelgoog Marine Commander Type as "Marine Leiter" (マリーネ・ライター), German for "Marine Leader".
  • Despite being solid shells, the machine cannon rounds of Cima's unit were animated like beam shots in the scene where they impacted the GP01.
  • The camouflage pattern seen in The Mayfly of Space 2 resembles erbsenmuster, which was issued to the Waffen-SS during World War II.
  • While the HGUC model kit manual listed the model number of Gelgoog Marine Commander Type's beam rifle as "MRB-110", the model number of this rifle in the concept art was "MNG-110". This latter model number was still used in some sourcebooks.
