Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Deleted Affair [C.D.A] ~ Portrait of Young Comet is an manga series written and illustrated by Hiroyuki Kitazume. It was serialized in Gundam Ace from 2001 to 2009.

Summary[]

Char's Deleted Affair details the story of the arrival of Char Aznable at Axis with the remainder of the Zeon forces that survived the One Year War and his fated meeting with a then 14-year-old Haman Karn. In addition to dealing with the loss of Lalah Sune and the aftermath of his achieved revenge against the Zabi family, he must also deal with the advances of the young Haman. Char must find his destiny in Axis and deal with a Colonel Enzo Bernini, who is bent on restarting the war with the Earth Federation.

Plot[]

Escape from A Baoa Qu[]

After assassinating Kycilia Zabi, Char briefly loses the will to keep going. However, encouraged by Lalah's spirit, he rendezvous with M'Quve, who was guiding Zenna Zabi and Mineva Lao Zabi aboard a Gwazine-class battleship, hoping to bring them back to the Zeon homeland. At Char's suggestion, M'Quve used the Gwazine as a decoy and had Zenna and Mineva enter a booster-equipped Komusai instead. M'Quve accompanied the Komusai in the YMS-15 Gyan while Char accompanied the Gwazine in his repaired MS-14S Gelgoog Commander Type.

As Char predicted, the Federation's attention was attracted to the Gwazine. A nearby Magellan-class battleship deployed two mobile suit teams after the battleship. Char was able to easily wipe out the Federation mobile suits, shooting down 12 RGM-79 GMs in two minutes. However, the Magellan's captain realized that the Gwazine was a decoy and turned his attention to the Komusai. Just before Char destroyed the ship, it fired one last shot in the direction of the Komusai, hitting the Gyan and killing M'Quve.

After escaping the A Baoa Qu sector, the Gwazine recovered the Komusai. However, since the Federation and the Zeon government had already signed the Granada Treaty, the Gwazine instead made its way to Axis, a supply base for Zeon's Jupiter Energy Fleet located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. The commander of the base, Maharaja Karn, welcomed them.

Life on Axis[]

At some point after arriving at Axis, Maharaja revealed to Char that he dreamed of achieving Spacenoid independence without resorting to force of arms, and that he believed continued armed resistance would only result in the Federation forces destroying Axis. Char expressed support for his ideals. However, Maharaja was opposed by Enzo Bernini, Maharaja's military advisor and the leader of the Axis' hawk faction, who wished to restart the war with the Federation.

Char also meets Lieutenant Natalie Bianchi and Haman Karn, Maharaja's young daughter. Despite her young age, Haman was a skilled mobile suit pilot, having idolized Char since childhood. She also had Newtype aptitude, much to Char's concern, who feared that she would meet the same fate as Lalah.

During a test flight for the mobile armor AMA-00GR Zero GR, Char noticed the shadow of a warship in Axis' S Field. Meanwhile, Maharaja's subordinate Heinz Webern reported that someone in Axis has been secretly sending information outside.

Lalah's spirit encouraged Char to accept Haman's feelings for her, saying that her pure heart was too dangerous and that she would be used by those with ill intent if she is not protected. Meanwhile, Zenna Zabi passes away in her sleep. Having sensed Zenna's death, Haman runs to Char's room and embraces him before fainting.

Meanwhile, the radical faction within the Earth Federation Forces, led by Jamitov Hymen, plans an attack to destroy Axis.

After Haman was hospitalized, Natalie explains to Char that Haman demonstrated Newtype abilities since childhood and accepted Newtype tests in her tens. However, she was traumatized by the constant tests and eventually grew to hate her abilities. However, she decided to continue the tests upon learning of the achievements of Zeon's Newtype Corps. Natalie stated that Haman's mind may collapse if she does not learn to control her powers, and the only one who could help her do so was Char. During this meeting, Char also meets her former wingmates, Andy and Ricardo Vega.

Enzo proposes holding a Sovereign succession ceremony for Mineva to boost morale in the Axis. Due to the political atmosphere within Axis, Maharaja had no choice but to accept. Later, Heinz discovers an entire fleet of Zeon warship wreckages in the S Field. However, he was captured by a Zaku and taken aboard one of the ships.

Enzo's Plot[]

Heinz's craft was taken into a Musai-class cruiser by the Zaku, where he was taken captive by a group of Zeon soldiers. The Zaku's pilot was revealed to be Carth Congray, one of Heinz's former students. Carth accidentally reveals that they plan to use the ships to lure in the Federation fleet. Heinz is then imprisoned in a holding cell.

Back at the Axis, three hours had passed since Char and Maharaja lost contact with Heinz. Char asks to go and investigate, but Maharaja suspects there is danger and stops him. He says that the matter may be related to the hawk faction within the Axis, who wanted to restart the war with the Federation, a war that Axis could not win. The two decided to watch the situation for now.

After Char left, Maharaja took out a picture of him standing with Degwin Sodo Zabi, Zeon Zum Deikun, Casval Deikun, and Artesia Deikun, revealing that he suspected that Char was Casval Deikun all along. He monologued that he thought of Char not as a mere pilot, but as the future leader of both Axis and Zeon.

Natalie checks on Haman in her room, where she had sealed herself away ever since she left the hospital. Haman was still insecure about embracing Char wearing nothing but a bathrobe, but Natalie lifts her spirits and jokingly states that she may steal Char from her if she continues sulking.

In the command room, Enzo and Major Dario Santi discuss how their planning for half a year was finally coming to fruition. They were joined by Major Marco Vecchio, who reported that Heinz's craft had been captured. Enzo commented that Maharaja was always overcautious, and that once this operation succeeds, the moderates within Axis, including Char, would also lean toward restarting the war. Monica Bartholomew agrees. Dario suggests letting Natalie in on their plan, but Enzo believes that Natalie could leak the plan to the moderates, and that it would have to wait until she reveals her stance.

Char prepares to deploy in his Gelgoog. However, it was unavilable, forcing him to switch to the Zero GR. Mechanic Hubert explains to Char that because of Mineva's succession ceremony, he was ordered to place all available mobile suits on standby. This aroused Char's suspicion, since the mobile suit demonstration at the ceremony only required one squadron. Char realizes that the situation was far worse than he anticipated, and that the Zero GR might not be enough, meaning he needs Allies.

On a Musai approaching Axis, Federation spy Kyle Mackenzie was caught right handed as he reported to the Federation. The Zeon soldiers who cornered him revealed that they knew who he was the moment he boarded the ship. They used him to leak the intelligence to the Federation on purpose, and that on the battleship he contacted, one of its crew members, Patrick, was a Zeon spy.

On the mobile fleet that was heading for the Asteroid belt, the Federation prepared their newest mobile suit, the RGM-79GS GM Command Space Type Improved Type, for combat. Suddenly, the Fleet commander was informed by Patrick that their navigation system was destroyed by a virus hidden in Kyle's data, and that they would be unable to repair it unless they return to base. With only 60 days of supplies left and the closest supply base 45 days away, the commander was left with no choice but to take over Axis.

Char informed Andy and Ricardo that the hawk faction was planning to start another war, most likely on the day of the ceremony. Char told them that there may be a battle with the Federation, but most of Axis's pilots were inexperienced. The two agreed to help Char in whatever way they could. With 7 days left until the ceremony, Axis was about to face its largest crisis yet.

Federation Attack on Axis[]

As the ceremony nears, the Axis hawk faction begins their final preparations for the operation, confident in their victory.

As the ceremony began, the Federation fleet reached the Axis's outskirts and sighted the large asteroid in the S Sector. The wreckage fleet fired at the Federation fleet, purposefully missing. When a beam struck the large asteroid, the hawks detonated the explosives, causing debris to hit the Axis as planned. While Enzo and Maharaja argued over whether or not to deploy forces in response, Haman stepped onto stage in her formal wear and asked everyone present to rise up and defend Axis, saying that if no one was willing to fight, she would fight alone.

Roused by Haman's speech, many soldiers headed for the MS deck. Maharaja attempted to stop Char from leaving, not wanting to lose him, but Char said that he had to protect Haman, causing him to relent. Haman boarded the Schnee Weiss and asked to deploy. Natalie tried to stop her, pointing out that she had no combat experience and that she had already done enough to inspire people. Haman replied that words without actions is meaningless and that she would blow up the hatch if Natalie does not open it. Left with no choice, Natalie opened the hatch and Haman deployed in the Schnee Weiss.

As Char, Andy, and Ricardo each deployed, Maharaja finally gave the order to deploy all forces in defense of Axis. He also asked the people of Moussa to head for shelters and for Mineva to be taken to shelter, and, if worst comes to worst, escape in a high speed shuttle.

Axis deployed over 100 mobile suits, but the launch deck was clogged with mobile suits, preventing Char's Zero GR from launching immediately due to its large size. In response, the Federation fleet commander ordered all mobile suits to deploy for battle, save for a team for each ship's defense. After the Zero GR finally launched, Char thought to himself that even one mobile suit would be a huge problem if it broke into Axis. However, due to the large number of enemies, shooting all of them down would have been impossible. Therefore, the only solution was to force the enemy flagship to surrender. But first, he needed to make sure Haman was safe.

He was soon joined by Andy and Ricardo and explained to them his plans: Andy's team would follow him to find Haman, while Ricardo's team would stand by near Axis and stop any enemy mobile suits that break through.

The Federation's mobile suits performed far better than Enzo had anticipated, rendering 30% of Axis' mobile suits combat incapable. Meanwhile, Haman and her last surviving MS-06F-2 Zaku II F2 Type wing mate charged into the Federation fleet. While chasing after Haman, Char attempts to shoot down several enemy GMs, only to discover that they were using the same evasive pattern as Amuro Ray's RX-78-2 Gundam.

As Axis' mobile suit loss rate exceeds 37%, the Federation mobile suits begin attacking Axis itself. Char orders Andy and Ricardo to retreat to Axis and inform command of the counter strategy, realizing that the replication of Amuro's abilities could not have been perfect. At Char's suggestion, Enzo reluctantly pulls back all mobile suits to Axis itself for defense. As Char anticipated, the Federation mobile suits prove far less effective in close combat, shifting the battle in Axis' favor.

Realizing Axis' change in strategy, the Federation fleet commander orders the fleet to advance on Axis. This allows Haman to finally locate the Federation fleet and charge toward it. Just then, a Musai from the wreckage fleet launches a suicide charge on the Federation fleet and is quickly destroyed. The explosion destroys all of the Schnee Weiss' remaining funnels, leaving it defenseless. Haman detaches the Schnee Weiss' heavy Psycommu device, only to find her mobile suit paralyzed by a system error.

At the last instant, Char arrives in the Zero GR, protects Haman from the Federation fleet's barrage using its I-Field. Using a bluff, Char forces the fleet commander to surrender, ending the attack. However, the Salamis-class cruiser Hampton ignores the surrender order, turns around and leaves.
