Mare Strode (マーレ・ストロード, Mare Sutorodo^?) is a fictional character in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny Astray. He is the original pilot of ZGMF-X31S Abyss Gundam, before it was stolen and given to Auel Neider.

Mare has a hot-headed personality, although laid back at times he snaps quite easily.

Mare is a specialist when it comes to underwater combat, his skills are said to rival that of Jane Houston aka The White Whale.

History

Mare was chosen to become the test pilot for the ZGMF-X31S Abyss Gundam solely because of his underwater combat prowess. Although he was designated as a test pilot for the second stage gundam, he was immensely bitter over the fact that he was only a test pilot while Shinn Asuka was a designated MS pilot. However he is eventually designated as the official pilot of the Abyss Gundam at the unveiling of the units to the public, not soon after he is shot during the Armory One Raid by one of the extended pilots. He ultimately does recover and is later assigned to pilot the first Destiny Impulse Gundam.
