The GF13-017NJII God Gundam (aka G Gundam, Burning Gundam in the English dub) is the titular Mobile Fighter of Mobile Fighter G Gundam. It was the second Mobile Fighter used by Neo Japan in the 13th Gundam Fight, and is piloted by Domon Kasshu.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

The successor of the GF13-017NJ Shining Gundam, the God Gundam was developed by Dr. Mikamura almost single-handedly and customized for Domon Kasshu.[1] Even in Normal Mode, its power surpassed that of the Shining Gundam's Super Mode. In addition, it could achieve an even more powerful state called Hyper Mode.[2]

Its chest was equipped with the Energy Multiplier System, a unique system that allowed energy to be refined in a similar manner to Qi. When piloted by Domon, the King of Heart emblem would appear upon it.[1][3] It was part of a larger system called the Artificial Aura Generator.[1] The six Core Lander wings on its back (which were named "Dream", "Illusion", "Bubble", "Shadow", "Dew", and "Lightning", after a passage from the Diamond Sutra)[1] and the two short antennas on its head served as magnetic field generating devices,[3] while the two long antennas functioned as intelligence-gathering devices.[4] When Hyper Mode is activated, the Energy Multiplier opens up, the six wings deploy, and a ring of light appears on the God Gundam's back, coating it in a magnetic field that improves its mobility through a full-body magnet coating.[3][2]

The God Gundam was armed with a pair of head-mounted vulcan guns, a pair of 3-barrel machine cannons mounted on the upper chest, and a pair of beam swords known as "God Slash".[3] In Hyper Mode, it was capable of using a finisher move known as Bakunetsu God Finger, a refined and more powerful version of Shining Finger. Its forearms were covered in armor known as "G Knuckles" or "God Finger Protectors", which were based on the finishing move of Neo Albania's Gundam Fighter during the 12th Gundam Fight.[1][2]

Armaments[]

  • Vulcan Gun
Two pairs of head-mounted shell firing weapons with a high rate of fire. Used mainly for hindering opponents.
  • Machine Cannon
A pair of 3-barrel machine cannons are housed on the clavicle section of God Gundam, they are more powerful than the head-mounted vulcan guns.
  • Beam Sword
A pair of beam swords mounted on the side armor, their output was higher than the ones used by the Shining Gundam and could cut through Gundarium alloy armor. They were also known as "God Slash".[5] Though they could technically be used in conjunction with the Bakunetsu God Finger, doing so required several times the heat and energy resistance needed by the Shining Finger Sword, so such a technique was never actually used.[1] The name used for the weapon differs throughout various media.
  • God Finger Protector
Claws mounted in pairs on each forearm. They open up when the Bakunetsu God Finger attack is performed. Used only once during Domon's rematch against Michelo Chariot to gouge out the eyes of Nero Gundam.

Special Attacks[]

  • Bakunetsu God Finger (爆熱ゴッドフィンガー Erupting God Finger?)
Similar to Shining Gundam, God Gundam is able to focus all its energy into its hand to perform its signature finisher, the Erupting God Finger; allowing it to rip through solid matter with ease or project its power as a flaming energy wave. As God Gundam's energy output is far greater than Shining Gundam's, it's forearm armor slides over its hand to form an armored gauntlet when God Finger is activated to better control its energy. Like with the Shining Finger, the finger joints come off and the manipulator is covered with liquid metal from the joints. Unlike its predecessor's move, which was used to destroy a rival's head, the Erupting God Finger is usually performed by plunging it directly into the abdominal area of the enemy mobile fighter followed by the Heat End technique. Alternatively, the technique can also be used to shoot energy as a projectile.
  • Heat End (ヒート・エンド?)
A second-stage finisher performed after Erupting God Finger. With its hand plunged into an opponent's body, God Gundam discharges all of its energy at once as Domon closes his hand, destroying the mobile suit from the inside out.
  • Bakunetsu Double God Finger (爆熱ダブルゴッドフィンガー Erupting Double God Finger?)
A combination attack between God Gundam and GF13-050NSW Nobel Gundam used during their tag-team match against GF13-047NMA Skull Gundam and GF13-041NSI Ashura Gundam. God Gundam and Nobel Gundam unleash their God Finger attacks on the respective opponents in tandem. When adopted in Super Robot Wars, it is usually referred to only as Double God Finger.
  • Bakunetsu Love-Love God Finger (爆熱ラブラブゴッドフィンガー Erupting Love-Love God Finger?)
Super Robot Wars-exclusive. A combination attack between God Gundam and Rain Mikamura's JMF1336R Rising Gundam (SRW J) or Shining Gundam (SRW R), with both Gundams unleashing their God Finger (Shining Finger) attacks on the enemy.
  • Double Shining Finger (ダブルシャイニングフィンガー?)
Seen in Super Robot Wars Impact. A combination attack between God Gundam and Rain Mikamura's Shining Gundam, with both Gundams unleashing their God Finger and Shining Finger attacks on the enemy.
  • Double Darkness Finger/Bakunetsu! Kyuukyokuken/Darkness God Finger (ダブルダークネスフィンガー/爆熱!究極拳/ダークネスゴッドフィンガー?)
Super Robot Wars-exclusive. A combination attack between God Gundam and GF13-001NHII Master Gundam, with both Gundams unleashing their God Finger and Darkness Finger attacks on the enemy. The above names are respectively used for SRW Impact & Advance Portable/Advance/R.
  • Super Bakunetsu Inazuma God Finger (スーパー爆熱イナズマゴッドフィンガー Super Erupting Lightning God Finger?)
A combination attack between God Gundam and the Super Robot Gunbuster, seen in the Super Robot Wars F Final Anthology Comic. Gunbuster unleashes its Super Inazuma Kick attack, as God Gundam stands on Gunbuster's sole and releases the Bakunetsu God Finger at the same time. The attack was successfully used to destroy the Buff Clan's decisive superweapon, the Gando Rowa II.
  • Bakunetsu God Slash (爆熱ゴッドスラッシュ Erupting God Slash?)
A technique Domon developed to defeat Kyral Mekiral of Neo Nepal. Focusing all its power into a single beam sword strike, the God Gundam charges forward and slices the opponent in half. It consumes less energy than God Finger, which is an energy-releasing technique.
  • Sekiha Tenkyouken (石破天驚拳 Rock-breaking Sky-shocking Fist?)
The ultimate technique of the School of the Undefeated of the East, which Domon learned from Master Asia prior to his match with Schwarz Bruder. All of the God Gundam's power are focused into both hands and released as a massive ball of energy that obliterates everything in its path.
  • God Finger - Sekiha Tenkyouken (ゴッドフィンガー・石破天驚拳 God Finger - Rock-Breaking Sky-Shocking Fist?)
A technique which consists of initiating the God Finger first before unleashing the Sekiha Tenkyouken, boosting it's power. Used by Domon in his battle with GF13-021NG Gundam Spiegel during the last round of the Semifinals. Not to be confused with God Gundam's ultimate solo attack, Sekiha Tenkyou God Finger.
  • Bakunetsu Sekiha Tenkyouken (爆熱石破天驚拳 Erupting Rock-Breaking Sky-Shocking Fist?)
A seemingly more powerful version of the Sekiha Tenkyouken used by Domon to destroy the Devil Gundam's cockpit, along with both versions of Kyoji Kasshu.
  • Sekiha Tenkyou God Finger (石破天驚ゴッドフィンガー Rock-breaking Sky-shocking God Finger?)
A variation of the Sekiha Tenkyouken, combining it with Domon's personal technique, Bakunetsu God Finger. The God Finger is used during the Sekiha Tenkyouken and produces a giant energy hand that is used to crush its opponent. As with the Bakunetsu God Finger, it is followed by a variation of the Heat End technique. It is often known as God Gundam's most powerful solo attack. Used only once against Master Asia during their final battle where Domon used it to overpower Master Asia's own Sekiha Tenkyouken and defeat him.
  • Sekiha Love-Love Tenkyouken (石破ラブラブ天驚拳 Rock-breaking LOVE-LOVE Sky-shocking Fist?)
A variation on the Sekiha Tenkyoken performed only once by Domon and Rain to destroy the Devil Gundam once and for all. In Super Robot Wars games, it first appeared as an event in SRW F Final, before being added as a proper attack in later games, performed together with Rain's JMF1336R Rising Gundam (64, Advance, Advance Portable, MX, J), or alternatively, the Shining Gundam (Impact, R). The words "Bakunetsu" or "Bakunetsu God Finger" are usually also added in front of the attack's name in SRW.
  • Kyuukyoku Sekiha Tenkyouken (究極石破天驚拳 Ultimate Rock-Breaking Sky-Shocking Fist?)
A variation on the Sekiha Tenkyouken exclusive to video games, it is performed by the God Gundam and the GF13-001NHII Master Gundam. Both mobile fighters execute the Tenkyouken on opposite sides of the opponent to crush it between two giant energy fists.
  • Sekiha Love Love Londo Bell Zenin Tenkyouken (石破究極天驚拳 Rock-Breaking Love Love Londo Bell Everyone Sky-Shocking Fist?)
A variation on the Sekiha Tenkyouken seen in the Shin Super Robot Wars Comic. God Gundam, piloted by Domon and Rain, concentrates power from all of the Londo Bell team's robots and members, before unleashing a Love-Love Tenkyouken attack at the Devil Gundam OG, dealing significant damage to it.
  • Bunshin Sappou God Shadow (分身殺法ゴッドシャドー Clone Killing Technique God Shadow?)
Using energy from the Hyper Mode, the God Gundam creates multiple copies of itself. Used once against Chibodee to counter his Burning Machine Gun Punch.
  • God Slash Typhoon (ゴッドスラッシュ・タイフーン God Slash Typhoon?)
A variation of its usual God Slash attack where God Gundam spins like a top, followed by a variation of the Heat End technique. Used once against George de Sand to counter his Rose Hurricane attack.
  • God Field Dash (ゴッドフィールド・ダッシュ God Field Dash?)
While in Hyper Mode, the wing-like emitters increase in power, increasing propulsion. Used once against Argo to counter his Sakuretsu Gaia Crusher after noticing the stress it was putting on Bolt Gundam's legs.
  • Choukyuu Haou Den'eidan (超級覇王電影弾 Super Class Supreme King Electric Shadow Bullet?)
God Gundam charges its entire body with energy and launches itself at the enemy in the form of a massive ball of energy.
  • Sakuretsu Gaia Crusher (炸裂ガイアクラッシャー Bursting Gaia Crusher?)
A technique borrowed from Argo Gulskii, it was used during the Battle Royale together with the Bolt Gundam and Dragon Gundam. By tapping into the power of the Shuffle Alliance crest, the God Gundam strikes the ground with its fist, triggering a seismic upheavel that raises the rocks around the God Gundam. It was used to create a tunnel for Domon to escape to confront the Devil Gundam.
  • Bakunetsu Shuffle Doumei Ken (爆熱シャッフル同盟拳 Erupting Shuffle Alliance Fist?)
A powerful technique used in tandem with the other members of the Shuffle Alliance, while in Hyper Mode. Energy is concentrated into the users' right hands and then released together. This technique is used only once to destroy Ulube and his Grand Master Gundam.
  • God Strike (ゴッドストライク?)
Game-exclusive. The God Gundam barrages the enemy with punches. First seen in the G Gundam SFC game before appearing in Shin Super Robot Wars, SRW F Final and SRW T.
  • Burning God Buster (バーニングゴッドバスター?)
A technique seen utilized in the Comic BomBom manga. The God Gundam unleases a burst of flame from its arm.
  • Fuun Reppa (風雲烈火 Inferno of Winds and Clouds?)
Seen in SD Gundam G Generation F. The God Gundam, riding on Fuunsaiki, circles the enemy at a tremendous speed, generating a large tornado, before striking them down.
  • Unicorn Head (ユニコーンヘッド?)
Seen in SD Gundam G Generation. While riding on Fuunsaiki, the God Gundam rams the enemy with Fuunsaiki's horn.

History[]

The GF13-017NJII God Gundam was developed in tandem with the GF13-017NJ Shining Gundam for use of Neo Japan's Gundam Fighter, Domon Kasshu. The initial plan was that Domon would fight the Gundam Fight preliminaries using the Shining Gundam, then switch to the God Gundam for the Gundam Fight Finals. However, there was an unforeseen problem with this plan - the arrival of Master Asia and the JDG-00X Devil Gundam in the Guyana Highlands. The ensuing fight left the Shining Gundam crippled, forcing Neo Japan to launch the God Gundam earlier than planned. Thanks to an experimental brainwave communicator, Rain was able to transfer the battle data from the Shining Gundam to the God Gundam, making it combat ready.

The Gundam Fight Finals would see Domon practically rebuild his skills from the ground up as he fought his opponents. Many of his attacks, such as the Bunshin Sappou God Shadow and the God Slash Typhoon were created to counter attacks devised by his teammates within the Shuffle Alliance. The God Gundam would serve its purpose well, leading Domon to the Battle Royale match and his fight with Master Asia, claiming him the title of "Gundam of Gundams". In the end, Domon would take the God Gundam into space, leading the final fight against the Devil Gundam and rescuing Rain.

A variant of the God Gundam known as the Hyper God Gundam also appears in the manga Mobile Fighter G Gundam Side Story: The Next Generation. This time, it participates in the 14th Gundam Fight piloted by Domon's student, Yuugo Kagami.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • In the English dub its name was changed to "Burning Gundam" due to Sunrise's fears of North American viewers being offended by the God Gundam name, following an incident where employees of the retail store chain Walmart went through every box of a shipment of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing toys and removed and returned all instances of the XXXG-01D2 Gundam Deathscythe Hell. The name has remained for every English-released game involving the unit except for SD Gundam Capsule Fighter Online, where the unit remains as God Gundam. Gunpla releases of this mobile suit were released simply as "G Gundam" (with the G being in the same style as in the title card of the show), with the exceptions of the HiRM and RG kits, which use the name "God Gundam".
    • The dub name "Burning" follows the trend of other Neo Japan mobile fighters' names (Shining, Rising, Shading).
    • Other than its name being changed in the English dub, all of the God Gundam's attacks that have the word God in their name were also replaced with Burning.
  • Domon says the following phrase whenever the Erupting God Finger is used, which replaces his Shining Finger chant:
This hand of mine is burning red! Its loud roar tells me to grasp victory! Erupting God Finger!
  • A mistake occurs in the English dub when Domon was attacked by street thugs in the finals. When he goes to summon the Burning Gundam he promptly shouts "Rise Shining Gundam!", while in the original Japanese track he merely says "Rise Gundam!" This was possibly due to the English dub reusing sound clips from previous episodes due to their frequent use in the series.
  • In Gundam Evolve episode 3, Rain Mikamura in Rising Gundam and Domon Kasshu in God Gundam both perform the Rising Finger and Erupting God Finger respectively. However, both of the techniques appear to be the Sekiha Tenkyoken, not the Erupting God Finger or Rising Finger.

Game-specific[]

  • In SD Gundam G Generation WARS, the God Gundam has a very unique trait: Several characters have a unique line of dialogue when using the Erupting God Finger. Some examples are Setsuna F. Seiei's "In this world, there is no God. Only my Gundam!" (ironic, considering the MS name), Graham Aker's "Graham Finger" and Patrick Colasour's "Special Finger".
    • This trait also carry over to the future sequels World, Overworld and Cross Rays.
    • Like God Finger, Trans Am from Gundam 00 also carries this trait with almost every character saying the word. This also includes Sekiha Love-Love Tenkyouken for characters who are in official relationships.
  • In Gundam Battle Assault 3: Featuring Gundam SEED, Domon with his God Gundam immediately challenges Kira Yamato and his Freedom Gundam when they meet in Orb. Domon considers this fight as a Gundam Fight as he shouts, "Gundam Fight! Ready? Go!" before the fight begins.
  • In Super Robot Wars J, God Gundam and the Nadasico are the only units that have finisher animations whenever God Gundam defeats its enemy with certain attacks. God Gundam's attacks that have such animations are the Erupting God Finger, Double Erupting God Finger (a combination attack with the Nobel Gundam or Rising Gundam), Erupting God Finger Sekiha Tenkyoken, and Sekiha Love Love Tenkyoken (a combination attack with the Rising Gundam).
  • In tandem with the other Shuffle Alliance Gundams, the God Gundam can perform the Shuffle Alliance Attack combination attack in Super Robot Wars J. The Shuffle Alliance Attack has an attack power of 10540 when fully upgraded.
  • Along with the the Master Gundam and the Musha Gundam, when fully upgraded God Gundam has the best Fight statistic points in Gundam Musou 3. It also has the best fully upgraded Mobility stat points together with a few other mobile suits in the game. The sum of all fully upgraded God Gundam's stat points is 3917, the highest number of total stat points in the game followed by The O (3893) and the Master Gundam (3889).
  • Two versions of the Burning Gundam is available in Gundam Breaker Mobile:
    • The Power (P) version is available (along with the Technique (T) version of the Denial Gundam) on a one-week Sokai Festival-themed banner starting from June 28, 2020.
    • The Speed (S) version is available as part of the "Build Project" event, where the players must build it from event blueprints during a limited time when it is available. This is very resource-intensive process, as each part requires a combination of twelve total Material which can only be obtained by rolling the current gacha capsules on specific weeks to get the number of necessary material for the part. it would take at least sixty-five rolls over four weeks to craft the parts.
      • On April 5, 2023, this version of the Burning Gundam is one of the many Build Project suits to be re-released for the "GBM Appreciation Festival" event prior to the game's termination from service on June 5.
