The Lightwave Barrier is a type of defense technology used in the Cosmic Era timeline.
Technical Informations
A lightwave barrier is an energy field which blocks both physical and energy weapons and can be used both on a Mobile Suit as well as an object the size of an asteroid fortress. When installed on a mobile suit, the system can be used to form a triangular arm-mounted beam shield or a complete 360-degree barrier, although the latter could be maintained for only 5 minutes when powered by battery. The "Armure Lumiere" also allowed the CAT1-X Hyperion series to fire their specialized "Zavasta Stigmate" beam submachine gun or "Forfanterie" beam cannons through its barrier.
Lightwave barriers can, however, be pierced by physical blades with anti-beam coating, or by another lightwave shield shaped to have a sufficiently pointed tip.
History
Developed by the Eurasian Federation of the Earth Alliance, the lightwave barrier was produced to protect the Federation's asteroid fortress Artemis. This barrier became known as the "Umbrella of Artemis". Despite this powerful defense system, Artemis was considered to be of no important strantegic value. The Umbrella of Artemis was eventually breached, when GAT-X207 Blitz pilot Nicol Amalfi sneaked to the fortress using his suit's Mirage Colloid cloaking system and destroyed the emitter of the shield.
Later, a mobile suit-scale version, known as "Armure Lumiere", was developed for Eurasia's CAT1-X Hyperion series mobile suits. Hyperion Unit One was piloted by Coordinator Canard Pars, who eventually equipped his suit with a nuclear reactor and a Neutron Jammer Canceller, granting it a far longer use of its barrier. Nevertheless the suit was critically damage in a fight against the YMF-X000A Dreadnought. The Armure Lumiere system was however salvaged and installed on the YMF-X000A/H Dreadnought H. While fighting Hyperion Unit Three, it was Gai Murakumo who discovered the weakness of the lightwave barrier when he used one of the anti-beam coated blades of his MBF-P03 Astray Blue Frame Second L on the barrier.
During the Second Bloody Valentine War two new energy shield versions were developed. One was the Positron Deflector used by Earth Alliance, the other were beam shields used on ZAFT and Terminal mobile suits. Whether any of these systems incorporate technologies of the lightwave barrier is unknown.
Beam Shield
In CE 73, ZAFT began deploying beam shields, which seem to function in the same manner as lightwave shields. The ZGMF-X42S Destiny, and ZGMF-X666S Legend all utilize this technology, as do the Clyne Faction's ZGMF-X19A Infinite Justice, ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom, and ZGMF-XX09T DOM Trooper. However, it is not known if these beam shields share the weakness of the lightwave barriers. It has been proven that if a beam shield meets another with enough power and force the two shields can neutralize each other regardless of the others size.
