The MBF-M1A M1A Astray is a space combat variant of the MBF-M1 M1 Astray introduced in the original design series Mobile Suit Gundam SEED MSV. Its most notable pilot is Barry Ho.
Technology & Combat Characteristics[]
A space-use variant of MBF-M1 M1 Astray, the M1A Astray was developed to protect Ame-no-Mihashira. The main difference from the M1 Astray is that the leg structure of the M1A Astray has been greatly simplified, and although this resulted in its legs being only able to support the mobile suit's own weight, it also increased AMBAC capability by 30%. The M1A Astray's maneuverability is further improved due to enhanced vernier thrusters, as well as the mounting of additional thrusters throughout its body.
The M1A Astray is equipped with additional propellant and coolant tanks to meet its higher fuel consumption. It also has enlarged antennas on its head for better communication capability. The fixed armaments of the M1A Astray are the same as the M1 Astray's, consisting of two head-mounted CIWS and two beam sabers. In addition, it can be equipped with a sniper beam rifle instead of the normal beam rifle used by M1 Astray. Due to its coloring, the M1A Astray is often mistaken for MBF-P03 Gundam Astray Blue Frame.
Armaments[]
- "Igelstellung" 75mm Multi-Barrel CIWS
- A pair of head-mounted Vulcan guns. These guns are small-caliber, shell-firing weapons that are designed to shoot down missiles and lightly armored vehicles, but are ineffective against the heavier armor of a mobile suit.
- Type 70 Beam Saber
- The standard close combat beam weapon of Orb mobile suits. The M1A Astray is equipped with two beam sabers stored on its backpack.
- Type 71-44 Improved Sniper Beam Rifle
- A sniper beam rifle developed specifically for long distance shooting on the earth's orbit. The rifle is equipped with high precision sensors and an aiming rectification system to compensate for deviation caused by the earth's magnetic field, giving it very high accuracy. Under favorable conditions, the rifle is accurate up to an incredible 400 kilometers (comparable to a battleship's beam cannons). Thanks to this weapon, the M1A Astray is capable to shooting down enemy units over a long range.
History[]
In C.E. 71, the Orb Union created its first mass-produced mobile suit, the MBF-M1 M1 Astray. A space-optimized variant, the MBF-M1A M1A Astray, was also developed at the Ame-no-Mihashira space station. Most M1A Astrays are operated by the Sahaku family, who owned its production facility, and used the suit to protect Ame-no-Mihashira. Spare parts for the machine were also developed in parallel on Earth and later assembled into complete units aboard the battleship Kusanagi. These units were assigned to ace pilots on board the ship, including Barry Ho, who later used it in the Second Battle of Jachin Due. After the war, Ame-no-Mihashira was attacked Eurasian Federation's MS force. However, this attack was repelled by the M1A Astrays piloted by the Socius clones operating under the Sahakus. They disabled 30 GAT-01 Strike Daggers in 10 minutes.[1]
