The GAT-X399/Q Wild Dagger is a mobile suit introduced in the original design series Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny MSV.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

A prototype mobile suit developed by the OMNI Enforcer, as indicated by its model number, the GAT-X399/Q Wild Dagger adopted the transformable X300 series frame. Its production cost was extremely low as it reused many parts from the GAT-02L2 Dagger L. The "Q" in its model number stood for "Quadruped", and it was designed to counter the quadrupedal mobile suits used by ZAFT. Originally a purely quadrupedal design similar to its ZAFT counterparts, the Wild Dagger was redesigned as a transformable mobile suit following the OMNI Enforcer's capture and analysis of the ZGMF-X88S Gaia Gundam, which was capable of transforming between a mobile suit and a quadruped form. As such, the Wild Dagger heavily resembled the Gaia Gundam in both of its forms.[1]

As the OMNI Enforcer gradually transformed into an internal suppression force during the Second Alliance-PLANT War, the Wild Dagger was specialized for Counter Insurgency (COIN) warfare. During COIN operations, the psychological effect the Wild Dagger had on the enemy was immense, even surpassing its mobility. Its head in quadruped form was armed with a 46mm Gatling gun. Its back turret adopted a universal standard and could be fitted with numerous optional weapons, including a ballistic cannon, a beam cannon, or a missile launcher. Its beam sabers, mounted on two tilt-pivot on the waist, could be deployed to the side of the unit and cut targets while moving in quadruped form. It was also equipped with a tail-mounted 175mm multipurpose smoothbore cannon. Finally, it retained the hardpoints of the original Dagger L, which could mount shields and other equipment.[1]

Armaments[]

  • M2M5 Todesschrecken 12.5mm Automatic CIWS
The Wild Dagger has two 12.5mm CIWS mounted in its head and they are usable only in MS Form. CIWS is typically inadequate for dealing with mobile suit-grade armor, but is sufficient for destroying small targets such as missiles, ground vehicles, and other soft targets.
  • 46mm Gatling Gun
A characteristic weapon of the Wild Dagger, symbolic of its role as an anti-insurgency mobile suit. This six-barreled Gatling gun was mounted in the Quadruped Form's head and is usable only in this Form.[1]
  • Beam Saber
A beam saber is stored on each of the Wild Dagger's side skirt armor, and is handheld when used in MS Form. In Quadruped Form, the beam sabers could pivot outward to function in a similar manner to the Gaia Gundam's wing blades.[1]
  • 175mm Multipurpose Smoothbore Cannon
Mounted in the tail, it was used to attack enemy targets when the mobile suit is in Quadruped Form and turns to have its rear-facing them. The cannon's firing angle could be controlled by adjusting the Wild Dagger's four legs. The cannon remains functional while the suit is moving in Quadruped Form, in this way, it could be used to attack pursuing units while retreating.[1]
  • M703K Beam Carbine
The same ranged handheld beam weapon as the Dagger L, the beam it fires is not as strong as most beam rifles but it is capable of rapid fire, and its small size makes it easier to wield. The beam carbine is mainly used in MS Form.
  • Shield
The Wild Dagger could mount the same type of shield as the Dagger L.[1]
  • Beam Boomerang
An alternative weapon that can be mounted on the Quadruped Form's head. It seems to be mainly used in MS Form, whether the Quadruped Form can use it or not is unknown. The beam boomerang is a throwing weapon that emits a short beam blade on one end, and can return to the owner after throwing, often catching enemy units by surprise.

Special Equipment & Features[]

  • Multipurpose Turret
Located on the suit's back, it is for mounting additional weaponry like missile pods, beam cannons, etc.[1]

History[]

On uneven terrain, OMNI Enforcer often struggled against ZAFT's quadrupedal mobile suits, the TMF/A-802 BuCUE and the TMF/A-803 LaGOWE, due to their superior mobility. The GAT-X399/Q Wild Dagger was developed to counter them, but due to the exorbitant development cost and the end of the First Alliance-PLANT War, the project was shelved. However, in C.E. 73, development of the Wild Dagger resumed following the capture and analysis of the Gaia Gundam, shortly before the outbreak of the Second Alliance-PLANT War. Having analyzed the Gaia Gundam, the Wild Dagger was redesigned from a quadruped mobile suit into a transformable mobile suit similar to the Gaia. Despite being a prototype, the Wild Dagger received a large order of 72 units, of which 70 units were actually manufactured. It was mainly used for counter insurgency warfare against anti-Alliance forces, a job it excelled at due to its psychological impact on enemies.[1]

During Operation Ragnarök, a Wild Dagger, piloted by OMNI Enforcer pilot McFadden, was part of the 2012th Patrol Team, which was in charge of protecting the Nibelung anti-aircraft cannon from discovery. When ZAFT's Underwater Invasion Team (UIT) 6th Squad arrived to perform reconnaissance on the Nibelung, the Wild Dagger remained on standby while the rest of the 2012th, which consisted of three GAT-SO2R N Dagger N, stalked the team with their Mirage Colloid Stealth System active. However, the UIT 6th Squad had a Mirage Colloid detector, and they lured the 2012th into a trap.[2]

At this point, 2012th team leader Stephen Wilshere signaled for McFadden to attack. McFadden's Wild Dagger quickly destroyed a ZGMF-1000/A1 Gunner ZAKU Warrior and a ZGM-1000/R4 Command ZAKU CCI before the latter could relay the information back to ZAFT forces in orbit. As a result, the Nibelung was able to devastate ZAFT landing forces when they attempted to launch an assault from orbit. However, the 2012th was wiped out by Shinn Asuka in the ZGMF-X42S Destiny Gundam in the subsequent battle.[2]

Notes & Trivia[]

  • The Destiny MSV profile for the Wild Dagger stated that it was based on the "GAT-01 Dagger". This was likely an error, as GAT-01 was the model number of the Strike Dagger, and the colored artwork page specifically stated that the Wild Dagger was based on the Dagger L.
