Maharaja Karn (マハラジャ・カーン) is a character who appears in the Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Deleted Affair: Portrait Of Young Comet manga series.

History[]

Maharaja Karn was an admiral with the Zeon forces and the father of Neo Zeon leader Haman Karn. He was staying at Granada before the end of the war.[1] He was responsible for the Zeonic army's exodus to Axis base after the One Year War ended. Holding loyal to the Zabi family, Karn declared Mineva Lao Zabi heir to the Principality of Zeon and was named regent of the Axis Zeon faction until she came of age.

He died in U.C. 0083. Though attributed to natural causes, Karn's death was partly blamed on the machinations of his military aide Colonel Enzo Bernini, who sought to start another war with the Earth Federation. After his death, his daughter, Haman, inherited his position as Zabi family retainer at age sixteen.

Though Karn supported Mineva's claim to Zeon and enjoyed a comfortable position in Degwin's regime, it was implied that he was a supporter of Zeon's founder Zeon Zum Deikun, and was even aware of Char's true identity.[2]

Trivia[]

  • Mahārāja is not a common given name. Rather it is a Sanskrit title meaning "great king". The term has been used since antiquity for Hindu rulers of widely varying significance in India and has spread throughout Southeast Asia, generally keeping a similar meaning. Karn, on the other hand, is a dated mining term for "a pile of rocks", derived from Celtic languages where cairn were specifically erected as trail markers, burial mounds or memorials. Maharaja's name reflects his position; he was first introduced as the leader of Axis, a literal pile of rocks that served as a memorial to the defeated Principality of Zeon.
