The Black Tri-Stars (黒い三連星 Kuroi Sanrensei^?) are a mobile suit team featured in the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin manga and its OVA adaptation.

History[]

The Black Tri-Stars were a group of soldiers that were scouted and used by Dozle Zabi as test pilots for Zeon's mobile suit development program. After the completion of their MS-05B Zaku I, the group participated in the Battle of Mare Smythii as they attempted to recapture Dr. Trenov Y. Minovsky before he could defect to the Federation. While Zeon's pilots and their units were superior to their Federation counterparts, the mission without a complete victory as Gaia had accidentally killed Dr. Minovsky when a Guncannon he destroyed collapsed on the doctor.

Nonetheless, tensions continued to heighten between both sides as the Black Tri-Stars and other mobile suit pilots were directed to Side 5, where they were to ambush Admiral Johann Ibrahim Revil's fleet at Loum with Zeon's new MS-06F Zaku II. The attack saw the team reach their zenith as they found and attacked Revil's flagship and later took the commander as prisoner.

Following their battle at Loum, the team would continue to serve admirably before being sent to Earth after the death of Garma Zabi and were presented with new MS-09 Dom as they were sent to hunt down the Federation warship White Base during its journey towards Jaburo. By chance, the team met members of the White Base's crew at the neutral town of Cuzco. Gaia would track the ship down to the Urubamba Gorge and the Black Tri-Stars began using their newly-developed "Jet-Stream Attack", attacking in waves and overwhelming most of the ship's units.

Amuro Ray, the pilot of the RX-78-02 Gundam, discovered the formation's weakness in leaving its members in the rear exposed, and used Gaia's attack as an opening to strike and kill Mash before he could draw his weapon, and both Gaia and Ortega were forced to withdraw after destroying Matilda Ajan's Medea.

The pair, now aided by a full squadron of Doms, would seek revenge near Lake Van, where they surrounded Sayla Mass's Core Booster, before attempting to attack Amuro, who had come to rescue his ally. Amuro's skills, however, had greatly improved since their first battle, and he would dispatch the entire squad, including both Gaia and Ortega.
