Gundam Vs Gundam Next is the sequel to the original Gundam Vs Gundam arcade game, released in March 18, 2009. As part of the franchise's 30th Anniversary Project, the series features Gundams from all of the animated series and movies as well as several OVAs. The game was later followed up by an updated release on the Playstation Portable called Gundam Vs Gundam Next PLUS which features additional units. The game's theme song is a remix of Soldiers of Sorrow, the trademark song played at the Battle of Jaburo, a similar remix played during the Perfect Mission video which celebrated the franchise's history.

Gameplay

The game features improvements and additions to the gameplay established by the previous Gundam Vs. games. Mobile suits with shields can now manually defend against attacks by pressing down and then quickly pressing up. The shields themselves are invincible and can withstand an unlimited amount of attacks. The next most important addition is the Next Dash, which allows players to perform a sudden boost in any direction. This action also doubles as a cancel maneuver, significantly reducing the cooldown time on beam weapon intervals and to extend melee combos. The G-Crossover feature however, was removed. The arcade mode was also expanded to not only include more routes, but allows players to branch off int other routes upon success, represented as either Alpha, Beta or Gamma. Typically, if the player completes a mission without incurring losses, or receives a high enough score, an additional "NEXT" route can be unlocked which provides a much harder challenge. One other addition is the inclusion of non-playable bosses, usually represented as various Mobile Armors or similarly huge entities. Clearing the game through the NEXT route will open up a second final boss battle with an enhanced ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam. The game also features its own Mission Mode in the form of NEXT-PLUS which has the player take unique challenges and conditions as well as reliving the events of iconic events in the shows.
