G Project
Talk0this wiki
The G Project is a Mobile Suit development project in the Cosmic Era timeline, initially intended to develop five new-generation mobile suits that would allow the Alliance to eliminate the advantage held by ZAFT's mobile suits.

Mobile Suits
Earth Alliance/OMNI Enforcer suits
Alliance prototype mobile suits developed under the G-Project bore the designation GAT-X(Gressorial Armament Tactical - eXperimental). Later production-model mobile suits retained the GAT- designation, such as the GAT-01 Strike Dagger. They are occasionally heard referred to as "G-Weapons"
In Heliopolis
The first set of "G-Weapons" were jointly developed by the Alliance and Orb's Morgenroete, Inc. at the Orb-held c colony Heliopolis. Of these five, four were captured by ZAFT.
Atlantic Federation
The second set of mobile suits developed under the G-Project was developed solely by the Atlantic Federation.
Orb Union suits
At the same time as they were assisting the Alliance, Morgenroete secretly diverted many of the technologies provided by the Alliance into the creation of their own mobile suits, the MBF-P (Main Battle Figure - Prototype) "Astray" series. Eventually, these led to the development of the mass-produced MBF-M1 Astray.

- MBF-P03 Astray Blue Frame
- MBF-P04 Astray Green Frame

Ships
Two vessels were developed in conjunction with the G-Project mobile suits: A battleship designed to carry them, the Archangel; and a tender designed to supply and support the ship and mobile suit. The Archangel was heavily based on Morgenroete's Izumo-class battleship. A total of two Archangel-class ships were built; The exact number of Cornelius-class tenders built is not known, but at least three and perhaps up to five were built.
Technology
As part of the project, several new technologies were developed to give the new suits an advantage against ZAFT's mainstay ZGMF-1017 GINN mobile suit series. The most important new technology invented was the beam weaponry, which before this project was only used on warships. The G Project however produced beam weapons which were of a size so that they could be used by mobile suits. They were built in form of beam rifles for long range attacks and beam sabers for close combat. For defense, the new Phase Shift armor was invented, which granted the new suits enhanced protection against physical attacks. This was a special advantage since ZAFT mobile suits only used shell firing weapons and swords with physical blades. For different combat situations, the Striker Packs were created, granting the Strike the ability to adapt to different battle situations. Another more unusual technology was the Mirage Colloid technology, which was installed on the Blitz, granting it the ability to cloak itself. Over time, more technologies using Colloid particles were developed.
History
When ZAFT first rolled out their mobile suits, their proved to be a powerful opponent for the Earth Alliance' TS-MA2 Moebius Mobile Armors. As a result, the Atlantic Federation collaborated with the Orb Union's Morgenroete, Inc., with the goal to develop mobile suits that could be piloted by Naturals. First-generation mobile suits were too complex for Naturals to control, and could only be piloted by Coordinators. The G Project began in CE 69 under the aegis of Admiral Lewis Halberton to produce G Weapons and reached fruition in 71. In this year, the first five EA-produced mobile suits were secretly rolled out at the Orb-controlled space colony Heliopolis. These G mobile suits eventually became known collectively as "Gundams," after the acronym for their mobile operating system - General Unilateral Neuro - Link Dispersive Automatic Maneuver. As part of the project, a new series of warships used to carry these new suits and outfitted with enhanced weaponry and technology was created. The result was the Archangel-class assault ship. This ship class was modeled after Orb's Izumo-class battleships.
Before the new suits could be fielded, ZAFT attacked the colony and stole four of the five suits. The technology used in these suits was eventually reverse engineered by both ZAFT and the EA to produce newer and more powerful prototype and mass production mobile suits. The EA suits derived from the G Project suits were all designated GAT-01 with a suffix to indicate which suit they were developed from. "A" or no suffix designates mobile suits derived from the GAT-X105 Strike Gundam, "D" designates mobile suits derived from the GAT-X102 Duel Gundam, and "E" designates mobile suits derived from the GAT-X103 Buster Gundam.
Morgenroete also used the opportunity to produce their own MS series for Orb and thus produced their own prototypes, which were eventually known as Astrays. These Astrays were built before the five EA suits and used to test the technology of them. This allowed Orb to copy the new technology for themselves, among other beam weaponry.
Trivia
- The G Project is the Cosmic Era counterpart to the Universal Century's Operation V, which was a similar project of the Earth Federation.
- Units under the GAT-X100 series, like the GAT-X105 Strike Gundam, GAT-X103 Buster Gundam, and GAT-X131 Calamity Gundam, are designed around being weaponry specialist. Units under the GAT-X200 series, like the GAT-X207 Blitz Gundam, and GAT-X252 Forbidden Gundam are designed around the usage of Mirage Colloid. And units under the GAT-X300 series, like the GAT-X303 Aegis Gundam and GAT-X370 Raider Gundam are designed around being able to transform.
