The Hashmal (ハシュマル Hashumaru?) is an unmanned mobile armor introduced in the second season of the TV anime Mobile Suit Gundam IRON-BLOODED ORPHANS.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

The Hashmal is one of the countless model of mobile armors that took the lives of a quarter of the world's population during the Calamity War.[1] Originating from Artificial Intelligence (AI)-equipped self-sustaining weapon developed before the war, mobile armors are independent, unmanned weapons controlled by their own, self-evolution AI[1][2].[3] Meant for slaughtering humans, they will move towards areas with high human populations for that purpose[1][4]. Like the mobile suits that were developed to counter them, mobile armors use Ahab Reactors as their main power source, have a frame made of high hardness rare alloy, and are covered with Nanolaminate Armor, making them difficult to destroy.[1][3]

Designed for ground use, the Hashmal's limbs are actually arms and can be stored in the shoulders.[3][5] Despite being larger than a mobile suit, it is much more agile, appearing similar to a bird of prey during attacks.[5] It is armed with a head-mounted beam weapon, a superhard wire blade attached to the back of its head, and a pair of claw-mounted kinetic energy shot launchers.[1][3] It is usually accompanied by multiple small, unmanned units known as Pluma.[4] Plumas are produced by the Hashmal itself (there is a theory that a plant-like production unit is necessary), and they operate based on its orders.[1][3] Besides serving as attack units, Plumas can also repair the Hashmal and play various support roles.[1][4] The Hashmal's core control unit is exposed on the underside of the head, but landing a direct hit is difficult due to the nanolaminate armor on the rest of the machine and because of the Plumas protecting the mobile armor.[3]

Armaments[]

  • Beam Weapon
Essentially a beam cannon, it is mounted in the head which will open up when the weapon is in use.[4][6] This optical based weaponry releases a beam with high destructive power and long effective range, but could not be fired instantly.[5][6] It is not used in battles against mobile suits or other mobile armors, as nanolaminate armor is capable of diffusing beam weapons and minimizing their damage.[1][5] Instead, beam weapons are used by mobile armors for attacking humans.[1]
  • Kinetic Energy Shot Launcher
Mounted in each claw, the launcher fires projectiles that are essentially rocket-powered spears.[1][3] Thanks to their high thrust propulsion system, these projectiles are capable of penetrating the enemy's armor.[3][5]
  • Superhard Wire Blade
A blade with high hardness attached to a wire made of a special alloy, it is mounted at the back of the head and cannot be reproduced with current Post Disaster-era technology.[1][3] At room temperature, the wire's special alloy is viscous and can bend flexibly when charged with a trace amount of electrical current.[1][3] The weapon can move easily in any direction and can be used to launch surprise attacks from blind spots.[5]

Special Equipment & Features[]

Small, unmanned subunits produced by mobile armors such as Hashmal (there is a theory that a plant-like production unit is necessary), and they operate based on the mobile armor's orders.[1][3] Besides serving as attack units, Plumas can also repair the Hashmal and play various support roles, such as data collection and gathering resources to resupply the mobile armor.[1][4] Hashmal can use these resources to manufacture new Plumas.[3][4] Hashmal is also equipped with an energy supply system that acts as the power source for the Plumas.[1]
  • Energy Supply System
Built into the shoulders and located behind the large red panels, the system supplies power to the Plumas via microwaves.[1] Although the system is not directly related to combat, it is proof that mobile armor is an autonomous unmanned weapon, and hence an important function.[5]

History[]

It is unclear when the Hashmal was developed during the Calamity War, but it is certain that the mobile armor was trapped and buried in a large field of half-metal on Mars alongside its Plumas, and the ASW-G-64 Gundam Flauros in the late stages of the war. Unable to detect Ahab Waves due to the half-metal, it entered a state of dormancy.[5] However, the half-metal also made it impossible for Hashmal's foes to detect it, as such it became one of the few mobile armors to survive the Calamity War.

In P.D. 325, Tekkadan uncovered the Hashmal while excavating the half-metal. Gjallarhorn's McGillis Fareed quickly assembled a group to investigate upon being informed of the discovery. He then explained the mobile armor's history and abilities to his Tekkadan entourage as they traveled to the site. While observing the half-buried Hashmal, they were suddenly confronted by a mobile suit squadron led by Gjallarhorn's Iok Kujan, who accused McGillis of plotting to earn an Order of the Seven Stars by destroying the mobile armor. Despite McGillis's warnings, Iok accidentally awakened the Hashmal when his customized EB-08s Reginlaze moved too close to the pit, allowing the mobile armor to sense the mobile suit's Ahab Waves.[5] After breaking free of the half-metal by firing its beam weapon, Hashmal deployed a swarm of Plumas and annihilated Iok's squad. Tekkadan took the opportunity to flee and prepare a counterattack; on the other hand, Iok narrowly escaped with a badly damaged Reginlaze thanks to the sacrifices of his men.

With all immediate threats to itself removed, the Hashmal directed its Plumas to forage for fuel and materials to sustain its operation. Afterward, it sets its sights on Chryse to resume its destruction of humanity. Tekkadan tried to ambush it in a canyon, but a failed attack by the vengeful Iok redirected the mobile armor towards an agricultural center. Ride Mass used his STH-16 Shiden as a shield against the Hashmal's beam weapon, but the beam diffused against the mobile suit's nanolaminate armor, resulting in heavy damage to the agricultural center and civilian casualties. Ride was then overwhelmed by the Plumas' sheer numbers, but was saved by the arrival of Mikazuki Augus in his ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos Lupus. Later, after disengaging the safety limiter on the Barbatos Lupus' Alaya-Vijnana system, Mikazuki defeated the Hashmal by destroying its core control unit, incurring significant damage to the Gundam and himself in the process. Following its destruction, the Hashmal's tail parts were salvaged and transplanted onto the ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex, Gundam Barbatos Lupus' upgraded form.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • Hashmal appears to be named after the Hashmallim (or "Glowing Ones"/"Amber Ones"), one of the ten classes of angels in Judaism. As a result, following with the themes set by the Gundam and Valkyrja lines, it is theorized there are ten mobile armor classes (or at least ten mobile armor units) in the Post Disaster timeline.
  • As the Hashmal received the fatal blow from Gundam Barbatos Lupus, the symbol on the Gundam Barbatos's torso, knees and shoulders (Form 4 onwards), Gundam Bael's shoulders and on Gundam Marchosias' skirt and weapons (except the shield and railguns) can be seen on the underside of the mobile armor's head. It is unclear what the symbol represents and why it is on the Gundams and Hashmal.
  • Although it's never officially stated what the Hashmal's beam weapon actually is, page 15 in the Iron Blooded Orphans Mechanical Works book shows an initial design of the Hashmal with its beam weapon labeled as a "laser cannon" (レーザー砲).
  • Concept-wise, Hashmal bears several resemblances to Sid from Mobile Suit Gundam AGE. Both are huge, dangerous automated weapons from a previous era of devastating war, and possess dangerous beam weaponry not used by modern mobile weapons.
