Disambiguation:

Joseph Eschonbach (ジョセフ・エッシェンバッハ?) was a character from the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin manga.

History[]

Eschonbach was the mayor of Los Angeles and a former United States presidential candidate. When the Principality of Zeon forces led by Garma Zabi occupied Los Angeles, Eschonbach apparently cooperated with him. Secretly, however, he harbored a strong hatred of Zeon and supported anti-Zeon guerillas. Though Garma knew about his involvement with the guerillas, he still sought to control him, believing that he alone could unite the people and that he would have no choice but to submit once the guerillas were crushed. Ironically, Eschonbach's daughter Icelina fell in love with Garma, much to Eschonbach's anger. He stated that he would never allow his daughter to marry a man from the Zabi family.

One night, Eschonbach organized a party at the city hall that attracted all important individuals in the city, including Garma and Char Aznable. Secretly, he contacted the White Base and the guerillas, asking them to launch a coordinated attack to capture the VIPs and the city hall. As the attacks began, Garma and Char received reports of White Base sightings and headed for battle. Icelina tried to chase after Garma, but Eschonbach ordered his men to restrain her. When Icelina said Eschonbach knew nothing about Garma, Eschonbach slapped her, saying that he would never hand over an Eschonbach to Zeon before asking his men to take her back home and not to let her leave.

Later that night, Garma died in battle against the White Base due to Char's betrayal. However, the guerillas attacking the city hall were slaughtered by Zeon's mobile suits. The next morning, at the mayor's residence, Eschonbach learned the result of the battle. Though disappointed, he was relieved that at least some results were achieved. He then informed his daughter of Garma's death, causing her to faint. Immediately after, Zeon agents entered his residence and attempted to arrest him for inciting insurrection. Eschonbach tried to withdraw a pistol from his desk, but was immediately shot dead by the Zeon agents.
