The GN-006 Cherudim Gundam (aka Cherudim Gundam, Cherudim) is the successor to GN-002 Gundam Dynames introduced in season two of Mobile Suit Gundam 00, and is piloted by Lockon Stratos.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

One of the new Gundams deployed by Celestial Being in AD 2312, the Cherudim Gundam was developed as the successor to the GN-002 Gundam Dynames and specialized in long-range shooting.[1][2][3][4] The Cherudim's attack power, shooting accuracy, and other basic performances had been enhanced compared to its predecessor.[3][4][5][6] Features inherited from the Dynames included a Sniper Mode for long-range shooting, a rifle-shaped shooting scope in the cockpit, and the use of an AI-equipped robot, Haro, to assist Lockon Stratos in operating the mobile suit.[1][3][6][7] Like the Dynames, the Cherudim's armament included weapons to handle combat in other ranges besides long-range, however major changes were made to its melee combat and defensive armament.[3][4][8][9] The Cherudim was also able to use its Trans-Am System more effectively for shooting, and would not suffer as much from the system's drawbacks.[4][10][11][12]

The Cherudim's basic design focused on 'Precision Shooting', with special attention paid to the mobile suit's body layout so as to protect its sensor functions.[4][10][12] A precision shooting-use head sensor unit was built into the forehead, and to protect this sensor, a crystalline cover was fitted over it.[4][12] As with the Dynames, the Cherudim controls GN Particles through a pair of clavicle antennas, but these antennas were moved from the top of the torso to the left side of Cherudim's head, behind the head sensor unit, to avoid interference with the sensor.[4][7][8][13] GN Particles could interfere with radar and radio waves, but when deployed around a mobile suit at a high concentration, they could also affect the machine's precision shooting, so dispersal of these particles might be halted during precision shooting.[4][12] Overhanging armor were added to the Cherudim's chest to protect its chest vents, and they also served to insulate the surrounding of the mobile suit's sensors from the heat and particles emitted by these vents.[4][12]

Unlike most mobile suits, the Cherudim's feet were designed for stability during shooting, rather than for walking.[4][12] This design was because the Gundams were capable of flight due to the use of GN Particles.[4] Furthermore, the heel parts of Cherudim's feet could tilt downward and be used with the retractable claws in the soles to anchor the Gundam to the ground, improving the mobile suit's stability when shooting.[4][7][8][12] Another unique characteristic of the Cherudim was the location of its GN Drive; instead of being housed in the chest like the third generation Gundams, such as the Dynames, the Cherudim's GN Drive was installed behind its waist.[4][7][8][14] This was done in consideration of the subtle effect on space caused by the topological defect within the GN Drive.[4][12] This location also enabled more efficient supply of GN Particles to the wireless, remote-controlled weapons known as GN Shield Bits.[4][12]

The Cherudim was equipped with nine GN Shield Bits as its primary defensive armament.[3][4][7][15] Capable of defending against attacks from any directions, these GN Shield Bits could also combine to form large shields, and were used to protect Cherudim's allies as well.[4][14][15][16] Furthermore, they were equipped with built-in beam guns for offense, making them multi-purpose equipment.[4][10][15][16] In terms of melee combat, all melee combat weaponry were omitted from Cherudim following an analysis of Dynames's operating data, and instead, the pair of close-range use GN Beam Pistol IIs were designed to parry enemy's GN Beam Saber.[3][4][5][17] A long-range rifle called the GN Sniper Rifle II served as Cherudim's primary weapon, it featured improved accuracy and could be operated while in a folded state, making it easy to wield in medium and close-range combat.[3][4][14][17] Lastly, four GN Missile Pods were built into Cherudim's front waist armor, enabling it to fire up to eight GN Missiles.[5][7][18][19]

When required, the Cherudim could activate Trans-Am System to enhance its thrust and defensive capabilities, as well as increase its output by three-fold for a limited time.[10][15][16][20] This system also enabled the Cherudim to use the Holoscreen for ultra-precision shooting.[3][4][10][14] Cherudim and the other new Gundams deployed by Celestial Being in AD 2312 were designed with the use of Trans-Am System in mind, as such, the deterioration in performance after using the system would not be as severe as their predecessors'.[3][4][10][12] The Cherudim was later upgraded into the GN-006GNHW/R Cherudim Gundam GNHW/R for the final battle with the A-Laws and the Innovators.[5][7][21][22] There was also an alternate configuration of the Cherudim known as the GN-006/SA Cherudim Gundam SAGA that was designed for base infiltration mission.[19][23][24] After the final battle with A-Laws and the Innovators, the heavily damaged Cherudim was rebuilt as the Cherudim Gundam SAGA and assigned to the support team, Fereshte.[24][25][26]

Armaments[]

  • GN Sniper Rifle II
A custom beam rifle for long-range precision shooting, the GN Sniper Rifle II served as Cherudim's main weapon.[1][3][4][5] It was developed from the GN-002 Gundam Dynames's GN Sniper Rifle, and featured improved basic performance.[4][6][9][14] In particular, its accuracy was enhanced due to the installation of the crystal sensor at the top of the rifle.[3][4][6] This sensor was newly developed by the Celestial Being and could also be found on the weapons of Cherudim's fellow Gundams.[3][4][12][27] When the Trans-Am System is activated, not only is the rifle's firepower enhanced, its firing range is also extended, enabling it to shoot further than the GNZ-003 Gadessa's GN Mega Launcher.[12][28]
By folding its barrel, the rifle could change from Rifle Mode to Triple Vulcan Mode (also known simply as 'Vulcan Mode') for use in close to medium-range combat.[2][4][10][14] The Triple Vulcan Mode was easier to wield and effective at handling multiple enemies at close-range.[4][10][14] The Triple Vulcan Mode could rapid fire beams from three muzzles, as suggested by its name, and had sufficient power to destroy enemy mobile suit.[2][17][29][30] When not in use, the GN Sniper Rifle could be mounted on the Cherudim's right shoulder in its Triple Vulcan Mode form.[4][7][14][31]
  • GN Beam Pistol II
A beam firearm for close-range shooting, the Cherudim carried a pair of them, one on each side of its backpack.[4][5][14][31] Despite having low firepower due to their small size, the GN Beam Pistol IIs were shown to be capable of destroying enemy mobile suit in certain situations.[4][14][32][33] They were also easy to handle and had excellent rapid-fire performance.[4][6][7][14] Furthermore, the bottom section of each pistol's barrel was coated with a beam resistant coating, enabling the pistols to block/parry enemy's GN Beam Saber, as well as physical blade, such as the GNZ-007 Gaddess's GN Heat Saber and GNW-20000 Arche Gundam's GN Buster Sword.[4][16][17][34] Since the Cherudim was not equipped with any blades, it utilized these pistols for melee combat as well.[10][14][16][34] Interestingly, the previous Lockon Stratos, pilot of the Dynames, once suggested to Ian Vashti the development of a gun that could parry blades in melee combat.[35]
  • GN Shield Bit
Wireless, remote-controlled weaponry equivalent to the GN Fangs used by the GNW-002 Gundam Throne Zwei, the GN Shield Bits deploy a GN Field on their surface to achieve high defensive capabilities.[4][7][36][37] The Cherudim was equipped with nine GN Shield Bits, also known simply as 'Shield Bits', and they were controlled by the AI-equipped robot, Haro.[4][6][7][15] The Shield Bits could function as individual shields, or combine with each other to form large shields of various shapes and sizes.[4][6][15][16] Capable of defending a wide area and against attacks from any directions, the Shield Bits were also used to protect Cherudim's fellow Gundams and their mothership, the CBS-74 Ptolemaios 2.[4][15][21][36] Overall, the Shield Bits' defensive capabilities were superior to the Dynames' GN Full Shield.[4] Due to their defensive nature, the Shield Bits were primarily deployed within a short distance from the Cherudim.[36]
While focusing on defense, the Shield Bits also have offensive power as they were installed with a beam gun each, with a muzzle located in one end for firing beams.[4][15][16][22] When required, the Shield Bits could change to 'Assault Mode', an attack specialized form where four bits gathered in a square formation with their muzzles pointing forward, and jointly fires a large, powerful beam.[5][16][30][32] When not in use, two of the Shield Bits were mounted on the left shoulder, another two mounted on the knees, while the remaining five were mounted around the rear waist-mounted GN Drive, protecting the drive itself.[6][7][14][15] Normally, the Shield Bits on the shoulder and knees were charged with GN Particles from the Cherudim's main body, but during battle, these bits could dock to the GN Drive for urgent, rapid charging of particles.[4][12]
  • GN Missile Pod
The Cherudim was equipped with four GN Missile Pods, one in each of the front waist armor's green-colored, rectangular blocks.[5][7][18][19] Each GN Missile Pod carried two GN Missiles, and when used, the front waist armor segment flipped open for launching these missiles.[5][7][16][18] Besides firing all eight GN Missiles at once, it was also possible to only fire GN Missiles from selected GN Missile Pods.[16][18] The Cherudim's GN Missiles resembled those of the Dynames, and presumably functioned in the same manner, whereby the missiles' covers extend outward after hitting their targets, releasing compressed GN Particles to damage or even destroy the enemies from the inside.[5][9][13][16] These GN Missiles were also used for interception as well as to restrict enemy movements.[7][12]

Special Equipment & Features[]

  • Sniper Mode
Like its predecessor, the GN-002 Gundam Dynames, the Cherudim has an alternate Sniper Mode for precision, long-range shooting.[4][7][12][38] To switch to Sniper Mode, the red crystalline cover on the Cherudim's forehead lifts up to expose the built-in head sensor unit designed for precision shooting.[1][3][4][7] The crystalline cover served to protect the sensor, which is an ultra-precision device that may lose its function even when slightly damaged.[4][12] The Sniper Mode was often used together with a rifle-shaped shooting scope in the cockpit.[1][6][7][8] This shooting scope enabled the Cherudim's pilot to perform the act of "shooting" in the cockpit, and it essentially functioned as a controller for the GN Sniper Rifle II's Rifle Mode.[1][4][14][18] This was another feature inherited from the Dynames, but the Cherudim's shooting scope was smaller and closer in shape to a real gun.[4][6][7][8] The shooting scope was mounted in the cockpit's ceiling, it lowers down when in use and retracts when not needed.[7][8][30][28]
A special system that when activated would fully release all of the compressed high-density GN Particles accumulated in the Gundam, enhancing its mobility and defensive capabilities as well as allowing it to perform at three times its normal output for a limited time.[10][20][39][40] Additionally, the entire Gundam appeared red and afterimages were generated when moving.[10][15][16][20] Like Dynames, Cherudim was also able to use the Trans-Am System to enhance its shooting accuracy, and this ability was refined into a precision shooting system known as Holoscreen.[10][11] Unfortunately, the Trans-Am System is a double-edged sword, as once it ended, the Gundam's performance would drop as all its GN Particles were used up.[10][20][39][41] This negative effect would last until the stored GN Particles within the Gundam returned to normal level.[20][41] The Cherudim and its fellow new Gundams deployed by the Celestial Being in AD 2312 were all designed on the premise of using the Trans-Am System actively, thus, although a certain drop in performance remained unavoidable, the deterioration would not be that severe until they could not battle.[3][4][10][42] Furthermore, these Gundams could deactivate the Trans-Am System at any time, unlike their predecessors, where the system continued running until all the GN Particles were depleted.[42][43]
  • Holoscreen
A precision shooting system housed in the backpack, the Holoscreen was deployed in front of the Cherudim's head when the Gundam was shooting in Sniper Mode during Trans-Am.[4][7][10][15] The Holoscreen uses the increased amount of GN Particles during Trans-Am to search for enemies, perform high probability event predictions using accurate data, and computed at high-speed all the information necessary for shooting before transmitting them to the pilot.[4][8][10][14] As a result, the Holoscreen enabled ultra-precision shooting during Trans-Am.[3][4][6][8]
Haro is the name of small versatile robots with individual AIs that Celestial Being uses for support and maintenance of their ships and mobile suits.[9][44][45] One orange-colored Haro was placed on a circular dock on the right side of the Cherudim's cockpit to assist Lockon Stratos in operating the Gundam.[1][7][14][46] This is the same Haro that partnered the previous Lockon.[1][47] Besides controlling the GN Shield Bits, the Haro also assisted with the fire control system, notifying Lockon of approaching enemies, monitor the recharging of GN Particles after using the Trans-Am System, etc.[4][7][28][48]
A system for controlling a mobile weapon's remote-controlled weaponry. Although the Cherudim's GN Shield Bits were controlled by Haro,[4][6][7][12] the AI-equipped robot would often deploy these remote-controlled weapons and/or switch them to Assault Mode only when instructed by Lockon.[15][16][18][32]
