Kudelia Aina Bernstein (クーデリア・藍那・バーンスタイン Kūderia Aina Bānsutain?) is a character that appears in the Mobile Suit Gundam IRON-BLOODED ORPHANS television series.

Personality & Character[]

Kudelia is a strong willed, courageous woman who is willing to risk her life to fight for her ideals and protect those precious to her. She has a great love for Mars and its people, causing her to start Mar's bid for independence from Earth. Her sheltered life gave her a somewhat naive perspective about the suffering of the Martian people. It was only after travelling with Tekkadan did she develop a greater worldly understanding of the problems Martians suffered. Throughout her time with Tekkadan, she develops close bonds with the group, especially Mikazuki and Atra. She is very loyal to those who earn her trust, never doubting them and standing by their side.

She is a pacifist by nature and aspires to be a symbol of hope for the people of Mars. While she always look for the best solution with the least bloodshed, she is willing to stain her hands with blood to reach her goals. Kudelia also expresses her intention to fight in a Mobile Suit to help her friends, but was stopped when Orga Itsuka informed her of the danger of the Alaya-Vijnana System surgery.

Appearance[]

Kudelia is seen in many outfits throughout the series. Her main outfit is a long red Victorian style dress with a dark grey neck ribbon and brown high boots. When going out or attending meetings for formal occasions she wears a business suit which is a dark navy blazer, white shirt and red tie. She also wears dark navy shorts with high knee socks possibly due to being in Space so if she were to wear a skirt they wont float upwards.

Sometimes when busy in the base and helping others she wears a white shirt with a pair of army fatigues.

Skills & Abilities[]

She has an excellent academic record, majoring in history and economics. Befitting her title as "The Maiden of Revolution", Kudelia has proven to be a very charismatic orator, capable of pacifying an entire Gjallarhorn fleet through her words alone, a feat that Mikazuki describes as "amazing".

Due to her comfortable upbringing, Kudelia had little to no skills in cooking or other house chores, relying on Fumitan to help her. She improves as she learns how to cook during her time with Tekkadan.

History[]

P.D. 323[]

Kudelia Aina Bernstein is the daughter of Norman Bernstein who represents Mars' Chryse Autonomous Region. Her mother is Norman's second wife, Tomomi Bernstein. She was also assigned Fumitan, a maid, who she looked up to. Fumitan taught her about the slums and the situation of Mars, and upon Kudelia's insistence she went to visit in person. She was seperated rom Fumitan and began to cry in fear. She was upset at her own lack of power. She also received a paper book at some point which contained a story about revolution, which she showed to Fumitan.

In her second year, she visited Noachis as a representative of Chryse College and made a speech calling for cooperation between the various regions seeking independence. After this Naochis July Assembly, the independence movements were stirred up and she gained many followers among them. Chryse Guard Security, a private security company, was hired to escort her to Earth. This job was continued after Orga and his comrades took over the company and reformed it into Tekkadan.

Kudelia travelled aboard the Isaribi along with Tekkadan on the way to Earth. It soon became apparent that Tekkadan needed to ally with Teiwaz in order to reach Earth, and an encounter with Naaze Turbine provided the crew an opportunity to meet with McMurdo Barriston. They came to an agreement, though Kudelia was unaware that McMurdo was simply using her to make money.

The crew then travels to the Dort colony to drop off a delivery from Teiwaz, but they soon learnt that the delivery consisted of weaponry for the workers to start a protest. Kudelia was unaware that Nobliss Gordon, who had been financially supporting her the whole time, orchestrated the whole thing - the protest would escalate into a riot and all the protesters would be massacred by Gjallarhorn. Kudelia had gone for shopping as things escalated and Biscuit and Atra were captured. Mikazuki went to go looking for them but she was confronted by Montag, who told her that Fumitan was working against her. She didn't believe him but Fumitan confirmed his words and left. Kudelia ran after her, but while looking for Fumitan she encountered the protesters who celebrated her arrival. She tried to break away but after an explosion that was set up by Gjallarhorn themselves, they accused the protesters of terrorism and began to massacre them. A nearby camera crew saw her cradling the body of a deceased protester and televised the whole thing. Nobliss had sent a pair of assasins to take Kudelia out, but Fumitan protected her at the risk of her own life. Fumitan likened her to the maiden of revolution before dying. Although Kudelia was in denial and refused to leave Fumitan's dead body, she soon snapped out of it and resolved to fight for the workers rights. Aboard the Isaribi, she contacted Nobliss and made him help her with her speech. This speech was televised throughout the galaxy and Gjallarhorn were forced to stop their attack, allowing Isaribi and the Tekkadan to pass safely.

The crew soon speak with Montag, who offers his help. Kudelia reluctantly agrees. They then arrive on Earth and were taken into the protection of Togonosuke Makanai. She and Orga agreed to help him take back his position as prime minister and helped him reach the election. After a tumultuous journey, they reached the election on time and Togonosuke allowed her to make a speech.

P.D. 325[]

Kudelia now leads the Admoss Company which was made to mine half metals. She is approached by Allium Gyojan who seeks to leech off her fame, but she rejects him. This angers him and he hires the Dawn Horizon Corps to assassinate her. They attack her while she's with the Tekkadan, but they ultimately lose. Allium and his men are killed soon after, and when she hears about this, Kudelia expresses her regret at making the Tekkadan bloody their hands again.

While on Mars, Kudelia is often seen playing with the orphans on Sakura's farm or tending to Mikazuki's own farm. She continues to be involved in meetings and still received finance from Nobliss, though reluctant to do so. She leaves to visit Togonosuke after he is injured in an assassination attempt.

She is mostly absent during the struggles within Teiwaz, and is upset that Tekkadan cut off their link with the Admoss Company after resolving to fight against the Arianrhod Fleet. She goes to meet them when they return to Earth and reunites with Mikazuki and the others. She hears that Mikazuki and Atra copulated and agrees with Mikazuki to look after their baby if anything happens to him. After the base is surrounded by Gjallarhorn, she leaves in a car along with Orga, Ride, Chad and Atra while McGillis acts as a decoy. She contacts Toganosuke in an attempt to have him tamper with Tekkadan's personal information so that they can continue to live on after Tekkadan is 'wiped out' and he agrees, but tells them they will have to reach Earth first. She received messages from Azee and Eco, who contacted her because they were unable to reach Tekkadan. Happy that they had a path in front of them, everyone began to celebrate, but Orga was shot while protecting Ride from gunshots after they left the building. Kudelia and Atra went outside and found Orga in his final moments, watching tearfully as he perished.

Epilogue[]

After Rustal gained leadership of Gjallarhorn, he reduced Earth's influence on Mars and the people were able to form their own Martian Union. Kudelia was elected to be the chairwoman due to her popularity and she worked with Rustal to abolish human debris. She was also revealed to have employed many of the former Tekkadan members into her Admoss Company, including Eugene, Chad, Dante, Derma & Dexter).

When Kudelia met Rustal after signing the agreement to end human debris, she slighted him by talking about how she was motivated by her family who were now gone. She then visited Toganosuke's grave with Eugene before returning to Mars. At her office, she talked with her Eugene and Chad and asked them to keep looking for the missing Ride Mass. She then went home to her house on the farm, where she lives with Atra and Akatsuki.

Relationships[]

Mikazuki Augus[]

Kudelia seems to have taken a liking to Mikazuki, frequently coming to him for advice. Mikazuki initially views Kudelia as very naive and patronizing towards the child soldiers at CGS and refuses to shake her hand at their first meeting. This changes when she offers to provide funds to solve the group's financial problem after the coup d'etat by the Third Group. He starts to warm up to her and explains to her things like the Human Debris and the situation of selling crops on Mars. After the funeral held following the battle with the Brewers and listening to Naze talk about women, Mikazuki kissed Kudelia, causing her to become very flustered while he did not think too much of it. His respect for her grows when she pacifies a hostile Gjallarhorn fleet mid-battle with words alone, something he admits to her not even Orga can do. During his battle against Ein in Edmonton, he becomes furious when Ein exclaims that he will kill Kudelia along with the rest of Tekkadan for all of their "sins". It is later shown that during his breaks from duty, he and Atra visit Kudelia at her office, and that he has her handle his paychecks. After Mikazuki and Atra made the decision to conceive a child, Mikazuki asked Kudelia to help Atra look after their child in the event that he were rendered unable to do so. Kudelia was initially heartbroken upon hearing the news, not fully realizing until a moment later that Atra wished for a polygamous romantic relationship between herself, Kudelia, and Mikazuki, an idea she concocted after seeing how comfortable and happy the women of the Hammerhead's crew were while sharing the affections of and for Naze Turbine. Kudelia laughed at the how strange their situation was, but fully accepted the love triangle between them, and agreed to their individual requests. After Mikazuki was killed in the final battle, Kudelia made good on her promise to Mikazuki, and took every opportunity her schedule could allow to visit Sakura's farm to be with Atra and her son, Akatsuki.

Atra Mixta[]

Atra initially viewed Kudelia as a rival for Mikazuki's affections, which played a role in her choosing to join Tekkadan. However the two soon become close close friends, and together, they help with making meals and washing clothes. After meeting the Turbines and learning about Naze's harem, Atra begins to accept Kudelia as a fellow potential "wife" of Mikazuki. Later, Atra willingly put herself in danger when she claimed to be Kudelia in order to keep her safe. She later tells Mikazuki and Kudelia that they are all family. Atra eventually gives Kudelia a bracelet of her own, matching the ones already worn by herself and Mikazuki. It is also shown that Atra and Mikazuki visit Kudelia at her office on Mars when Mikazuki is not on duty.

When Mikazuki appeared mentally unphased after losing his ability to walk after his battle with the Hashmal, Atra recalled a story Haba told her, where she "tied down" her reckless husband by becoming pregnant. Thinking that she could do the same for Mikazuki, Atra begs Kudelia to bear Mikazuki's child. Kudelia is caught off guard by the sudden request, and quickly declines, but questions Atra why she couldn't bear Mikazuki's child herself. Atra responds that she believes that Kudelia was more deserving of the opportunity than herself, but Kudelia manages to convince Atra that she should make the attempt. After Atra confesses her feelings to Mikazuki, they eventually decide to follow through and try to conceive a child. After doing so, Mikazuki asked Kudelia to help Atra look after their child in the event that he were rendered unable to do so. Despite understanding Atra's feelings, and personally encouraging her to pursue Mikazuki, Kudelia was still heartbroken upon hearing the news, thinking that she missed her opportunity to make her own feelings known. However, she did not fully realize until a moment later that Atra actually wished for a polygamous romantic relationship between herself, Kudelia, and Mikazuki. Kudelia laughed at the how strange their situation was, but fully accepted the love triangle between them, and agreed to their individual requests.

After Mikazuki was killed in the final battle, Kudelia made good on her promise to him, and took every opportunity her schedule could allow to visit Sakura's farm to be with Atra and her son, Akatsuki. At an official promotional event held in Shinjuku on April 9, 2017, it was revealed that Atra and Kudelia married.[1]

Fumitan Admoss[]

Kudelia knew Fumitan since her childhood, and saw her as an older sister figure. She trusted Fumitan enough to ask her about the meaning of a kiss from a man and whether she should marry that person, resulting in the usually cold woman giggling at Kudelia's innocence. Kudelia's close relationship with Fumitan caused the latter to go against the conspiracy to have Kudelia assassinated. Fumitan even gave her life to protect Kudelia. Fumitan's death caused Kudelia's personality to mature, as she now knew a little of what the boys in Tekkadan went through. In her memory, Kudelia named Admoss Company after Fumitan.
