The GN-009 Seraphim Gundam (aka Seraphim Gundam, Seraphim) is the successor to GN-004 Gundam Nadleeh introduced in Mobile Suit Gundam 00 season two. It was piloted by Tieria Erde.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

Developed from the GN-004 Gundam Nadleeh, the GN-009 Seraphim Gundam is usually hidden on the GN-008 Seravee Gundam as a backpack unit.[1][2][3][4] Seraphim detaches from Seravee's back and changes from its Backpack Form to its MS Form only when necessary, and this can be done even when battling.[4][5][6][7] Like Nadleeh, Seraphim is equipped with the "Trial System" as its main feature.[1][4][8][9] This system deploys an invisible field around the mobile suit, enabling Seraphim's pilot Tieria Erde to take control of machines within the field that are linked with the quantum processing system Veda.[4][9][10][11]

Seraphim's Trial System is an improved version of Nadleeh's and has a much wider range.[9][12][13][14] However, the system still requires its user to be linked with Veda.[1][3][10][12] Tieria, who lost his link with Veda in AD 2308, was hence unable to use the system until his link was restored in AD 2312.[2][3][10][13] A huge Gundam face hidden on Seraphim's chest is exposed when the Trial System is activated, and this is the same huge face that appears when Seravee is in "Face Burst Mode".[2][4][10][15] Unlike Nadleeh which was intended to be used only in an emergency, Seraphim was developed with regular combat in mind.[9][16] Although Seraphim is more powerful than Nadleeh, its combat capabilities were still deemed inferior to its fellow Gundams in AD 2312.[4][9]

Since Seraphim normally functions as Seravee's backpack, it is slightly smaller and slimmer than its fellow new Gundams deployed in AD 2312.[9] To transform into Backpack Form, Seraphim's legs are folded to form the two large thrusters at the bottom of the backpack, its arms rotate to the top and change into a pair of GN Cannons, and its head retracts into its chest.[4][7][9][17] Seraphim's head is also smaller than its fellow Gundams to match its body size, and has a simple structure to facilitate its storage during Backpack Form.[9][17] The cockpit is located in the abdomen, with the cockpit hatch concealed by the red-colored part at the top of the chest.[3][4][18]

Both Seraphim and Seravee were developed for Tieria, and when the two mobile suits separate, he and his pilot seat move from Seravee's cockpit to Seraphim's cockpit.[1][3][4][19] Seravee then turns into an unmanned attack unit remotely controlled by Tieria in Seraphim, and these two mobile suits can be used together to defeat a tough foe, like the GNZ-005 Garazzo.[3][4][5][9] Since the GN Drive that powers Seravee is installed on the back of the Seraphim, a Seraphim-less Seravee can only operate independently for a certain period of time using its large GN Condensers.[1][3][4][17] When the two mobile suit docks again, the GN Drive in Seraphim is capable of recharging Seravee's large GN Condensers.[4]

The Seraphim's arms not only can transform into GN Cannons, they also store a pair of GN Beam Sabers for melee combat, and both weapons are usable in Backpack Form and MS Form.[2][4][5][6] The GN Beam Sabers can be wielded in both forms as Seraphim's hands were designed to operate in both forms, with each hand having two thumbs, one on each side.[3][5][9][13] However, only one thumb on each hand is active at any moment, with the unused thumb folded vertically against the palm.[3][5][6][9] For handheld firearm, Seraphim can use a GN Beam Machine Gun or Seravee's GN Bazooka IIs.[2][3][20][21] Like its fellow Gundams, Seraphim can activate Trans-Am System to enhance its thrust and defensive capabilities, as well as triple its output for a limited time.[5][7][9][22]

A more powerful version of Seraphim, the GN-009GNHW/B Seraphim Gundam GNHW/B, could be created by using some of the upgrade parts from the GN-008GNHW/B Seravee Gundam GNHW/B.[4][9][20][23] There was also a plan to expand the Trial System's range using the GN-008GNHW/3G Seravee Gundam GNHW/3G, which is equipped with the Seraphim and two unmanned Seraphim units called GN-00902 SEMs.[4][21][24][25] However, this plan was dropped due to various issues.[4][21][24][25]

Armaments[]

  • GN Cannon
Both arms of the Seraphim can transform into large beam cannons, with the hands folding into the barrel.[2][3][5][9] The crystal part on the back of each hand then forms the cannon's muzzle and is where the weapon's particle beams are fired from.[2][5] The pair of GN Cannons can function in both MS and Backpack Forms.[2][4][5][7] A combine attack from both GN Cannons was used to destroy the GNZ-005 Garazzo.[5][9]
  • GN Beam Saber
A high power melee combat weapon that emits a beam blade made of compressed GN Particles when drawn.[2][3][4][6] Seraphim is equipped with two GN Beam Sabers, one stored in each forearm, and they are usable in both MS and Backpack Forms.[2][3][4][6] When used, the GN Beam Sabers slide out to under the hands, allowing them to be grabbed instantly for attacking enemy unit.[6] As Seraphim is a lightweight mobile suit with low GN Particles storage capability, the GN Beam Sabers which consume less particles are easier to use than its other weaponry.[2][3]
  • GN Bazooka II
A pair of handheld beam firearms originally used by the Seravee, they are improved version of GN-005 Gundam Virtue's GN Bazooka.[2][3][4] The two GN Bazooka IIs can combine to form the "Double Bazooka" for higher firepower.[2][3][4][26] Furthermore, the Double Bazooka has a maximum output mode called "Burst Mode", where the barrel splits apart and fires a ball of beam energy instead of a beam shot.[2][4][27][28] While Seraphim can use the pair of GN Bazooka IIs, their firepower are reduced as the mobile suit lacked the large GN Condensers to store the amount of GN Particles required for firing powerful particle beams.[2][3][4]
  • GN Beam Machine Gun
A gun developed for Seraphim which originally had no dedicated portable firearm.[17][20][21][25] This small weapon is stored on one of the Seraphim's legs when the mobile suit is attached to the back of the GN-008 Seravee Gundam.[20] The GN Beam Machine Gun is mainly used for restricting enemy movements as Seraphim is not actively used in combat.[21][25] The plan for the final battle with the Innovators only called for activating the Seraphim's Trial System at the same time as Veda was recaptured, so there was no intention to fight using Seraphim, and because of this, the mobile suit sortied as part of the GN-008GNHW/B Seravee Gundam GNHW/B without the GN Beam Machine Gun.[20]

Special Equipment & Features[]

Like its predecessor, the GN-004 Gundam Nadleeh, Seraphim is equipped with the "Trial System" as its main feature.[1][4][8][9] This system generates an invisible field known as "Trial Field" around the equipped mobile suit, enabling its pilot to take control and forcibly shut down all machines linked with the quantum processing system Veda within this field.[4][9][10][11] Seraphim's Trial System is an improved version of the one used by the Nadleeh, with a wider effective range that was shown to cover the battlefield around the colony-class deep space mothership Celestial Being.[4][9][10][14] It has been suggested that this greatly expanded range was due to the incorporation of technology from the GN-004/te-A02 Gundam Nadleeh Akwos.[14] When the Trial System is used, the huge Gundam face hidden on Seraphim's chest is exposed, and this is the same huge face that appears when GN-008 Seravee Gundam is in "Face Burst Mode".[4][9][10] Additionally, the red-colored forehead part of this huge face would shine briefly when the system is being activated, with its eyes glowing as long as the system is active.[10][15] The Trial System can only be used by a pilot who is linked with Veda.[1][3][10][12] As Seraphim's pilot, Tieria Erde lost his link with Veda during the battle with the UN Forces in AD 2308, he was unable to use the system for most of the conflict with the Innovators in AD 2312.[2][3][4][21] His link with Veda was eventually restored during the final battle with the Innovators, enabling him to remotely operate Seraphim and activate its Trial System.[7][10][13][26]
A special system that when activated would fully release all of the compressed high-density GN Particles accumulated in the Gundam, enhancing its mobility and defensive capabilities as well as allowing it to perform at three times its normal output for a limited time.[7][22][29][30] Additionally, the entire Gundam appeared red and afterimages were generated when moving.[5][7][22] Unfortunately, the Trans-Am System is a double-edged sword, as once it ended, the Gundam's performance would drop as all its GN Particles were used up.[7][22][29][31] The Gundams deployed by the Celestial Being since AD 2312 were designed on the premise of using the Trans-Am System, thus, although a certain drop in performance remained unavoidable, the deterioration would not be that severe until they could not battle.[7][32][33] Furthermore, these Gundams could deactivate the Trans-Am System at any time.[32][34] Since Celestial Being's Trans-Am System still required a GN Drive for activation during AD 2312.,[32][34][35][36] the Seravee could not activate the system without Seraphim attached to its back as it lacked its own GN Drive.[3][4][7] However, once the system is activated, Seraphim can detach from Seravee, and both mobile suits would be in Trans-Am Mode.[5]
