The Observation Shuttle was an observation spacecraft used by the Principality of Zeon during the One Year War. It was introduced in Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO: The Hidden One Year War.
Technology & Combat Characteristics[]
Designed for data collection in space, the Observation Shuttle was equipped with intelligence-gathering sensor and camera at the front. Despite its small size, it was well-suited for gathering combat data under Minovsky particle interference. It was not equipped with any weapon, though there were cases of weapons being mounted above the cockpit.[1][2]
History[]
Battle of Loum[]
During the Battle of Loum, the 603rd Technical Evaluation Unit field-tested the QCX-76A Jormungand beam cannon. However, as the battle raged on, the Jormungand did not receive any indirect fire instructions and thus failed to hit any target. To collect observation data for the Jormungand, 603rd members Engineering Lieutenant Oliver May and Lieutenant Hideto Washiya boarded an oservation shuttle and flew straight ahead.[3]
Suddenly, a large number of MS-06 Zaku II appeared from behind the Zeon battle line and passed the observation shuttle from behind. Lieutenant Char Aznable's red-painted MS-06S Zaku II Commander Type stopped by the observation shuttle and used light signal to ask them to leave, telling them that a mobile suit attack was taking place as planned.[3]
As the Zakus devastated the Federation fleets, the 603rd realized the Jormungand was being ignored in favor of the mobile suits. Suddenly, several stray missiles exploded near the Jormungand, damaging its command center. All of its gunnery officers were killed, and Chief Gunnery Officer Aleksandro Hemme was mortally wounded by shrapnels. Soon after, from the observation shuttle, May warned the Jormungand that a damaged Magellan-class battleship was heading directly for them. With his dying breath, Hemme fired one last shot at the Federation battleship, obliterating it.[3]
MS-06RP Mock Battle[]
In February, U.C. 0079, Shin Matsunaga, piloting a MS-06RP Zaku II High Mobility Test Type, engaged in a mock battle with Ramba Ral in his MS-05B Zaku I. Test pilots Elliot Rem and Olga Talvitie observed the battle in an observation shuttle.[4]
As the battle heated up, the MS-06RP's engine suddenly lost control and sent the mobile suit flying off into the distance. Elliot and Olga tried to chase after it in the observation shuttle, but the mobile suit quickly disappeared from the shuttle's observation range.[4]
Battle of A Baoa Qu[]
In the immediate aftermath of the Battle of A Baoa Qu, members of the Invisible Knights rendezvoused aboard a Papua-class transport using observation shuttles.[5]
