"This country is not your toy! Stop saying things influenced by sentimentalism!"

—Yuna Roma Seiran to Cagalli Yula Athha, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, Blood in the Water

Yuna Roma Seiran (ユウナ・ロマ・セイラン) is a character introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny. Yuna is the son of Unato Ema Seiran, the prime minister of Orb that succeeded former Chief Representative Uzumi Nara Athha. Yuna is also Cagalli Yula Athha's fiance by arranged marriage, a union that was approved of by both their parents, a revelation that is revealed by Myrna, Cagalli's caretaker. Yuna is mostly used as comic relief, presented as a villain who sees himself as more calculating and dashing than he actually is.

Personality & Character[]

Yuna is impulsive, abusive, and controlling. He told Cagalli that neither Athrun Zala nor Kira Yamato could be around them because those two are Coordinators and he and Cagalli are Naturals. It would be "unsafe" to have Coordinators around them (most likely due to political opportunism). A coward by nature, Yuna often tries to pass off any mistakes on his part to someone else or sacrifice others for his personal safety. This has caused him to be viewed with contempt by the Orb military.

History[]

Post "Break The World" Incident[]

After the fall of Junius Seven, Yuna aided in his father's decision to have the Orb Union ally with the Earth Alliance, as it was readily apparent that the Atlantic Federation was adopting a 'you're either with us or against us' stance. However, Cagalli was strongly against the Alliance with the Atlantic Federation because being on board the Minerva, she knew that they had managed to help in breaking apart Junius Seven to cause less damage to the Earth. However, Yuna was able to successfully manipulate Cagalli into agreeing with the Alliance. Because of Orb's treaty with the Earth Alliance, the Minerva was forced to depart from Orb. Yuna deployed Orb forces out to prevent them from re-entering their waters just as the Minerva left, while there was a massive Earth Alliance fleet waiting for the Minerva just outside. However, Shinn Asuka activated his SEED mode for the first time and destroyed the Earth Alliance forces with his ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam, forcing them to retreat. Yuna was shocked that the entire fleet was defeated by a single mobile suit.

Soon after, Yuna was about to marry Cagalli Yula Athha, but right before they could be officially married, Kira Yamato showed up in his ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam and disabled the Astray mobile suits. Yuna hid behind his Cagalli, before running off, allowing Kira to successfully retrieve his sister, who nonetheless protested. Yuna was outraged, and ordered the immediate destruction of the Archangel and Freedom Gundam. However, Captain Todaka, in command of the fleet ready to recover Cagalli decided to let the Archangel escape safely out of his deep respect for its warriors on board, who fought by his side in the previous war.[1]

Battle of Dardanelles[]

After Cagalli's kidnapping, Yuna assumed her role as Orb's Supreme Commander and acted to further strengthen the nation's ties with the Earth Alliance. Seeking to intercept the Minerva, Yuna led an Orb naval fleet alongside an EA fleet commanded by Phantom Pain Captain Neo Roanoke at the Battle of Dardanelles.[2] Just before the Minerva fired its main cannon, the Freedom arrived and disabled it. Then Cagalli launched from the Archangel in her MBF-02 Strike Rouge with her emblem on it and ordered all Orb forces to retreat. However, because Neo Roanoke had convinced him that there would be severe consequences for Orb if they backed out of the fight, Yuna refused to acknowledge that Cagalli was in the Strike Rouge (even though he knew perfectly well that she was), and claimed that she was either being brainwashed or was an imposter, and ordered missiles to be fired at her and the Archangel, but Kira jumped in front of Cagalli and destroyed the approaching missiles.[3]

Battle of Crete[]

In another vain attempt to please the Earth Alliance and make a name for himself, Yuna ordered the Orb fleet to engage the Minerva again at the Battle of Crete. However, this battle went very badly and ended with the destruction of Orb's flagship Takemikazuchi. Although Captain Todaka didn't have a very high opinion or respect for Yuna, he nevertheless urged him to abandon ship, which Yuna did, while Todaka remained on board just as Shinn Asuka delivered the final blow with his Impulse.[4]

ZAFT's invasion of Orb - Operation Fury[]

Later, after Logos was revealed to the world by Gilbert Durandal, Lord Djibril fled to Orb under protection by the Seiran family. However, the Seiran's publicly denied sheltering Lord Djibril in Orb. Their denial was considered worthless and ZAFT invaded the nation. As Yuna entered the command center, he asked out loud why ZAFT would attack in spite of his public denial. Captain Soga stated it was because everyone saw through his obvious lie. Yuna tried defending that they denied harboring the Archangel in the last war, with Soga shouting that this was a completely different situation. As the battle quickly turned against Orb, Cagalli returned to lead her country's forces. As Yuna was unable to successfully command, he was delighted at Cagalli's return and was easily tricked by her into returning control of Orb to her. Her first command was that Yuna be arrested for treason, an order many officers frustrated with his incompetence happily acknowledged, beating him up before subduing him. Yuna was then confronted by Cagalli, who berated him for putting their country in danger before demanding to know where Djibril was. Yuna told the truth: he didn't know and that Djibril was at his house before and was nowhere to be found. Afterwards soldiers escorted Yuna out. Yuna was ultimately killed by a falling ZGMF-2000 GOUF Ignited that landed on him when he attempted to flee from his Orb captors.[5]

Relationships[]

Unato Ema Seiran[]

Yuna fully supported his father's ambition to improve their family's position in the Orb hierarchy, and conspired with his father to undermine Cagailli's authority as Chief Representative, and violated Orb's ideals by joining with the Earth Alliance.

Cagalli Yula Athha[]

On the surface, Yuna appeared to care deeply for Cagalli as his fiancé. However, the two held no love for each other, and Yuna's seeming concern for her was simply a cover to take advantage of her position. Yuna did not respect Cagalli as Orb's Chief Representative, and constantly dismissed and even ridiculed her ideals in front of others as a means of controlling her. This was only furthered when he forbade her from see her twin brother Kira because he was a Coordinator.[6] In accordance with his cowardly nature, Yuna placed his own safey above Cagalli's, hiding behind her as a shield before completely abandoning her when Kira crashed their wedding and kidnapped her.[1] With Cagalli no longer in Orb, Yuna assumed her position as Chief Representative, and when he encountered her trying to stop Orb from fighting against ZAFT during the Battle of Dardanelles, he had his troops open fire upon her out of fear that she would ruin his plans with the Earth Alliance. When Orb was invaded by ZAFT, Yuna returned power to Cagalli out of desperation despite previously almost having her killed, to which Cagalli had him arrested for treason.[7] When he tried to convince Cagalli that he did nothing wrong, Cagalli hit him for all trouble he had caused her and for Orb, outright furious that he abandoned any responsibility for the nation and its people.[8]

Athrun Zala[]

Yuna despised Athrun, both for being a Coordinator and for his relationship with Cagalli, seeing it as an obstacle preventing him from taking advantage of her.[9] When Athrun left for PLANT, Yuna pressed Cagalli into marriage and forbade her from seeing him again to ensure he no longer interfered.[6]

Neo Roanoke[]

Yuna tried to make a good impression on Neo Roanoke by putting the Orb's force in the frontline because he was from the Earth Alliance. But in the Battle of Dardanelles, Cagalli appeared on the battlefield demanding the Orb's forces to stand down. When Neo demanded Yuna an explanation and made threats, Yuna cowardly responded that he has no ideas who the person is. Fearing that Neo's forces will attack Orb if they do not fight for Earth Alliance, he orders Cagalli's Mobile Suit to be shot down.
