GAT-X105+P204QX Lightning Strike Gundam is a variant of the GAT-X105 Strike Gundam introduced in the original design series SEED-MSV. It is piloted by Mu La Flaga.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

The P204QX Lightning Striker was a Striker Pack designed to extend the operational time of the GAT-X105 Strike Gundam by 150% as requested by the Earth Alliance forces. This was achieved through a pair of battery packs mounted on the rear armor. In addition, the Lightning Striker featured a pair of backpack-mounted Composite Pods, which incorporated heat vents, rangefinder sensors, and verniers. Due to its large battery reserve, the Lightning Strike Gundam was capable of supplying power to friendly mobile suits (though how this is done is unclear). The Lightning Strike Gundam's primary armament is the Type 70-31 Electromagnetic Cannon, which was designed for long-range sniping and can be stored as two separate parts under the forearms when not in use, and in this state, the part under the right forearm can still serve as a ranged weapon.[1]

Armaments[]

  • "Igelstellung" 75mm multi-barrel CIWS
Mounted in the Strike's head are two 75mm multi-barrel CIWS. These light projectile weapons are used to intercept missiles and to destroy lightly armored vehicles.
  • "Armor Schneider" Combat Knife
Stored in the Strike's side skirt armor is a pair of folding combat knives. These knives do not need power from the suit, can be thrown, and their blades vibrate at high speed allowing them to pierce through most armor except PS armor.
  • Type 70-31 Electromagnetic Cannon
The primary armament of the Lightning Striker, the Type 70-31 Electromagnetic Cannon ("Electromagnetic cannon" is Orb's designation for railguns) is an improved model of the Type 70 that combined compactness with high firepower. It can be separated into two halves and stored under the suit's forearms. In this state, the part under the right forearm can be used to fire Type 71 Enhanced Armor Piercing Rounds.[1]
In its combined form, the Type 70-31 is approximately twice as long as the Strike Gundam's height. It is powered through a cable connected to the right battery pack on the rear armor. When used in conjunction with the rangefinder system mounted in the Composite Pods on the left and right sides of the backpack, it is capable of long-range sniping with a CEP (circular error probable) of 120 kilometers on Earth and over 10,000 kilometers in space (with the correct magnetic field/gravity field corrections).[1]

Special Equipment & Features[]

The key feature of the Strike is its ability to equip additional equipment in the form of striker packs. Each striker pack is designed to outfit the Strike with the equipment needed to fulfill specific combat roles with maximum efficiency.
As with all of the G Project mobile suits, the Strike is equipped with phase shift armor. When activated the Strike's color is changed from a light grey to a white scheme with a bit of blue and red mixed in. Phase Shift armor, when activated, renders the Strike immune to physical attacks such as bullets, the GINN sword, or against missiles. However Phase Shift armor continually drains the battery of energy, shortening the mobile suit's combat endurance, and uses up additional energy when it is hit.

History[]

The high performance of the GAT-X105 Strike came at the cost of high power consumption. As such, the OMNI Enforcer contracted the IDEX corporation to develop a Striker Pack capable of extending its operational time by 150%. However, when the size of the power pack was increased, the extra weight required more thrusters to compensate for the drop in mobility, which generated more waste heat, requiring a new cooling system, which increased the weight even further, creating a vicious cycle. Unable to solve this problem, IDEX shelved the development of the Lightning Striker.[1]

Lightning Striker's development was later continued by Orb Union arms manufacturer Morgenroete, which successfully developed high capacity power packs and a high performance miniaturized cooling system, solving the problems previously plaguing it. Lightning Unit 1 was assembled within the Izumo-class battleship Kusanagi after it escaped from Orb, and was equipped on the Strike Gundam piloted by Mu La Flaga. It was destroyed during a battle that unexpectedly occurred during testing.[1]

According to data collected up until its destruction, the Lightning Strike Gundam was more effective as a power resupply unit for friendly mobile suits than as an offensive weapon. Furthermore, several related individuals claimed that power packs that met the OMNI Enforcer's requirements already existed in the civilian market, and the development of the Lightning Striker only continued due to backroom deals between the military-industrial complex and the military leadership. The truth of this is unclear.[1]

The damaged Lightning Striker was later repaired, and in C.E.73 it was equipped on a GAT-01A2R 105 Slaughter Dagger piloted by Gard Dell Hokuha, creating the Lightning 105 Slaughter Dagger.[2][3] The Lighting Striker's 70-31 Electromagnetic Cannon was then used in an attempt to sink the Martians' ship, the Acidalium, but the Lightning 105 Slaughter Dagger was soon defeated by Isaac Mau's TMF/A-802W2 Kerberos BuCUE Hound and the Lightning Striker was destroyed again.[3]

Notes & Trivia[]

  • The Lightning Striker Pack is unlockable in Super Robot Wars W based on Mu La Flaga's performance in the game's first half. It is equipped by default on the Strike Gundam but it can also be used by the Strike Rouge and the Skygrasper. Equipping the Lightning Striker Pack grants a unit the resupply ability, referencing its ability to recharge friendly units.
