Disambiguation:

The MS-09R Rick Dom is a mass production space combat mobile suit and a variant of the MS-09 Dom. It was introduced in the TV anime Mobile Suit Gundam.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

Proposed by Zimmad as one of the competing designs for Zeon's next generation space-use mobile suit in the middle stage of the One Year War, the MS-09R was a variant of the ground-use MS-09 Dom.[1] The MS-09 was chosen as the developmental base due to its good basic design.[2] Its block structure was a major factor that enabled its specifications to be easily changed without modifications to its basic frame.[3]

The MS-09R removed the ground-use equipment of its predecessor and replaced them with space-use equipment, increasing its propellant capacity and its vernier thruster output. The thermonuclear jet engines on its feet were replaced with thermonuclear rocket engines.[4] Its backpack thrusters adopted the Saturn Engine,[5] a type of thermonuclear rocket engine that used heavy elements as propellant, granting it higher thrust than those that used lighter elements.[6] Its total spec, including cost and ease of manufacture, surpassed that of the MS-06R-2 Zaku II High Mobility Type, the most advanced mobile suit at the time.[4]

In addition to retaining the Dom's armaments, including its signature Giant Bazooka, some units under Dozle Zabi were said to be equipped with the experimental Beam Bazooka. Though the Rick Dom's generator output was insufficient to use beam weapons, the Beam Bazooka did not require energy from the mobile suit to be used. However, the weapon never reached mass production due to frequent explosions, though it was rumored that an improved variant of the Rick Dom capable of using the Beam Bazooka safely existed.[4]

Armaments[]

  • Scattering Beam Cannon
Like the Dom, the Rick Dom mounts a scattering beam cannon on the left side of its chest.[3][7] This beam weapon was only powerful enough to temporarily blind enemies due to a lack of output, but it was said to have been more effective in space where light sources are limited.[3][7] At close ranges, the beam was also capable of dissipating I-fields, rendering weapons that depended on I-fields to focus and shape a cohesive blade of energy, such as the Beam Saber, inert for short periods.[7][8]
  • Heat Saber
The Rick Dom's main close combat weapon, it uses thermal energy to superheat its blade to melt through the armor of an enemy machine. It has an electrical discharge function and can store high charges via the application of Minovsky particle physics. As the heat saber degrades during use, it is discarded after usage. Mounted on the back when not in use.
  • Beam Saber
In the novel version of "Mobile Suit Gundam", this is equipped instead of the heat saber. One of the prototype beam weapons developed by the Zeon army, it has a lower rate of convergence than the one deployed by the Federation army and has a thicker beam blade.
  • H&L-GB05R/360mm Giant Bazooka
A bazooka for MS that fires rocket-propelled 360mm physical rounds. Liquid fuel supplied through a pipe from the Rick Dom's hand is injected as a primary propellant, and then the projectile's speed is increased by rocket motor ignition. It is fed by a 10 rounds magazine, and a single round can blow the torso off of an enemy mobile suit.
  • Ex-T2-2 Beam Bazooka
One of the prototype beam weapons developed by the Principality of Zeon military, it did not use Energy CAP technology for mega particle compression and thus did not require its user to have a high generator output. Though it took time to charge up, its destructive power was said to be several times that of the MS-14A Gelgoog's beam rifle. However, due to frequent explosions, it never reached mass production.[4]
  • M-120A1 120mm Machine Gun
The same portable firearm used by the Zaku II. It can switch between semi-automatic and automatic fire. Although useless against Luna Titanium Alloy, it can still destroy weaker armor material with multiple shots. It fires 120mm caliber rounds that are stored in a 100-rounds drum magazine.
  • MMP-80 90mm Machine Gun
A small caliber machine gun for mobile suits developed under the United Maintenance Plan. The overall shape and mechanism of the Zaku Machine Gun, which was previously deployed, has been changed. The magazine has been changed from a drum magazine to a box magazine, and a 197mm grenade launcher is available as an option. The caliber has been reduced to 90mm, but as a result, the hit rate has improved, and the 90mm shell used is also excellent in initial velocity and anti-MS firepower. The number of bullets loaded is 32 in the standard single magazine and 100 in the triple magazine. The late production model features a different barrel and hand guard, resulting in a more compact shape.
  • H&L-SB25K/280mmA-P Zaku Bazooka
A portable, physical projectile-type firearm. It is primarily for anti-ship combat and displays its power in hit and run attacks. It can also be used against enemy mobile suits, but it is harder to hit a constantly moving target.
  • Shield Lance
A weapon used by Zabi's royal guards, as its name suggests, it is a lance with a shield attached to it. This allows the pilot to switch back and forth between offense and defense. The only downside of this weapon is its heavy weight, which reduces the Rick Dom's speed and mobility.
  • Knuckle Shield
The knuckle shield is a modified Zaku II shoulder shield carried on the arm, with the curve of the armor fitting over the mobile suit's hand. One of the modifications is the additions of three spikes placed on the plate that rests in front of the hand. These spikes make the knuckle shield an effective bashing weapon.
A simplified, disposable rocket launcher. As the warhead is not equipped with a guidance device, it is extremely hard to use the Sturm Faust to hit a moving target accurately. However, it is still a highly destructive portable weapon. Can be stored on waist armor.
  • Heat Sword
A melee weapon originally developed for the MS-07B Gouf. Like the Zaku's heat tomahawk, the heat sword has a blade that is heated to high temperatures to increase its cutting capacity.

History[]

In September, U.C. 0079, Zeon began planning the development of its next generation space combat mobile suit. Four designs were submitted: the MS-06R-2 Zaku II High Mobility Type, the MS-09R Rick Dom, the MS-15 Gyan and the MS-11 Gelgoog. It is said that the military favored the Gelgoog from the start, while the other choices were nothing but fillers.[1][4]

However, with the appearance of the Federation's RX series mobile suits, the military requested the Gelgoog to be able to use beam weapons. This caused its development to be delayed and its model number to be changed to MS-14. During this time, it was decided that a space-use mobile suit with high productivity should be mass produced. As such, the MS-09R Rick Dom, which surpassed the MS-06R-2 in terms of total specifications, including productivity, was put into mass production.[4] It was said that the MS-09R was redesigned from the MS-09 in only two months.[9]

A different account stated that the plan to modify the MS-09 for space combat existed more than one month before it entered mass production, as part of a top-secret collaboration between Zeonic and Zimmad led by the military. The result being a MS-06R series unit with its lower body replaced with that of a MS-09.[4] It is said that this unit acted as the test bed for the Rick Dom's thermonuclear rocket engines.[10]

Regardless of its developmental history, the Rick Dom acted as the Zeon's primary space-use mobile suit until the mass production of the MS-14A Gelgoog began.[11] The Rick Dom was produced from Side 3 and Granada, and Dom production lines could easily be converted to produce Rick Doms.[3] By early November, U.C. 0079, the Granada factory's MS-09 production line was converted to produce MS-09R.[4]

On December 2, at 1900 hours, the White Base launched from Jaburo as one of four decoy ships.[12] It encountered the Camel Patrol Fleet led by Lieutenant Dren, which consisted of three Musai-class cruisers and six Rick Doms. However, they were all destroyed by the White Base team with relative ease. Later, while the White Base was leaving Side 6, the Conscon Mobile Fleet engaged it with twelve Rick Doms. However, the White Base team destroyed all twelve units within three minutes, nine of which were shot down by Amuro Ray in the RX-78-2 Gundam. Numerous Rick Doms later participated in the Battle of Solomon and the Battle of A Baoa Qu[13]

Variants[]

  • MS-09R Rick Dom (Primus Fleet)
This machine was deployed in the 8th Patrol Fleet of the Principality of Zeon's Mobile Assault Force's 2nd Area Army Special Squadron (commonly known as the "Primus Fleet"), commanded by Major Johnny Ridden. The Rick Dom (Primus Fleet) was painted with night-vision camouflage, an advanced version of night-vision colors, in accordance with its operational needs.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • The "Rick" in the Rick Dom's name stands for space-use.[14] The Rick Dom would begin the tradition of space-use mobile suits being prefixed with "Rick".
  • In the original TV series and the movie trilogy, the Rick Dom's heat saber is yellow when not heated and blue when heated. However, in subsequent media, they were depicted as grey when not heated and bright orange when heated.
  • The Rick Dom's beam bazooka first appeared in the Mobile Suit Gundam novelization. It first received a visual design in the 1999 Master Grade Rick Dom model kit and later appeared in other official media.
  • In the original series, the Rick Dom was identical to the Dom aside from the addition of verniers to the legs and the skirt. However, model kits, starting from the Master Grade Rick Dom in 1999, differentiated the Rick Dom by giving it larger backpack thrusters and a differently shaped rear skirt.
