Disambiguation:

The RAG-79-G1 Gundam Marine Type (水中型ガンダム?) (aka Marine Type Gundam, Waterproof Gundam or Gundiver) is an Earth Federation Forces Mobile suit from the Universal Century, which first appeared in the Kunio Okawara Collection (SD Club No.13) design series and later on in the side story manga Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn: The Noble Shroud.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

A variant of the RAG-79 Aqua GM specially tuned for ace pilots, the RAG-79-G1 retained the same basic design, and only received the name "Gundam Marine Type" due to its head resembling a Gundam's head. The Gundam Marine Type featured improved thrust and generator output, as well as a modified weapons loadout, including a harpoon gun mounted on its left forearm and an underwater-use beam rifle. Additionally, it is fitted with a wired periscope on the back of its head. It is often operated as a commander unit leading a platoon of Aqua GMs.

Armaments[]

  • Torpedo Pod
Integrated in the backpack are two torpedo pods for underwater warfare.
  • Explosive Harpoon Gun
Mounted on the left forearm, it fires harpoons with shaped charge built into their tips to destroy the enemy MS from the inside.
  • Hand Anchor
Mounted on the right forearm, it is a wired grappling claw that can be launched to grab enemy units for various purposes such as pulling them closer or to restrict their movements. It can also be used to anchor and stabilize the Gundam Marine Type in areas with dangerous water currents.
  • Beam Pick
The same weapon as the ones used by the Aqua GM, the beam pick emits a short beam blade upon contact with enemy armor in order to minimize heat loss in the water. It can also be used as a beam saber by adjusting the output. Due to low popularity among pilots, the number of beam picks was reduced to only two.[1]
  • Underwater-use Beam Rifle
A beam rifle designed to be used underwater, it fires a thin, highly converged beam to minimize beam deterioration in the water. When not in use, it is fitted with a curved cover to reduce water resistance.[1]

Special Attacks[]

  • Secret Technique! Naruto Strait Hell Vortex
A technique whereby the Gundam Marine Type swims rapidly around an enemy target on the surface of the sea, trapping the target in a vortex and then attacking it with the harpoon gun. Used in the manga Mobile Suit Gundam - Acguy: 2250 Miles Across North America.

Special Equipment & Features[]

  • Wired Periscope
The camera on the back of the head can detach to become a wire-guided periscope, allowing the the RAG-78-G1 to view the surface while staying underwater.

History[]

One surviving Gundam Marine Type was deployed at Dakar during the events of Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, alongside two RAG-79 Aqua GM units to fight against The Sleeves. The Gundam Marine Type however was no match against the more advanced AMS-129M Zee Zulu units deployed by The Sleeves and was destroyed in combat.
