The MS-14JG Gelgoog Jäger was a mobile suit introduced in Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

A variation of the MS-14 Gelgoog, the MS-14JG was specialized for precision firing mission, and was also known as "Gelgoog Sniper Type".[1][2] It was designed with the United Maintenance Plan (UMP) in mind, greatly increasing its specifications and ease of piloting, as well as simplifying its manufacturing process and improving the interchangeability of its parts with other models.[2][3]

The Gelgoog Jäger was equipped with a total of 24 posture control sub-thrusters in addition to the main thrusters, significantly improving its mobility in space. Due to its nature as a sniper unit, its monoeye has a larger field of vision than standard units. In addition, since it was designed as a commander unit, it was equipped with a head-mounted blade antenna by default for enhanced communications. Similarly, its backpack had another antenna and a laser communication unit.[2]

The Gelgoog Jäger's primary weapon was a large-sized beam machine gun, which could either fire pulsed beam pellets or a single-shot long-range beam.[2] It was able to use this weapon thanks to a tuned up, new model generator.[1] The beam machine gun's low rate of beam deterioration, combined with its exceptionally accurate scope and the Jäger's latest fire control hardware and software, granted it unparalleled firing accuracy.[2]

As with other UMP mobile suits, the Gelgoog Jäger adopted standard 2nd Phase Production Type cockpit and manipulators, meaning it had the same control scheme as its peers and could use all of their weapons, reducing the required pilot training time for switching models and compensating for Zeon's lack of pilots.[2][3]

Armaments[]

  • Beam Machine Gun
The Gelgoog Jäger's primary weapon, which prioritized destructive power over penetration. Its power was greater than the beam rifle used by the MS-14A Gelgoog. It could fire either pulsed beam pellets or a single-shot long-range beam. Its beam deterioration rate was low in long-range mode, allowing it to shatter enemies with high precision.[1][2]
  • Beam Spot Gun
The Gelgoog Jäger was equipped with two beam spot guns, one mounted on each forearm. A close-range weapon still in development, its power was only enough to intimidate or hamper enemies, though it could potentially deal lethal damage at point-blank range.[2] They could also emit a beam blade each.[3]
  • Beam Saber
A single beam saber stored at an unknown location. It appears to be the same as the single-emitter model used by the MS-14F Gelgoog Marine.[4]
  • Giant Bazooka (Rick Dom II)
The same weapon used by the MS-09R-2 Rick Dom II, it was favored by Gelgoog pilots as well due to its reliability and destructive power.[1]
  • Sturm Faust
A weapon developed for the Zaku, it was also usable by the Gelgoog Jäger.[1]
  • Shield
An optional shield used by the Gelgoog Jäger, it is the same shield as used by the MS-14Fs Gelgoog Marine Commander Type.
  • Spike Shield
A shield that doubles as a melee weapon, originally used by the Gelgoog Marine. It was used by Sergeant Tug's unit, serving as its only weapon.[5]

Special Equipment & Features[]

  • External Propellant Tank
The Gelgoog Jäger could optionally equip two back-mounted propellant tanks, which extend its operational time in space by 200%.[2]
  • Shell Carrying Case
A carrying case that holds up to six shells for use by the Xamel Cannon. It was mounted on the left arm of Sergeant Tug's Gelgoog Jäger.[6]

History[]

Developed at the very end of the One Year War, the Gelgoog Jäger was produced only in very limited numbers.[1][3]

Shin Matsunaga's unit[]

MSV-RSM Jager vs Big Ruf

Matsunaga's Gelgoog Jäger engaging Gilliam's Big Ruf

Prior to the Battle of Solomon, Shin Matsunaga returned to Side 3 under the order of Dozle Zabi to request reinforcements from Sovereign Degwin Sodo Zabi. However, he was arrested by the Chimera Corps for treason, but managed to escape from Zum City just as he was about to be transferred to the Gihren Royal Guard.

At an industrial plant colony, Matsunaga received a Gelgoog Jäger prepared by Killing J. Dunnigan. The Gihren Royal Guard, led by Robert Gilliam, attacked the plant. Gilliam, piloting a MA-05R Big Ruf, attempted to destroy the entire plant with a large anti-ship missile. However, Matsunaga intercepted the missile with the Gelgoog Jäger's beam machine gun.

As the Battle of Solomon began, Matsunaga engaged in a fierce battle with the Big Ruf. However, as he drew the Jäger's beam saber and charged the Big Ruf, the latter grabbed the Jäger with its claws. At this point, Solomon was attacked by the Solar System, and Gilliam taunted Matsunaga, saying that he accomplished nothing. Just as Gilliam prepared to finish him off with the Big Ruf's beam cannon, however, Matsunaga freed himself using beam baldes projected from the Jäger's spot beam guns.

Enraged, Matsunaga attacked the Big Ruf relentlessly, damaging it and forcing Gilliam to retreat. The Chimera Corps moved to cover Gilliam, but they proved no match for Matsunaga until Johnny Ridden joined the battle in his MS-14B Gelgoog High Mobility Type. Matsunaga engaged in a fierce duel with Ridden, but the battle was inconclusive, as it was interrupted by the arrival of two YMS-15E Gyan Eos from Degwin's Royal Guard, who ordered both parties to stop and offered to escort Matsunaga to Zum City.

For unknown reasons, Matsunaga did not pilot the unit again and switched back to his MS-06R-1A Zaku II High Mobility Type during the mission to escort the Gwazine-class battleship carrying Zenna Zabi and Mineva Lao Zabi to Axis.

Operation Rubicon[]

On December 15,[7] as the first phase of Operation Rubicon, three warships from the Zeon Mobile Assault Force: the Tivvay-class high speed cruiser Graf Zeppelin and the Musai-class Final Production Type light cruisers Siegfried and Valkyrie, launched their mobile suit teams at the Side 6 colony of Ribo.[8]

The mobile suit teams, which consisted of numerous MS-09R-2 Rick Dom II, MS-06FZ Zaku II Kai, and at least three Gelgoog Jäger, soon engaged in combat with the RGM-79GS GM Command Space Type defending the colony. The Gelgoog Jäger fared well against the GM Command Space Time, shooting down at least two. Unbeknownst to the Earth Federation Forces, the attack was a diversion. Taking advantage of the chaotic battle, Zeon soldier Bernard Wiseman entered the colony in a special duty vessel disguised as the civilian cargo ship Agua Verde.[8]

Gelgoog Jägers also appeared as simulated enemies in the RX-78NT-1 Gundam NT-1's combat simulation program.[9]

Phantom Bullets[]

In December, U.C. 0082, a group of three Zeon Remnant pilots - Sergeant Major Francy Berdeau, Sergeant Tug, and "The Professor" - launched several terrorist attacks on the outskirts of Von Braun using a modified YMS-16M Xamel cannon and three customized mobile suits.[5]

Berdeau, piloting the MS-06F Zaku II (Gunner), balanced the Xamel cannon; The Professor, piloting the MS-06F-2 Zaku II (Rangefinder), collected targeting data; finally, Tug, piloting a restored Gelgoog Jäger, aimed the Xamel cannon based on data from the Zaku II Rangefinder. The Gelgoog Jäger was selected for this role due to having been designed for long-range sniping.[5]

After the trio launched an attack on Anaheim Electronics' Livermore Plant on December 4, AE ordered test pilot Jack Bayard to assit with EFF lunar patrols in the experimental RX-78GP00 Gundam "Blossom". In an astronomical coincidence, when the trio fired the Xamel cannon, the shell ended up hitting the GP00's radome, revealing their location.[5]

Tug, piloting the Gelgoog Jäger, attempted to attack the GP00 using its Spike Shield, but ended up missing. Eventually, after a chaotic scuffle, all three Zeon Remnant pilots were arrested by a GM Command Space Type accompanying the GP00.[5]

Notes & Trivia[]

  • Jäger is the German word for "hunter".
  • Since the Gelgoog Jäger's beam spot gun was said to be in-development during the One Year War, some sources stated that the units seen in 0080 were actually equipped with machine cannons, similar to the ones used by the Gelgoog Marine.[3] This was the case in the Gihren's Greed series.
  • The Gelgoog Jäger's total thrust is abnormally high for a One Year War era mobile suit, surpassing even the XM-X1 Crossbone Gundam X-1 at maximum output.
  • In a what-if scenario in the video game Mobile Suit Gundam: Encounters in Space, Shin Matsunaga receives a customized white Gelgoog Jäger and fights at the Battle of A Baoa Qu.
  • The Gelgoog Jäger is never seen using a melee weapon in War in the Pocket, making it unclear if it is equipped with a melee weapon at all. Various games depict it being equipped with either a beam saber or a beam naginata.
