The GNZ-001 GRM Gundam (aka GRM Gundam, pronounced "Garm Gundam") is a mobile suit introduced in Mobile Suit Gundam 00V. Known pilots are Regene Regetta and Leo Sieg.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

The GRM Gundam was the prototype and the first mobile suit of the "GNZ Series" (also known as the "Ga Series") dedicated to the Innovades who call themselves Innovators.[1][2][3][4] It was developed using design data of the Gundams within the quantum processing system, Veda, which was in the possession of the Innovator, Ribbons Almark, at that time.[1][2][3][4] In particular, the GRM Gundam employed many technologies originating from one of the second generation Gundams, the GNY-004 Gundam Plutone, most prominently the Core Fighter system that enables the pilot to escape during an emergency.[1][2][3][4] On the GRM Gundam, this system centered around a detachable backpack, and an improved version would be adopted by most of the subsequent GNZ series machines.[3][5] Interestingly, the development of the GRM Gundam did not utilize the Gundam Plutone's data directly, instead the data utilized was from the GNY-004B Gundam Plutone Black, a replica of the Plutone made by the Innovators.[3][6][7]

The name "GRM" means "Generation of reborn MS", and while spelled differently, it was also named after "Garm", a hound in Norse mythology that watches over the dead in the underworld who are trying to return to the world of the living.[2][3][5] From this, it can be seen the Innovators were highly conscious of the upcoming battles against Celestial Being and its Gundams.[2][3][5]Celestial Being's Gundams were also set as the potential enemy when arming the GRM, as such its main weapon is the large and powerful GN Mega Launcher.[3] Other weapons included a forearm-mounted GN Shield that can generate a GN Field, two GN Vulcans built into the forearms and two GN Beam Sabers stored in the left and right side skirt armor.[2][3][4][5] The GN Vulcans and GN Beam Sabers would be adopted as the standard armament of some of the subsequent GNZ series machines, which were named after the goddesses of Norse mythology.[2][3][5] Additionally, improved version of the GN Mega Launcher and GN Shield would be used by the GNZ-003 Gadessa and the GNZ-005 Garazzo respectively.[3][4][5]

Other features of the GRM Gundam seen in the subsequent GNZ series machines included the line sensor on the forehead and the GN Condensers built into the shoulders.[3][8][9][10] The shapes of the GRM Gundam's limbs are also similar to the later GNZ series machines', with a major exception being the feet.[3][5] While the GRM Gundam's feet are of a standard design meant for ground contact, most of the later machines have foldable feet not meant for contacting the ground during normal operations.[3][5][8] The foldable feet design is because clashes between GN Drive-type mobile suits are primarily aerial battles, and it seems the GRM Gundam's feet lack this feature because the mobile suit is the first unit in the GNZ series.[3][5] The later GNZ series machines also got rid of or hid the Gundam-like features that can be seen on the GRM Gundam, and this was done in consideration that the Innovators would be fighting against Celestial Being as members of the A-Laws.[1][2][3][5] Like the later GNZ series machine, the GRM Gundam was eventually upgraded with the ability to use Trans-Am System.[11]

Armaments[]

  • GN Mega Launcher
A large, handheld, beam cannon that served as the GRM Gundam's main weapon, it is the prototype of the GNZ-003 Gadessa's GN Mega Launcher, and thus also known as Prototype GN Mega Launcher.[3][4][5] When used, the two barrels of the GN Mega Launcher slide apart to reveal a round muzzle for firing powerful beams made of highly compressed GN Particles.[3][5][12] However, these beams are weaker than the ones from the Gadessa's GN Mega Launcher, and the GRM Gundam's GN Mega Launcher also has fewer and shorter barrels than the Gadessa's.[3][4][5] On the other hand, its smaller size made it easier to handle.[3][4][5] Based on the data obtained by the GRM Gundam, the Gadessa is equipped with an energy pack system to deal with the weapon's high particle consumption.[3][5]
  • GN Shield
A physical shield mounted on the GRM Gundam's left forearm, it can generate a GN Field and has high defensive capabilities against various types of attacks including beam and physical projectiles.[3][4][5] The equipment on the GNZ-005 Garazzo's left shoulder was developed based on this GN Shield.[3][4][5]
  • GN Beam Saber
Stored in the left and right side skirt armor, the pair of GN Beam Sabers are the GRM Gundam's primary close combat weapon.[2][3][5] When in use, the saber's grip slides out from the back of the side skirt armor for grabbing by the Gundam's hand.[3] Subsequently, the Gadessa is also equipped with GN Beam Sabers stored in its side skirt armor as part of its standard armament.[3][8][9]
  • GN Vulcan
Built into the tip of each forearm, the pair of GN Vulcans are low-powered beam guns with rapid fire capabilities.[2][3][5][12] As a result, they are mainly used in creating a barrage, for intercepting enemy units or attacks, as well as to restrict enemy movements.[3][5] The GN Vulcans on the forearms are inherited by the Gadessa, Garazzo and GNZ-007 Gaddess.[3][8][13][14]

Special Equipment & Features[]

  • Core Fighter System
This system originated from the second generation Gundam, the GNY-004 Gundam Plutone, where it enables the pilot and the valuable GN Drive to be ejected from the mobile suit during an emergency.[3][5][15][16] While the Plutone's Core Fighter system took the form of a transformable flight unit that can detach from the torso through the mobile suit's back, the GRM Gundam's Core Fighter system centers around a detachable backpack with foldable wings that is flexibly mounted on the back.[3][5][15][16] It is however unclear if the GRM Gundam's cockpit is in this detachable backpack, or like most of the subsequent GNZ series machines, where the chest-mounted cockpit module is connected to the detachable backpack and leaves together when the backpack separates from the mobile suit. The Innovators installed the Core Fighter system on the GRM Gundam with the specific goal of improving the survivability of its pilot.[3][5] The original importance of the Core Fighter system in ensuring the recovery of the GN Drive is lost on the GRM Gundam as it is powered by a mass produced GN Drive Tau.[3][5]
The use of GN Particles for the formation of a spherical GN Field barrier to encase and protect a mobile suit from various attacks was first tested on the Gundam Plutone, and then implemented on the GN-005 Gundam Virtue.[17][18][19] While both Plutone and Virtue generate this barrier using several devices on their body, the GRM Gundam was able to generate it simply from the forearm-mounted GN Shield.[3][5][17][19]
A system that when activated releases at once all of the compressed high-density GN Particles accumulated in a machine, enhancing its thrust and defensive capabilities as well as allowing it to perform at three times its normal output for a limited time.[20][21][22] Additionally, the entire machine will glow red and afterimages are also generated during movements.[11][20][21][22] The Trans-Am System was originally unusable by mobile suits powered by GN Drive Tau, but this issue was eventually resolved, and the GNZ series machines were upgraded with the ability to use this system.[11][23][24] However, the GN Drive Tau becomes inoperable after using Trans-Am and must be replaced, and until then, the mobile suit operates using the particles remaining in its GN condensers.[25][26] By 2314, the GRM Gundam was in the possession of the Fereshte, and used by Leo Sieg to battle Fon Spaak upon Veda's order.[11][12] Leo activated the GRM Gundam's Trans-Am System during the battle, but the fight was interrupted by the alien lifeform known as ELS and Leo was forced to retreat.[11]
The GRM Gundam's operating system is presumably linked to Veda, allowing the quantum processing system to support the mobile suit and its pilot.

History[]

Mobile Suit Gundam 00V Vol.018 GNZ-001 GRM Gundam[]

Sometime after the Innovades who call themselves Innovators were defeated by Celestial Being, Billy Katagiri met Robert Spacey for the first time. Robert immediately noticed Billy was carrying information on the new next generation mobile suit he was developing for the Earth Sphere Federation Forces (ESF Forces), and remarked that that was one of the things he wanted to discuss with Billy. Robert's words made Billy uneasy. Billy had assisted the Innovators in the past, and while working with them, he witnessed new technologies which proved beneficial to the development of the new ESF Forces mobile suit. Additionally, Billy did not want others to know that he had briefly cooperated with Celestial Being.

Robert noticed Billy's wariness and clarified that he was only interested in mobile suits, not Billy's past. He told Billy that he also assisted Celestial Being before, and thus in that regard, they both have similar checkered past. Billy's uneasiness was then quickly put to rest by Robert's innocent smile, and he later showed Robert a picture of a machine that the Innovators had developing using the data stored in Veda. Billy found that not only was Robert knowledgeable about mobile suits, he was also a good listener and asked pointed questions. Furthermore, he expressed child-like joy upon learning rare information. Billy then revealed that when he first boarded the Innovators' ship, Celestial Being, he saw a Gundam called GRM Gundam among the machines in the hangar. He explained that the GRM Gundam was the first of the Innovators' GNZ series of mobile suit, and that subsequent GNZ series machines lacked Gundam-like appearances so as to operate alongside the A-Laws.

All this made Robert wished he could take a look at the GRM Gundam with his own eyes. Robert then wondered if the GRM Gundam remained onboard Celestial Being. Billy replied that was likely the case as he could not see any reason for taking it out. He also added that the ship continued to be under surveillance by the Earth Sphere Federation, and as exploration of the ship's interior was ongoing, they should be able to find the GRM Gundam sooner or later. Robert remarked that he would be looking forward to it, and proceeded to probe further on what Billy had seen in the ship. Billy and Robert were so engrossed in their discussion on mobile suits that they paid no heed to the passage of time.

Mobile Suit Gundam 00I Chapter 12 & 13[]

Prior to the Innovators' defeat, one of its members, Regene Regetta was identified by Leif Recitativo as one of the six Innovades that Veda wanted him to gather. Using the GRM Gundam, Regene arrived at an Orbital Elevator to meet the other five Innovades, including Leif. Regene was then awakened by one the five, Telicyra Herfi, and gifted with the power to control both the original GN Drives and the GN Drive Taus by Veda. To show off his new power, Regene started the GRM Gundam's GN Drive Tau from the outside by simply pointing at it. However to Regene's dismay, he soon learnt that Veda wanted the six Innovades to serve as the new Observers.

Finding this to be a poor use of his newfound power, Regene decided to eliminate the other five Innovades so as to gather new Innovades and form a group of Observers more receptive to his agenda. Leaving the other Innovades and the GRM Gundam behind, Regene contacted his accomplice, Beside Pain, to attack the Orbital Elevator with the CB-001.5 1.5 Gundam so as to kill the five Innovades. Unfortunately for Regene, one of the five, Hermiya, had the power to remove an Innovade from the group, wiping out all related memories and the special power granted by Veda in the process. With the other four Innovades agreeing to oust Regene, Hermiya activated her power, and Regene immediately forgot why he was at the Orbital Elevator.

Mobile Suit Gundam 00I 2314[]

With the ESF government adopting new peaceful and cooperative policies following the Innovators' defeat, Celestial Being stopped conducting large-scale armed interventions and instead took a more secretive approach to their actions. Additionally, the Ptolemaios team's Gundams were all badly damaged during the battle with the Innovators and new Gundams were still in development, limiting their capabilities. To fill the gap, Celestial Being's shadow support group, Fereshte, was revived and tasked with some of the armed intervention missions. Fereshte was assigned three Gundams: GN-006/SA Cherudim Gundam SAGA, GN-007/AL Arios Gundam Ascalon, and GRM Gundam.

The GRM Gundam was hidden in the Orbital Elevator, while the Cherudim Gundam SAGA was used for space operations and the Arios Gundam Ascalon for Earth-based operations. This division of the Gundams for use in different regions was because the enhanced surveillance network of the Earth Sphere Federation had made moving the Gundams almost impossible, although movements of Fereshte's personnel remain unhindered. The same applies for the Ptolemaios team. When the alien lifeform, ELS, arrived in the earth sphere, attracted by the quantum brainwaves, Fereshte decided to deploy the GRM Gundam to help defend Earth. While the ESF Forces were busy preparing the absolute defense line for the confrontation with the ELS, Fereshte stole a GN Drive Tau from a military facility in an Orbital Elevator and installed it in the GRM Gundam. Fereshte's Gundam Meister Leo Sieg then boarded the mobile suit and took a defensive position behind the absolute defense line.

As some ELS broke through the absolute defense line, Leo engaged them using the GRM Gundam. To his horror, he soon discovered the group of ELS was headed for one of the quantum brainwaves isolation facilities on the Orbital Elevator that was sheltering potential Innovators. To lure them away, Leo activated his quantum brainwaves and the ELS quickly went after him. Leo fought valiantly, but he and the GRM Gundam were eventually overwhelmed by three ELS GN-XIVs. As the GRM Gundam was being assimilated by the ELS, Leo maneuvered his mobile suit away from the Orbital Elevator. Just as the GRM Gundam was about to be fully assimilated, Setsuna F. Seiei teleported to the ELS home world using the GNT-0000 00 Qan[T], stopping the assimilation process. As a result, Leo became partially infused with the ELS and the GRM Gundam was turned into the GNZ-001E GRM Gundam E.
