After the adoption of the MS-05 Zaku I it became clear, through combat records and other functional data, that there were numerous problems with the Zaku I that could not be overlooked for future conflicts. The Zaku I itself was created with internal power pipes for its Fluid Pulse System and low internal volume with no wasted space, leaving little room for expansion. For this reason an improvement plan was implemented and the Zaku I was redesigned based on factoring in ease of production and maintenance, as well as allowing expandability to adapt to changing situations for after the outbreak of war. Like the MS-04 Bugu, the power pipes were mounted externally, and the fusion reactor output could be increased to allow for greater expandability.
Completed as the "MS-06 Zaku II", an 'A' was appended to the model number of the pre-production prototype which would be known as the MS-06A Zaku II. The
demonstrated testing results of its performance was enough to satisfy the Principality of Zeon leadership, and they moved to immediately adopt the Zaku II and its mass production began in time for the outbreak of the One Year War.
The first mass production type of the MS-06 Zaku II had some improvements over the 'A type' and reclassified as the MS-06C Zaku II, adding a 'C' to the model number. The MS-06 Zaku II series would ultimately consist of countless minor variations based on the C Type, such as the C-5. The Type C Zaku II would go on to be produced in large numbers as the main Mobile Suit machine of the Principality of Zeon.
