The MSZ-008 ZII (aka Z-Two) is a prototype transformable attack-use mobile suit. It's featured in the original design series Z-MSV (Zeta Gundam Mobile Suit Variations) and the manga series Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ Side Story: Mirage of Zeon and Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn - Bande Dessinee. It was originally designed by Kazumi Fujita.

Technology & Combat Characteristics

Sometimes pronounced as "Z-Two" instead of "Zeta-Two", it was intended to be a successor machine of the MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam, which uses the simplified frame similar to that of the MSA-005 Methuss instead of the Ζeta Gundam's, which was deemed too complicated. The machine focuses on space use, thus the ZII's mobile armor mode lacks the waverider's ability of atmospheric re-entry and flight on Earth. However, its mobile armor mode has higher acceleration and maneuverability. The ZII is armed with a pair of beam sabers and a mega beam rifle, which has firepower equal to the Ζeta Gundam's hyper mega launcher. It also lacks the Bio-sensor which was featured in the Ζeta Gundam and its later successor, the MSZ-010 ΖΖ Gundam.

Armaments

  • Beam Saber
The beam saber is the standard close-combat melee weapon of mobile suits descended from the RX-78-2 Gundam. The pair employed by the ZII are stored in hip recharge racks and are hand carried in use.
  • Beam Rifle
A beam rifle very similar, if not identical, to that used by the Z Gundam, which is a handheld weapon powered by a replaceable e-pac.
  • Clay Bazooka
A projectile-firing bazooka, as its name indicates, the clay bazooka was originally designed to fire adhesive rounds which immobilize enemy machines rather than destroying them outright. However, this weapon can fire several different types of ammunition, and it's normally used with conventional explosive shells.
  • Mega Beam Rifle
The ZII's most distinctive new weapon, the Mega Beam Rifle is a long-barreled, handheld weapon. It can achieve output comparable to the Hyper Mega Launcher by connecting it directly to the ZII's main generator.

History

Originally designed as a successor to the Ζeta Gundam and keeping manufacturing costs were lowered, Anaheim Electronics constructed one prototype unit before the design team were requested to place priority on the ZZ Gundam for the AEUG. It is assigned to former AEUG Assault Squadron Commander Kei Kirishima during the events of the first Neo Zeon War to capture the asteroid base Axis.

Sometime after the war, the unit is transferred to Londo Bell for further testing as the whole mobile suit concept is used for the basis for a streamlined version, the RGZ-95 ReZEL.
