The GAT-X105E Strike Noir Gundam is a Mobile Suit introduced in the OVA Mobile Suit Gundam SEED C.E. 73: STARGAZER. It is piloted by Sven Cal Bayang.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

The Strike Noir was the GAT-X105E Strike E equipped with the AQM/E-X09S Noir Striker.[1][2][3] Based on the AQM/E-M1 Integrated Weapons Striker Pack (I.W.S.P.), the Noir Striker retained the design philosophy of being able to handle every combat situation, and was equipped with a variety of weapons for long range, medium range, and close range engagements. However, it was specialized for close combat. As a result, the Strike Noir was rarely deployed alone and often fought as a group with the GAT-X1022 Blu Duel Gundam and the GAT-X103AP Verde Buster Gundam, with the former excelling at close range and the latter excelling at long range.[2][4]

Due to the development of high-capacity power packs, the Noir Striker was also protected by Phase Shift armor. However, since the productivity of Phase Shift armor material was still low, it was estimated that the number of fully completed Noir Strikers was less than two digits. In addition, since the Noir Striker, like its predcessor, required a skillful pilot to master, there was no record of it being supplied to regular units. It was speculated that an unknown number may have been supplied to Extended pilots, though details were unclear.[2]

Armaments[]

  • M2M5 "Todesschrecken" 12.5mm Automatic CIWS
A pair of shell-firing armament built into the head. Compared to its predecessor, the "Igelstellung", the caliber of the "Todesschrecken" was vastly reduced due to its role as an anti-personnel and light vehicle weapon, instead prioritizing ammo capacity.[5] Due to the change in ammunition, its rate of fire was higher than its predecessor.[2]
  • M8F-SB1 Beam Rifle Shorty
A shortened, more compact version of a full-sized beam rifle. The Beam Rifle Shorty was essentially a mobile suit-sized handgun. It was designed to maximize maneuverability during close combat. However, since the barrel length, which was vital for beam convergence and direction, was massively reduced, its effective range was reduced by 15% compared to the full-sized model. The Strike Noir carried a pair of these weapons on its side skirt armor.[2]
  • MR-Q10 "Fragarach 3" Beam Blade
A large anti-ship sword. In addition to the physical blade, it also had a beam edge, making it effective even against Phase Shift armor. A pair of them were mounted on the Noir Striker.[1][2] Its basic structure resembled the MR-Q17X "Griffon 2" Beam Blade used by the stolen ZGMF-X88S Gaia Gundam, suggesting a design connection.[1]
  • MAU-M3E4 Twin Linear Gun
A development of the MAU-M3 series linear guns used by the TS-MA4F Exus, which had exceptional reliability and cost-performance. The MAU-M3E4 was specialized for close combat and prioritized short range destructive power, rate of fire and power saving over long range performance. As such, its projectiles had a high muzzle velocity. A pair of these weapons were mounted on the Noir Striker.[1][2]
  • 57mm High-Energy Beam Rifle w/ 175mm Grenade Launcher
Originally developed for the GAT-X102 Duel Gundam, this was the OMNI Enforcer's oldest model of directed energy weapon. Due to its use by ZAFT pilot Yzak Joule, the weapon was well-regarded by both the OMNI Enforcer and ZAFT. In particular, its ability to fire both beam and grenades was highly praised by experienced pilots. As such, despite being a prototype weapon, this weapon's production number rivalled mass production weapons. A pair of this beam rifle was used by the Strike Noir on some missions.[2]

Special Equipment & Features[]

The Strike Noir could dismount the Noir Striker and mount other Striker Packs when necessary. This ability was demonstrated in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED C.E. 73 Δ Astray, when the Strike Noir was heavily damaged by the GSF-YAM01 Δ Astray and had to equip the AQM/E-M1 I.W.S.P. Striker used by a GAT-01A2R 105 Slaughter Dagger.
  • Power Extender
Developed by Morgenröte, the power extender, as its name suggested, was a power pack enhancement system that extended the operating time of the mobile suit.[6] The dark active color of Strike Noir's Phase Shift armor was a side effect of the power extender, which caused the armor's active color to shift in hue, in a similar manner to the MBF-02 Strike Rouge.[2][7]
A new version of Phase Shift armor with greater energy efficiency. The voltage applied to the armor can be adjusted, and this changes the armor's strength and color to meet the needs of the mobile suit and its pilot. These settings can change automatically if programmed beforehand. Strike E's Variable Phase Shift armor changes its colors according to the Striker Pack it is equipped with at the moment, but this only applies to the Noir Striker and Another Trial Striker Packs.
  • EQS1358 & EQS1358T Rocket Anchor
A rocket-propelled anchor of the model EQS1358 is mounted in each hand, and in the front and back of each sole, for a total of six. These anchors can be used for various purposes, such as for maneuvering or to grapple a unit and throw it over a short distance. The attached cable is coated with a special polymer that allows the pilot to adjust the physical properties (thickness, strength, etc.) of the cable upon firing. A variant of this, the EQS1358T, is mounted in the back of the Noir Striker.[1][2]

History[]

After the First Alliance-PLANT War, as part of the "Actaeon Project" MS development plan, at least one other GAT-X105 Strike Gundam was re-manufactured. The unit was assigned to Phantom Pain pilot, Sven Cal Bayang, and subsequently upgraded into the GAT-X105E Strike E. Sven's Strike E was typically equipped with the Noir Striker, becoming the GAT-X105E Strike Noir Gundam, and often work in a team consisting of Mudie Holcroft and her GAT-X1022 Blu Duel Gundam, as well as Shams Couza and his GAT-X103AP Verde Buster Gundam.

In C.E. 73, the Strike Noir, along with the Blu Duel and Verde Buster, defended an Earth Alliance base against Patrick Zala loyalist guerillas who emerged in the wake of the "Break The World" Incident. Sven and his Strike Noir subsequently supervised a squad of GAT-01A2R 105 Slaughter Daggers as they destroyed a Coordinator refugee camp where some of the terrorists were allegedly trained.

Later, Sven in the Strike Noir engaged in a brief duel with Martian Coordinator Ergnes Brahe in the GSF-YAM01 Δ Astray, who later escaped in his ship, the Acidalium. Shortly afterward, when Orb joined a treaty with the Alliance, Sven was assigned to lead a squad of five Slaughter Daggers piloted by Orb soldiers in pursuit of the Acidalium. During the battle, Strike Noir's striker pack was damaged by Δ Astray and Sven changed over to the I.W.S.P. (which was being used by one of the Orb pilots' Slaughter Daggers) to continue the fight. He then defeated Δ Astray.

Sven and his Strike Noir later returned to his Phantom Pain squad and escorted the Bonaparte as it delivered the GFAS-X1 Destroy Gundam to Neo Roanoke's unit. They were attacked along the way, and while Blu Duel was defeated with its pilot killed, the attacking ZAFT force was wiped out and the Bonaparte arrived at its destination.[8]

Afterward, the remainder of Sven's squad was assigned to attack the Deep Space Survey and Development Organization's (DSSD) space station, to capture the GSX-401FW Stargazer Gundam's AI unit. During the battle, Sven was caught off guard by Stargazer's unorthodox capabilities, and Strike Noir's left arm was sliced off, along with other less significant damages. Stargazer's pilot Selene McGriff then grabbed the Strike Noir and used the DSSD station's propulsion laser to launch both mobile suits away from the battlefield. They were carried all the way to Venus, where Selene rescued Sven and transferred Strike Noir's remaining power to the Stargazer. The heavily damaged Strike Noir was abandoned as Stargazer returned to Earth.[9]

Notes & Trivia[]

  • The Strike Noir is the second Strike-derived unit to bear a color-themed name, "noir" being the French word for black, and the first being the MBF-02 Strike Rouge.
  • The concept of the Strike Noir's rocket anchors originated with the Destiny MSV mobile suit GAT-SO2R N Dagger N, though their in-universe connection is unclear.
  • According to the Master Grade instruction manual, the tip of the "Fragarach 3" Beam Blade has a "PS Point", implying that it was equipped with Phase Shift armor. However, this was not mentioned in the manual's description for the weapon, and details are unclear.
  • The Strike Noir appears in the Extreme Vs. series as a 2500 cost unit under Sven. The Strike Noir's beam rifles can fire two shots at a time, and the Strike Noir is among the few units capable of attacking multiple targets at the same time. The unit can also perform a cartwheel sideways or a backflip to dodge enemy attacks while also firing at them with the beam rifles at the same time. The suit can also use its twin linear gun as well as summon Verde Buster or Blu Duel. The Strike Noir's rocket anchor can be used to pull an opponent into the Strike Noir's melee range or can be used to propel the Strike Noir high either to get close to a target or to run away. For its burst attack the Strike Noir will fire its anchors to fling an opponent into the air before flinging its beam blade at the target.
