The MS-14 Gelgoog (ゲルググ Gerugugu?) was a series of mobile suits produced by the Principality of Zeon. It was the last of Zeon's mass production mobile suit series during the One Year War.
History[]
In the early stage of the One Year War, the MS-06 Zaku II series served as Zeon's main force space-use mobile suit. However, by the middle stage of the war, Zeon learned that the Earth Federation Forces was developing its own mobile suits and began planning the development of the MS-06's successor in response. Four designs were submitted: the MS-06R-2 Zaku II High Mobility Type, the MS-09R Rick Dom, and the newly designed MS-15 Gyan and MS-11 (which later became MS-14) Gelgoog. However, it was said that the military favored the Gelgoog from the start, while the other choices were nothing but fillers.[1][2]
The Gelgoog was a joint development between Zeon's three biggest arms manufacturers: Zeonic was responsible for its basic production and avionics, Zimmad was responsible for its thrusters, and MIP was responsible for its weapons.[3][4] It was to be the first Zeon mobile suit to be equipped with beam weapons, including a beam rifle and a beam sword. However, the development of beam weapons delayed its completion by three months.[2] The early production variant first rolled out in October, U.C. 0079, but the production of beam weapons did not begin until late November.[1]
Being the culmination of all of Zeon's mobile suit development know-how, the Gelgoog's specifications were said to rival those of the Federation's RX-78-2 Gundam. However, due to its late rollout, it was only able to participate in the last month of the war and had very little impact on its outcome. This was only compounded by the fact that Zeon had lost much of its experienced pilots by the time of the Gelgoog's rollout.[3] During the Battle of A Baoa Qu, many Gelgoogs were piloted by poorly trained new recruits, who were unable to draw out the Gelgoog's high performance.[5]
Despite this, the Gelgoog was still a highly regarded mobile suit with incalculable influence on the development of later mobile suits. It was even said that the outcome of the war might have been different if it had been deployed just one month earlier.[3] Even after the end of the war, both the Federation and Zeon Remnants continued adding to the Gelgoog's lineage.[4]
