Gundam Reconguista in G (ガンダム Gのレコンギスタ Gandamu Jī no Rekongisuta?) is a 2014 anime television series created by Yoshiyuki Tomino. It is his first major Gundam project since the 2005-2006 Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: A New Translation film trilogy and debuted in Fall 2014. It is set in the Regild Century, an era set after the Universal Century, and follows the adventures of a pilot trainee named Bellri Zenam in the Capital Guard, an organization protecting a space elevator.

Synopsis[]

The Universal Century, a history marked by space colonization and space warfare, has passed. Humanity's prosperity has ushered in a new era of global peace known as the Regild Century. Bellri Zenam, a pilot training with the Capital Guard, is chosen by the G-Self-a highly maneuverable Mobile Suit of unknown origin, operable only by a select few—to embark on a journey that will change the course of the Regild Century forever.[1]

Plot[]

In Regild Century 1014, 1,014 years after the end of the Universal Century, a young member of the Capital Guard named Bellri Zenam, charged with protecting the orbital elevator Capital Tower, encounters and helps capture a highly advanced mobile suit, the G-Self and its pilot, Aida Surugan, while defending the tower from space pirates called the Pirate Corps. Feeling a connection with both the G-Self and its pilot, Bellri is able to control the mobile suit, operable only by a select few.

The G-Self is recaptured by the Amerian spaceship Megafauna, and Bellri subsequently helps fend off attacks by the Capital Army - a militaristic faction from the Capital Tower advocating for rearmament, led by Colonel Cumpa Rusita - and its eccentric Captain Mask.

The Megafauna returns to the Capital Territory to negotiate a ceasefire and alliance to prepare for an alleged threat from space, but the unexpected launch of an Amerian fleet causes hostilities to resume.

The Megafauna flees to space, arriving at the holy land of Sankt Porto atop the Capital Tower, which has been occupied by Amerian forces seeking control of utilities distributed by the Capital Territory.

Recognizing the growing military strength of Earth's factions, the moon colony of Towasanga sends their Dorette Fleet to begin the "Reconguista", a recolonization of Earth.

In the ensuing chaos, the Megafauna as well as a pair of Amerian and Capital Army ships journey to the moon.

At Towasanga, Bellri and Aida learn that they are the last surviving members of the royal Rayhunton family, sent to earth as children to protect them from the Dorette Fleet. Seeking the truth behind the conflict, Aida commands the Megafauna to the Venus Globe colonies, the source of the Photon Batteries and other advanced technology that has led to Earth's rapid militarization.

After a battle with the G-IT Corps - another faction supporting the Reconguista - they discover Cumpa Rusita is the Towasangan who brought them to Earth and provided Earthnoids with the blueprints for spaceships and mobile suits with the intention of spurring armed conflict and strengthening the human race.

The Megafauna returns to Earth with upgraded mobile suits and finds the war has escalated further. Ameria has allied with the Dorette Fleet while Captain Mask allies with the G-IT Corps to ensure his historically oppressed race has a place in the new world order.

A chaotic final battle ensues at the Guiana Highlands among the remains of the past wars and Cumpa Rusita is killed in the crossfire between Bellri and Captain Mask. Having rediscovered the horrors of war throughout their adventures, the crew of the Megafauna force a ceasefire with technology from the Universal Century.

Some months later, a joint crew of Earthnoids and Spacenoids from multiple nations start a journey around the world to promote peace and understanding.

Bellri disembarks in Japan and climbs Mount Fuji, intending to see the world on his own two feet.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • "Reconguista" comes from the Spanish/Portuguese word "Reconquista" which means "Reconquest". Tomino altered the spelling because he wanted a hard "G" sound. This again alludes to the location of the Capital Territory, South America.[6] Reconquest refers to the 800 year period on the Iberian peninsula. "G" refers to the ground.[7]
  • It wasn't until the 16th episode, that the term "Gundam" was used in dialogue.
  • Gundam Reconguista in G is the first Gundam television series since ∀ Gundam that does not use cold opens.
  • Gundam Reconguista in G was ranked first in Sony Computer Entertainment's initial rankings of anime debuting in Fall 2014.[8]
  • In the January 2015 issue of NewType Magazine, Gundam Reconguista in G was ranked the third best series, tenth most streamed and fourth most watched.[9]
  • When episode 16 was first uploaded by GundamInfo on Friday June 12, 2015, the title of the video was misspelled as "Belri's War". It was corrected on June 18.[10]
  • Even if the series does more reference to the Universal Century as the century preceding the Regild Century, Yoshiyuki Tomino specifies in an interview he intended for Gundam Reconguista in G to take place 500 years after the event of ∀ Gundam and so after the Correct Century timeline.[11] This contradicted official Sunrise Published marketing materials which has depicted it as occurring approximately 1000 years after the end of the Universal Century[12] (the Universal Century calendar itself ending an unspecified number of years after the ending of Victory Gundam). Sunrise Producer Ogata Naohiro stated that they wanted to "sort out" the issue and it was possible for Tomino's statements to "suddenly become true" one day[13], but there have been no official changes to the chronology or settings of the series since that interview. If Tomino's statements are the true official history, the Regild Century and Correct Century Calendars would then concurrently overlap by at least 500 years.
  • Gundam Reconguista in G is currently the only non-Build series in which Gundam is the first word in the title.
  • Gundam Reconguista in G is the most recent Gundam series and the first since ∀ Gundam to not have received an English dub.
  • Beginning of Gundam Reconguista in G is a 91 minutes documentary about the pre-production of Gundam Reconguista in G. Containing interviews with the cast, production team and other anime related personalities like Harutoshi Fukui.
  • Gundam Reconguista in G was the shortest Gundam series outside of the Build franchise and the series re-cuts of Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn and Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, until Mobile Suit Gundam the Witch from Mercury's 24 episodes run concluded in 2023.
