The CB-0000G/C Reborns Gundam (aka Reborns Gundam, Reborns Cannon) is a transformable mobile suit introduced in season two of Mobile Suit Gundam 00 and is piloted by Ribbons Almark.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

The Reborns Gundam was created using mobile suit technologies accumulated in the quantum processing system, Veda, and it served as the personal mobile suit of Ribbons Almark, leader of a group of Innovades who called themselves Innovators.[1][2][3][4] This mobile suit was said to be a special machine that inherited the functions, performance and weaponry of all mobile suits before it.[2][3][5][6] The Reborns Gundam can instantly transform between the versatile "Gundam Mode", also known as the "Reborns Gundam", and the long-range shooting specialized "Cannon Mode", also known as the "Reborns Cannon", allowing it to handle any combat situations.[1][2][3][7] Furthermore, it has a large output thanks to the Twin Drive System and is a match for the Celestial Being's GN-0000+GNR-010 00 Raiser in combat.[1][2][8][9] Unlike other mobile suits deployed by the Innovators, the Reborns Gundam did not receive support from Veda and was thus unaffected when the GN-009 Seraphim Gundam activated its Trial System to forcibly shut down all machines linked to Veda.[1][4][10][11]

Ribbons had named the Reborns Gundam based on his own name.[12][13][14] The Reborns Gundam's basic design was based on the general-purpose CB-001 1 Gundam and its support-use, artillery combat counterpart, the CBY-077 GN Cannon.[2][15][16][17] Both mobile suits were developed by Veda a decade ago for a cancelled, alternate plan whereby the Celestial Being's armed interventions were conducted by Gundam Meisters who were Innovades instead of human beings.[12][16][18][19] The functions of the 1 Gundam and GN Cannon were combined into a single machine, the Reborns Gundam, to enable Ribbons to fight independently as he did not want to rely on his comrades.[2][3][12][20] Besides Gundam Mode and Cannon Mode, the mobile suit originally had a third mode, the Tank Mode, but it was removed when the Twin Drive System was installed.[3][12][13][17] To differentiate the Twin Drive System equipped version of Reborns Gundam from the original version, the latter became known as the CB-0000G/C/T Reborns Gundam Origin.[6][12][13] The technology for the Twin Drive System originated from the GN-0000 00 Gundam and was acquired through theft by a spy.[2][5][12][13]

The Reborns Gundam's weapons were enhanced through the use of various Gundams' design data stored within Veda, and consisted of a GN Buster Rifle that fires powerful particle beams, a pair of high output Large GN Beam Sabers, twelve wireless, remote-controlled GN Fin Fangs, two Egner Whips for delivering electric shock attacks, six rapid-fire GN Vulcans, and a GN Shield for defense.[3][4][5][14] Most of these weapons can be used in both Gundam and Cannon Modes, and their usage can change depending on the mode.[1][3][4][8] The Gundam Mode emphasizes mobility and excels at close-to-mid range combat.[4][21] It primarily uses the Large GN Beam Sabers for close combat, and the GN Buster Rifle as well as the GN Fin Fangs for ranged combat.[1][8][21] The Cannon Mode's mobility is slightly reduced compared to the Gundam Mode's, but it has high firepower and excels at mid-to-long range artillery combat.[4][6][20][22] It primarily uses the GN Buster Rifle as well as four large-sized GN Fin Fangs which in this mode function as powerful beam cannons.[1][3][8][20] The Cannon Mode also utilizes the Egner Whips to compensate for its poor close combat capability and can wield the Large GN Beam Sabers when required.[1][3][8][9]

The Reborns Gundam has a simple transformation structure, with the back of the Gundam Mode turning into the front of the Cannon Mode and vice versa.[1][4][14][20] Each mode has its own head unit and manipulators.[1][3][4][20] Unsurprisingly, the Gundam Mode has a Gundam-type head, with characteristic features such as twin eyes and large antenna.[1][4][8][20] For the Cannon Mode, it has a goggle-type head and the sensors in its head visor are of the same series as that of the GNX-607T/BW GN-XII Cannon to improve long-range shooting precision.[2][4][9][20] It should be noted that the GN-XII Cannon's sensors utilized technology derived from the GN Cannon.[15][17][23] The Gundam Mode's manipulators have five fingers each to facilitate the use of portable weaponry such as the GN Buster Rifle, while the Cannon Mode has three-fingers manipulators that double as Egner Whips.[1][3][4][20] To absorb recoil and improve stability during bombardment, the Cannon Mode adopted a front leaning posture with bent knee joints, and this resulted in it having a shorter head height than the Gundam Mode.[2][3][4][6] Additionally, the feet of the Cannon Mode are spread wider than the Gundam Mode's to increase the contact surface with the ground during ground-based bombardment.[6][20]

Using information obtained by Anew Returner, an Innovator spy who infiltrated Celestial Being, the Reborns Gundam was equipped with both Trans-Am System and Twin Drive System.[2][3][5][14] When activated, the Trans-Am System increased a mobile suit's output by three fold for a limited time and caused the machine to glow red.[1][5][8][24] The Twin Drive System is a system whereby two synchronized GN Drives produce a higher amount of GN Particles than that of two unsynchronized GN Drives.[22][25][26][27] Since the Innovators do not possess the original GN Drives, the Reborns Gundam's Twin Drive System utilized two GN Drive Taus that were mounted on the elbows.[1][5][20][28] However, this is also the Reborns Gundam's only deficiency as GN Drive Tau is inferior to the original GN Drive in certain aspects, such as having limited operating time.[2][3][26][29] Ribbons considered the GN Drive Tau to be the cause of his defeat by the 00 Raiser, but in reality, technological innovations have almost eliminated the performance difference between the two types of GN Drives.[2][3][5][6]

Armaments[]

  • GN Buster Rifle
A portable firearm with a long attack range and capable of firing powerful particle beams.[1][3][9][20] The red-colored, bottom section of the rifle is connected to the Reborns Gundam's forearm, allowing the weapon to draw GN Particles directly from the elbow's GN Drive Tau.[3][4][5][20] The GN Buster Rifle is used by both the Gundam Mode and Cannon Mode, with the Gundam Mode able to grip the rifle's handle using its five fingers manipulator.[1][3][5][8] In Cannon Mode, the rifle remains connected to the mobile suit's forearm and is operated without being held by the Cannon Mode's manipulator.[1][3][20][21] However, the rifle becomes unsuitable for precise shooting in this mode.[3][5][6]
  • GN Shield
Mounted on the Reborns Gundam's forearm, the GN Shield is made of E-Carbon and can deploy a GN Field on its surface.[3][5][14][20] The upper half of the GN Shield stores four Small GN Fin Fangs, two on each side.[1][3][4][20] These Small GN Fin Fangs can launch from the shield to function as wireless, remote-controlled weaponry, or serve as small beam guns while stored on the shield.[1][3][4][20] The sections of the GN Shield storing the Small GN Fin Fangs will slide out to the left and right to allow them to launch from the shield, and when they are deployed as small beam guns while stored on the shield.[1][3][4][9]
  • Small GN Fin Fang
The Reborns Gundam is equipped with eight Small GN Fin Fangs, four stored on the GN Shield and another four stored on the Gundam Mode's rear skirt armor/Cannon Mode's front skirt armor.[1][3][4][20] These wireless, remote-controlled weaponry can fire beams or emit a beam blade from their tips to attack the target from various directions simultaneously.[1][3][4][20] While their small size resulted in low attack power, it also makes them difficult to intercept.[3][30] Additionally, they can be deployed quickly, have high speed and maneuverability, and can be used in a variety of ways.[1][3][6][30] The four Small GN Fin Fangs stored on the GN Shield are primarily for defense, such as intercepting missiles and enemy's remote weaponry, but they can also be used for offense.[1][3][8][20] These four Small GN Fin Fangs double as small beam guns while stored on the shield.[3][4][5][6]
  • Large GN Fin Fang
Four Large GN Fin Fangs are stored on the Gundam Mode's back, and as implied by their name, these wireless, remote-controlled weaponry are larger than the Small GN Fin Fangs.[1][3][4][20] The Large GN Fin Fangs can fire powerful beams from their tips to attack enemy from various directions.[1][4][20][30] In fact, they have one of the highest attack power among various wireless, remote weaponry, but their maneuverability is one of the lowest.[30] The four Large GN Fin Fangs are facing the front and located on both sides of the chest when in Cannon Mode.[1][3][4][5] The Cannon Mode uses the Large GN Fin Fangs as powerful fixed beam cannons, and they are also referred to as "GN Cannons" in this mode.[1][3][4][9] Thus, they take on role of the Cannon Mode's main cannons and display high bombardment capabilities.[3][5][30] In fact, since the Large GN Fin Fangs are connected to the mobile suit when they fire in this mode, they exhibit higher firepower then when they are operating as remote weaponry.[6] In Cannon Mode, the Large GN Fin Fangs can fire individually, or they can fire in unison to produce a much larger and extremely powerful beam shot.[1][6][8][14]
  • Large GN Beam Saber
A close combat weapon of the Reborns Gundam, it emits a beam blade during use.[1][4][8][20] Not only is the Large GN Beam Saber bigger than the sabers used by other Gundams, it also has higher output as well.[3][4][5][6] The Reborns Gundam mounts two Large GN Beam Sabers on the red-colored armor sections above the pair of top storage mounts for the Large GN Fin Fangs, and they are held in the mobile suit's manipulators when used.[1][3][5][20] The Large GN Beam Sabers fold down into the red-colored armor sections in Cannon Mode, as this mode is not meant for close combat.[1][3][5][20] Despite this, the Cannon Mode is fully capable of wielding the Large GN Beam Sabers when required.[1][6][8]
  • Egner Whip
The left and right manipulators of the Cannon Mode can be launched as wire-guided, electric shock weaponry known as "Egner Whips".[1][3][4][20] When used, the Egner Whips are propelled via two small thrusters located on the back of each manipulator, one on the left side and one on the right side, and additional thin wires can be deployed from the manipulators' fingertips to better capture the enemy unit.[1][3][4][20] The Egner Whips can penetrate GN Field, and the powerful electric shock they deliver is for damaging the internal precision equipment of enemy machine as well as to injure the enemy pilot.[3][4][6][20] Egner Whips of different designs were earlier used by the GNMA-Y0001 Empruss and GNMA-0001V Regnant, and have proven effective against Celestial Being's Gundams.[9][20][31][32] The Egner Whips also served to compensate for the Cannon Mode's poor close combat capabilities.[9]
  • GN Vulcan
The tips of the Cannon Mode's three-fingers manipulators are equipped with GN Vulcans, which have excellent rapid fire capabilities and are used for restricting enemy movements.[4][14][33][34]

Special Equipment & Features[]

Thanks to the design data brought back from the Celestial Being by the Innovator spy, Anew Returner, the Reborns Gundam was equipped with the Twin Drive System.[3][4][14][28] This made it the second mobile suit after the Celestial Being's GN-0000 00 Gundam to have the system.[1][8] Through synchronizing two GN Drives, the Twin Drive System produced a higher amount of GN Particles than that of two unsynchronized GN Drives.[22][25][26][27] Since the Innovators do not possess the original GN Drives, the Reborns Gundam's Twin Drive System utilized two GN Drive Taus mounted on the elbows.[1][5][21][28] While both types of GN Drives produce GN Particles, they do so through different methods, and the GN Drive Tau has a limited operating time while the original GN Drive can function semi-perpetually.[26][29][35] As such, the GN Drive Tau is also known as a "Pseudo Solar Reactor", with "Solar Reactor" being another name for the GN Drive.[26][29][35]
A Twin Drive System using two GN Drive Taus is unfortunately not the same as a Twin Drive System using two original GN Drives.[22][26] The former is said to be an imitation of the latter and only has some of the Twin Drive System's effects.[22][26] While the amount of GN Particles produced by a Twin Drive System using two original GN Drives is squared that of a single original GN Drive, it is currently unclear if the amount of GN Particles produced by a Twin Drive System using two GN Drive Taus is squared that of a single GN Drive Tau.[22][26][25][36] However, simulations conducted by the Innovators showed that a Twin Drive System using GN Drive Taus has comparable performance to a Twin Drive System using original GN Drives.[28] Additionally, the Reborns Gundam's output is said to rival that of the GN-0000+GNR-010 00 Raiser, a more powerful version of the 00 Gundam.[9][14] It is known that technological innovations have almost eliminated the performance difference between the two types of GN Drives.[2][3][5][6]
When activated, this system releases at once all the compressed high-density GN Particles accumulated in a machine, enhancing its thrust and defensive capabilities as well as allowing it to perform at three times its normal output for a limited time.[5][24][26][37] The entire machine also glows red and afterimages are generated during movements.[1][5][8] This system was originally usable only by the original GN Drive-equipped Gundams, but the Innovators created a version usable by their GN Drive Tau-equipped mobile suits after Anew Returner brought back data from Celestial Being.[1][10][26][38] However, the GN Drive Tau becomes inoperable after using Trans-Am and must be replaced, and until then, the mobile suit operates using the particles remaining in its GN Condensers.[38][39][40]
A system that allows a mobile weapon's pilot to control the machine's remote weaponry.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • The Reborns (リボーンズ) Gundam has a near identical katakana spelling as the name of its pilot, Ribbons (リボンズ) Almark, apart for one long vowel.
  • The Reborns Gundam is likely a homage to the RX-93-ν2 Hi-ν Gundam (Gundam Mode) and the RX-77-2 Guncannon (Cannon Mode).
  • The Reborns Gundam/Cannon is also unlockable in Gundam vs. Gundam NEXT Plus as a PSP-exclusive unit. It can activate Trans-Am once per life, changing its standard GN Buster Rifle (Gundam Mode) and GN Cannon (Cannon Mode) shots into "Gerobi" shots. It also allows the Reborns to deploy its GN Fin Fangs, which it cannot do without Trans-Am. Additionally, if it finishes off a unit from Gundam 00 (Exia, Virtue/Nadleeh, 00 Raiser and Reborns), it will assume a hidden win pose showing a missing leg where it is holding a discarded GN Drive which mirrors what happened in the final battle between Ribbons and Setsuna.
    • In Full Boost however, Reborns no longer requires Trans-Am to deploy its large Fin Fangs, though it is required to be in its Cannon mode to deploy any of its Fangs. It also pays further tribute to Amuro with its EX Burst which blasts the opponent in the air, identical to the Last Shooting which it shares with both Gundam and Nu.
  • Because of the similar phonetic pronunciation shared between Fin Funnels and Fin Fangs in Japanese, games where the Reborns Gundam can be piloted by anyone (ex: SD Gundam G Generation and Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3) has Amuro uniquely shout out "Fin Fangs!" during the attacks that use them while piloting the Reborns. The reverse applies for Ribbons while piloting the Nu Gundam.
    • Despite Amuro and Ribbons not sharing the same English dub voice actor, the reference is kept in the English dub of Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3.
  • In Gundam Memories, and the Dynasty Warriors Gundam series, the Reborns's beam saber is constantly active and in its hand, mostly to stay faithful to the anime where Ribbons spent the entire final battle against Setsuna with a beam saber active whenever it transformed into its Gundam mode.
  • The SD Gundam G Generation games shows that the Reborns Gundam can erect a GN Field of its own similar to Seravee even though it never displays such an ability in the anime or in any other game.
  • One of Ribbons' unique battle quote in Super Robot Wars Z2 Saisei-hen indicated that Ribbon claimed that Reborns Gundam is the strongest Gundam of all, even though he was not a significant threat compared to some other bosses in the game.
  • To obtain the Technique attribute version of Reborns Gundam at Gundam Breaker Mobile, players must build it from event blueprints during a limited time when it is available as a build project. This is very resource-intensive process, as each part requires a combination of twelve total Material which can only be obtained by rolling the current gacha capsules on specific weeks to get the number of necessary material for the part. it would take at least ninety-six rolls over four weeks to craft the parts.
