The Principality of Zeon was the name adopted by the residents of Side 3 after Degwin Zabi took control of the Republic of Zeon. It is also referred to as the Duchy of Zeon or the Zeon Dukedom. An extremely powerful and fanatical entity, the Principality of Zeon took control of Side 3 on August 15, UC 0069, shortly after the death of Zeon Zum Deikun. Headed by Degwin Zabi, and run by his four children (Gihren Zabi, Kycilia Zabi, Dozle Zabi, and Garma Zabi) the Principality of Zeon held that the only way for the Space Colonies to be completely free and independent of the Earth Federation was through war. To that end the Principality undertook rapid development of military technology, introducing among other things the mobile suit and the Minovsky particle effect.

In 0079, the Pricipality of Zeon declared war against the Earth Federation, and within one week had destroyed some of the colony bunches in Side 1, Side 2, and Side 4. Side 5 was detroyed at the battle of loum. The Zeon were also responsible for the first ever colony drop, which eliminated 16% of Australia's land mass. Through the spring and into the summer the Zeon forces fought the Federation to a stalemate, until the Zeon were slowed pushed off the earth in September and October UC 0079. In December the Principality of Zeon, having lost its leader and all four of the Zabi children, and having suffered crippling defeats at both Soloman and A Baoa Qu, formally and unconditionally surrendered to the Federation.

Although the Principality of Zeon had ceased to exist, several thousand Principality loyalists had managed to evade capture by the Federation, and over the next fourteen years these groups would reorganize into two separate Neo-Zeon movements.
