Lila Milla Rira (ライラ・ミラ・ライラ Raira Mira Raira?) is a character introduced in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam.

Personality Character[]

Skills & Abilities[]

A survivor of the One Year War, Lila is experienced in space combat and is a capable Mobile Suit commander.

History[]

At the beginning of the Gryps War, she was ordered to stop the AEUG from leaving Side 7 space, and when she saw it with Argama, she tried to sink it, but failed and withdrew.[1] Afterwards, she was part of a joint front with the Titans to pursue the Argama, but was unhappy with Jamaican Daninghan's decision to assign Jerid Messa, who was less skilled than her, as commander, and insulted Jerid. However, she saw potential in him and taught him combat skills, explaining the need to adapt to outer space. After the battle, when Jamaican blamed Jerid for his disappointment, she spoke in defense of him, and they reconciled, even promising to go out for drinks. Afterward, she followed Kamille and the others into the 30 Bunch Colony on Side 1, guessing that there might be an AEUG base there. She took Kamille as a hostage, but when she heard Quattro Bajeena say that the Titans used poison gas to massacre the colony's inhabitants, she got upset and let Kamille escape before leaving. Shortly after, she engaged the Gundam Mk-II that Kamille was piloting. Like Emma Sheen, she was angry at the atrocities of the Titans and was likely to turn, so Kamille tried to persuade her, but she refused. In the end, she was overwhelmed by Kamille's abilities and shot down. In her last moments, she realized that she was an Oldtype before Kamille, a true Newtype, and that she had unconsciously been prejudiced against Newtypes.[2] Having shot down Lila, Kamille was praised as "the second coming of Amuro Ray", but Jerid was moved to tears by her death, which further fueled his will to defeat Kamille. In the final battle of the Gryps War, she appeared for a moment to guide Kamille as he confronts Paptimus Scirocco.[3]

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam Define[]

Lila is the mobile suit team leader of the Bosnia. Upon learning of the AEUG's raid on Gryps that resulted in a Gundam MK-II being stolen, Lila was ordered to chase the AEUG for information. Joining her would be Jerid Messa from the Titans. Although Jerid flaunted how he outranked her as a member of Titans, Lila saw past her "superior"'s true abilities, forcefully telling Jerid the proper orders to give as they attacked the AEUG ship, Mont Blanc, dealing heavy damage and allowing Lila to invade its damaged command center for information. She is shocked to find that the ship's captain already set it to self-destruct, and she would be interrupted by the abrupt arrival of Kamille Bidan, who had stolen the MK-II. Despite having the opportunity to do so, Lila chooses not to kill Kamille, having distaste for harming children, and escapes before telling Jerid to give the command to withdraw.

Although disgruntled at her own hesitation and not spiting the AEUG due to her awareness of the Titans' atrocities, she would receive a message from Jerid, apologizing for his arrogance and asking for her help in becoming stronger. In the next staff meeting for the battle against the AEUG's flagship, Argama, Jerid would take Lila to Jamaican Daninghan, citing her experience in the area and requesting that command for the next battle be given to her. Lila would order the troops not to engage to fiercely with the AEUG. Lila and Jerid would split from the main force to try and lead a secondary attack to disable the Argama's engines, but are spotted by both Kamille and Quattro. As Kamille closed in on her, however, Lila would have an indescribable tingling towards Kamille, who shared the same connection and contacted her, asking why she didn't kill him. Refusing to answer him and declaring the AEUG as fugitives, Lila continues to keep Kamille occupied before ordering Jerid to continue their mission and attack the Argama. Lila would eventually break from Kamille and would attempt to shoot the Argama's bridge but is unable to bring herself to do so before Kamille manages to shoot off her Galbaldy's arm. Still distracted and wondering if this was the relationship between an Oldtype and a Newtype, Lila is killed when Kamille fires a second shot that tears through her unit's torso.

Jerid is devastated by her death, but when Jamaican believes that they had suffered such casualties as a cost to damage the Argama's main engine, Jerid defends her and states that they were only able to complete their objective thanks to her. As he returned back to his unit, he would find an unread message sent by Lila before death, apologizing to Jerid for breaking their promise to get a drink together after the battle and warning him not to repeat her mistakes.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • In the show, Lila is always addressed as "lieutenant" but she wears the insignia of a lieutenant commander. This is perhaps due to an error in the script translation or illustration team. As a senior veteran pilot and mobile suit squadron commander, the rank of lieutenant commander is much more appropriate for Lila.
  • While she never was a member of the Titans in the original series canon (albeit she did work in close cooperation with them), video games that depict the Titans often will act as if she is a member of their organization and she will be regarded as a Titan by the other actual members, complete with having actual authority over them in their capacities as officers of the Titans.
  • In the movie trilogy, Lila dies against Kamille in the AEUG's Jaburo Drop rather than beforehand.
  • While relatively minor when compared to the other deaths in Zeta Gundam, Gen Urobuchi stated that his nihilistic writings were influenced by her death.[4]
Lila Milla Rira of Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam died soon after her Shower Scene shocked me so much at that time. How could Director Tomino allow such a beautiful, booby character casually die? I hated him very much back in the days when I'm in college. I think even though it's fictional anime characters, it's not a good thing for them to die so easily.
