PMX-003 The O(ジ・O,Jii Oh) is a fictional mobile suit from the anime series Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam.
Role in plot
The is the last of four mobile suits built by Paptimus Scirocco on the Jupitris, The O is Scirocco’s personal mobile suit and perhaps the most powerful. It has very thick armor that could withstand direct beam from AMX-004 Qubeley's funnel. Although very bulky and heavy The O is outfitted with enough thrusters to maneuver and fly at very high speed. In terms of weapons The O only features 4 beam swords and an optional beam rifle. However thanks to its unique sub-arms, The O could wield all four swords at once, something that no other Mobile Suit could do. The last special feature of The O however is the bio sensor (which was first installed in the MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam), which functions like a psycommu system and allows the powerful Newtype Scirocco to more easily interface with his suit.
The O was first fielded in the last days of the Gryps Conflict where it has a big battle with Kamille Bidan’s Zeta Gundam. Despite Scirocco’s great Newtype powers and the strength of The O, he is finally defeated by Kamille who rams the Zeta Gundam in waverider form in The O’s cockpit, impaling Scirocco on its tip. However before he is defeated, Scirocco uses the bio sensor to cripple Kamille’s mind.
Design Philosophy
Although Gundam series is fictional, it is often debated as to why Scirocco rode a Heavy-class Mobile Suit like The O in the realm of outer space. Oddly enough, it also had no transformation feature like many other suits made by Scirocco. The Gundam series has always had a reasonable degree of realism (or perhaps a better word would be consistency) in its design aesthetics that The O seemingly did not follow. However, The O is still a relatively popular mech due to its ferocious speed despite its bulk, and its hidden arm gimmicks that allow it to wield up to four beam sabers at once. Its name "The-O", seems to be derived from the Greek root "Theos", or the Italian word "Dio", meaning "God", which keeps with the Greco-Roman theme that Scirocco, who was born in Rome, Italy, used in naming his creations.
