Psycommu (サイコミュ Saikomyu?), short for Psycho Communicator[1] or Psycho Communication System,[2] was a type of man-machine interface that utilized the psycho waves emitted by Newtypes. Since it used Minovsky particles as its medium, it was unaffected by Minovsky particle interference.[3]

Overview[]

Minovsky particles disrupted electromagnetic waves, rendering long-range communications and the use of guided weapons impossible under Minovsky interference. However, it was discovered that there was a pattern to the distortion effect that Minovsky particles had on electronic communications. By studying this pattern, it was determined that communication using Minovsky particles as medium was possible.[3]

Psycommu functioned by receiving and amplifying the psycho waves emitted by its user, then translating them into machine language. Since the source of the communication had to be psycho waves, it was difficult to use psycommu for conversations, as with standard communication systems. However, it could easily be used to transmit the user's "will" or "intention", such as aiming and firing a beam cannon. Strictly speaking, it was unclear whether psycho waves were transmitted through space or through resonance between devices.[3]

Psycommu was initially used as the control system for remote attack terminals on mobile weapons. Two types of such weapons existed: wired type and wireless type. The wired type was notably usable even by those with low Newtype aptitudes.[4] Some later Psycommu systems were used to assist in the control of the mobile weapon itself.

Controlling Psycommu weapons places mental strain on the user, leading to symptoms such as headache after prolonged use.[5] The strain is proportional to the operational complexity and number of the weapons.[6] The MRX-010 Psycho Gundam Mk-II's Reflector Bits, for example, were said to place heavy mental strain on the pilot due to their complex controls.[7]

As Psycommu technology advanced, numerous variants of the system with different or additional functions, such as Bio-Sensor, Psycho-Frame, and Bio Computer were developed. The development of Psycommu technology also led to the creation of a system that allowed normal humans to use wire-guided weaponry, the Quasi-Psycommu System.

Psycommu-equipped mobile weapons are sometimes called "Psycho Machine".[8]

History[]

One Year War[]

The first Psycommu prototype was completed by the Principality of Zeon's Flanagan Institute in October, U.C. 0079,[9] as a means to allow the use of wireless guided weapons under Minovsky particle interference.[2] Zeon developed and deployed several Psycommu-equipped mobile weapons during the One Year War. However, due to the large size of the Psycommu system, it was initially limited to mobile armors.[10]

One such mobile armor was the MAN-03 Braw Bro, a testbed for the Psycommu system. It was armed with four wire-guided mega particle cannon turrets, allowing it to perform all-range attacks. Notably, it was usable by non-Newtype pilots, though doing so required a crew of three.[11] The data it collected proved valuable for the development of the MAN-08 Elmeth and the MSN-02 Zeong.[12]

The Elmeth was the first Newtype-use mobile armor designed for actual combat. Both the mobile armor and its weapons were controlled using the Psycommu system. Its greatest feature was its wireless Psycommu weapons known as Bits. Each Bit contained a beam cannon, a reactor, numerous vernier thrusters, and a monoeye. The image received by the monoeye is transmitted to the pilot via Psycommu.[13] Following the fall of Solomon, the Elmeth ambushed the Federation Forces at the space fortress using its Bits, sinking multiple cruisers. Since the attacks seemingly came out of nowhere, rumors spread among Federation soldiers that they were caused by the "Ghost of Solomon".[14]

To collect data for a Psycommu-equipped mobile suit codenamed "MS-16X Zeong", Zeon developed three testbed units: a medium fighter, the mobile armor Braw Bro, and finally, the MS-06Z Psycommu System Zaku, a Psycommu-equipped MS-06F Zaku II. Developed in parallel with the Braw Bro as part of the "Bishop Plan", the MS-06Z was equipped with a pair of wire-guided arms with a beam cannon in each finger,[15] a miniaturized version of the Braw Bro's wire-guided beam cannons.[16]

A total of three MS-06Z were produced. However, it was discovered during testing that their mobility were insufficient. As such, Unit 2 was refitted with enhanced thrusters. As the MS-16X's model number was changed to MSN, the modified Unit 2 was given the new model number of MSN-01. The new thrusters greatly improved its mobility, but also increased its propellant consumption, making it unsuitable for actual combat, and it did not enter mass production.[15]

Developed based on data from the MS-06Z and the MSN-01,[17] the MSN-02 Zeong was much larger than standard mobile suits due to the size of its Psycommu system.[10] It was equipped with the same wire-guided forearm beam cannons as the MS-06Z, as well as an array of beam weapons on its body.[17]

By the time of the Battle of A Baoa Qu, the final battle of the war, the Zeong was only 80% complete, with its upper arm armor and legs still uninstalled. However, its leg sockets also served as vernier thrusters, allowing them to replace its legs during space combat.[18] During the battle, Zeon ace pilot Char Aznable sortied in the Zeong and engaged in a fierce battle with the RX-78-2 Gundam, ultimately resulting in the destruction of both mobile suits.[19]

There also existed plans for a MSN-03 Zeong, which was supposed to be equipped with a wireless Psycommu system and be able to separate its head, torso, arms, waist, and legs into seven parts and perform all-range attacks with beam cannons, but development never began before the war ended.[17]

Post-One Year War and Gryps War[]

Following the end of the One Year War, the Earth Federation Forces took over most of the former Principality's military facilities, including the Flanagan Institute and its research on Psycommu. However, due to fears of the Newtype's power, all information was locked down. Anaheim Electronics Director O'Sullivan, realizing the potential of it and the Bishop Plan that Zeon started, collaborated with the Cima Fleet to derail Operation Stardust and to force the Federation to reopen all research into Newtypes. The plan proved to be a success as while Operation Stardust was completed, the colony drop prompted the Federation to reopen all research into Newtypes.[20] It soon established the Murasame and Augusta Newtype Research Institutes to continue the development of Psycommu. In addition, due to the scarcity of Newtype research subjects following the war, these facilities also began developing artificial Newtypes known as Cyber Newtypes.[3][21]

The Murasame Lab eventually created the MRX-009 Psycho Gundam - a massive Psycommu-equipped transformable mobile armor based on the Zeong's development data. Its successor, the MRX-010 Psycho Gundam Mk-II, was equipped with various Psycommu weapons, such as Reflector Bits and wire-guided mega particle cannons. However, their Psycommu systems were incomplete and destroyed the minds of many of their pilots.[21]

Due to the strain that Psycommu placed on the pilot, the Federation classified Psycommu and its related technologies as top level military secret, making it impossible for civilian enterprises to publicly develop Psycommu-related technology. Even for the defense industry, obtaining Psycommu technology was difficult. However, due to the difficulty of tracking every scientist involved in Psycommu development, as well as information leaks from the Newtype Labs, the concept and basic functions of the Psycommu eventually became widely known. Because of these information leaks, which were possibly intentional on the part of the EFF, several civilian enterprises, including Anaheim Electronics, obtained information on Psycommu. This allowed AE to develop a pseudo-Psycommu device known as the Bio-Sensor, which was installed on the MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam and the MSZ-010 ΖΖ Gundam to assist with their control systems.[2]

Meanwhile, the Zeon Remnants that escaped to the asteroid base Axis continued the development of Psycommu, eventually producing the Newtype-use mobile suit AMX-004 Qubeley. Based on the mobile armor Elmeth from the One Year War,[22] the Qubeley featured a miniaturized Psycommu device that placed less strain on the pilot, allowing more Bit weapons to be used at the same time.[6]

During the Gryps War, the Augusta Lab developed the Quasi-Psycommu System, which could be used by pilots without Newtype abilities. At the request of the Titans, they went on to develop the ORX-013 Gundam Mk-V, a mobile suit equipped with wire-guided Quasi-Psycommu weapons known as INCOMs. Following the Gryps War, one unit was sent to Axis by Dr. Loren Nakamoto of Murasame Lab, becoming the basis for the AMX-014 Döven Wolf.[23]

First Neo Zeon War[]

By the time of the First Neo Zeon War, Axis Zeon, now reformed into Neo Zeon, had raced ahead of the Federation in terms of Psycommu technology. This was due to them recovering the wreckage of the Psycho Gundam Mk-II, which was left adrift in space during the Gryps War, allowing them to incorporate technologies used by the Federation Forces into their own Psycommu research.[24]

It was during this period that the 4th generation of mobile suits came to be: mobile suits equipped with thermonuclear reactors that were far more powerful than their predecessors, high-powered mega particle cannons (or "hi-mega cannons" for short) as fixed weapons, and a Psycommu system that was safe for low level Newtype pilots to control.[24]

During the war, Neo Zeon deployed multiple 4th generation mobile suits, including the Döven Wolf and the AMX-015 Geymalk. The former was equipped with INCOMs and wire-guided mega arms, which were usable even by non-Newtype pilots. The latter required a high level of Newtype ability, but was still far easier to control than previous Psycommu-equipped mobile suits, like Qubeley. It was said that due to Neo Zeon's costly yet successful mass production of Newtype-use mobile suits, the Federation Forces and AEUG would have lost the war had it not been for Glemy Toto's rebellion.[24]

Second Neo Zeon War[]

Main article: Psycho-Frame Prior to the outbreak of the Second Neo Zeon War in U.C. 0093, the Newborn Neo Zeon led by Char Aznable developed Psycho-Frame, a new material made by forging computer chips with Psycommu capabilities (known as "Psycho Chips") into a mobile suit's frame at the metallic particle level.[25][26] This allowed the size of a mobile suit's Psycommu system to be greatly reduced, saving a large amount of space.[26] In addition, since the pilot's will could be directly transmitted to the drive system, the use of Psycho-Frame around the cockpit greatly increased a mobile suit's responsiveness.[26][27]

Though Psycho-Frame was invented by Neo Zeon, Char intentionally leaked the technology to the Federation through Anaheim Electronic's Granada plant,[26][26] allowing their Von Braun plant to produce the Psycho-Frame-equipped RX-93 ν Gundam for the Federation's Londo Bell task force.[27]

CCA Axis Shock

During the climax of the Second Neo Zeon War, Char attempted to crash Axis into Earth to cause a nuclear winter. As Amuro Ray attempted to push back the Axis using the ν Gundam, with the cockpit of Char's MSN-04 Sazabi in hand, an unknown glowing force caused the Axis to be pushed away from Earth and both pilots vanished. Though details were unclear, it was believed that the Psycho-Frame resonance between the ν Gundam and Sazabi's cockpit generated a Psycho-Field that materialized the collective will of billions of humans. This event was later termed "Axis Shock".[28]

Laplace Incident[]

As its name suggested, the Axis Shock was a great shock to the Earth Federation Forces: Psycho-Frame, the unknown material initially thought to be nothing more than a component for mobile suits proved to have the power to move planetary bodies. In an attempt to learn how to control and use this power, the EFF initiated the UC Project,[28] a top secret mobile suit development project under the Earth Federation Space Force reorganization plan,[29] in U.C. 0094.[30] In truth, however, the reorganization plan only served as a cover for the UC Project.[29]

In order to ensure the practicality of Psycho-Frame, the test unit MSN-06S Sinanju Stein was produced.[30] In addition to Psycho-Frame, it was also equipped with the Intention Automatic System,[31] a Psycommu-based thought control system that translates the pilot's thoughts into the mobile suit's actions.[32][33] After testing was completed, two Sinanju Stein units were transferred to the Neo Zeon remnants nicknamed the Sleeves under the guise of a heist. One of the two units was later modified into the MSN-06S Sinanju and piloted by the Sleeves leader Full Frontal.[34]

The RX-0 series, the flagship units of the UC Project, each featured a movable frame that was entirely composed of Psycho-Frame. Combined with the application of magnet coating to its joints and the Intention Automatic System, their responsiveness were theoretically unlimited.[29][33] However, due to the massive G-force caused by moving at such high speed and the mental strain caused by the full Psycho-Frame, their performance were usually restricted by limiters.[29]

The RX-0 series were all equipped with a special operating system known as NT-D System. During combat, the RX-0's "horn" would act as a high-powered directional radar that detects enemy psycho waves. Once it detects the presence of enemy Psycho Machines, the NT-D System would deactivate the limiters, causing the RX-0 to transform into the close-combat high mobility form known as Destroy Mode.[28] Due to the massive strain on the pilot, Destroy Mode could only remain active for five minutes.[29] In addition, thanks to the high computing power of its full Psycho-Frame, the RX-0 was capable of deciphering the Minovsky communication used by enemy Psycommu weapons and take control of them.[35] This ability was termed "Psycommu Jack" by Mineva Lao Zabi.[30]

Unsatisifed with Anaheim Electronics' involvement in the UC Project, the EFF assembled their own RX-0, the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 03 Phenex, using an experimental full psycho-frame and based on the construction data of RX-0 Unit 1 and Unit 2. However, During a test on December 3, U.C. 0095, the Phenex went berserk, destroyed the observing Federation battleship, and vanished.[36]

During the Laplace Incident, the Sleeves deployed the YAMS-132 Rozen Zulu, which was equipped with a unique type of anti-Psycommu weapon known as Psycho Jammers. These weapons disrupted enemy psycho waves by emitting more powerful psycho waves, and could forcefully deactivate the Unicorn Gundam's Destroy Mode.[30]

Near the end of the Laplace Incident, Full Frontal revealed the NZ-999 Neo Zeong, a massive mobile armor that used the Sinanju as its core unit. The Neo Zeong was equipped with a unique Psycommu weapon known as the Psycho Shard generator, allowing it to enhance the Sinanju's Psycho-Frame functions, generating a pseudo Psycho Field, a phenomenon similar to the one that caused the Axis Shock. Within this field, the pilot was able to materialize their will, accomplishing feats such as disabling the weapons of enemy mobile suits and even projecting visions of the past and the future.[37][38]

The Neo Zeong's core technology, including the Psycho Shard, were all blackboxed. As such, not even the Sleeves or their secret backer, the Republic of Zeon, understood how it functioned. It was rumored that Full Frontal, who was possessed by the ghost of Char Aznable, built it using knowledge not of this world.[39]

After the Unicorn Gundam and its sibling unit, the Banshee, blocked a shot from Gryps 2 colony laser with psycho-fields, the Unicorn's entire body began transforming into Psycho-Frame material. In this state, the Unicorn demonstrated the ability to disable an entire army of mobile suits with a wave of its hand, reverting their reactor to the state before they were assembled.[39] The conciousness of its pilot, Banagher Links, was seemingly absorbed by the mobile suit before being called back by his friends, causing the Unicorn to revert back to its normal state.[40]

Post-Laplace Incident and Operation Phoenix Hunt[]

During the Laplace Incident, the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam demonstrated numerous unusual abilities, eventually becoming something beyond human understanding. Because of this, it was codenamed "Singularity One" because of its potential to fundamentally change the human society.[39][41]

A secret agreement was reached between Mineva's faction and the Federation: mobile suits like the Unicorn must never be used again. As part of this agreement, both the Unicorn and the Banshee were dismantled in the presence of inspectors and sealed away.[39][41] In addition, a complete ban on the research, production, and development of Psycho-Frame was instituted.[41] In truth, however, the Unicorn was still intact and sealed away in the Magallanica.[39]

Following the Laplace Incident, the EFF captured the NZ-999 II Neo Zeong, a mobile armor constructed by the Sleeves from the spare parts of the original Neo Zeong. Luio & Co. special advisor Michele Luio arranged for the II Neo Zeong to be transferred to the Republic of Zeon military.[42] Apparently because of this, the Phenex, possessed by the spirit of its test pilot Rita Bernal, resurfaced. It worked to eliminate the II Neo Zeong, believing that it was something that should not exist in the world.[39]

In response, the EFF General Staff Headquarters launched Operation Phoenix Hunt, assembling the elite Shezarr Unit aboard the Clop-class cruiser Damascus to recapture the Phenex. Through her connections, Michele forcefully joined the operation, intending to capture the Phenex using her own assets. Meanwhile, the Republic of Zeon also launched an operation to capture the Phenex, with Foreign Minister Monaghan Bakharov assigning the II Neo Zeong to the capture team as their trump card, with the second Sinanju Stein serving as its core unit. In order to conceal the Republic's involvement, the team disguised themselves as Sleeves remnants.[39][42]

During an attempt by the Shezarr Unit to capture the Phenex, the RX-9/A Narrative Gundam A-Packs, piloted by Federation soldier Jona Basta, a childhood friend of Michele, abruptly joined the pursuit. Despite its tremendous speed and specialized "Psycho Capture" weapons, however, the Narrative Gundam ultimately failed to capture the Phenex. Following this encounter, Jona and Michele joined the Shezarr Unit on their mission.[39]

Using "psycho monitors" that provided falsified readings, Michele drew both teams to the Side 6 colony Metis, causing a battle that resulted in massive collateral damage and numerous civilian casualties. As she expected, the battle drew the Phenex to the colony. However, when Republic of Zeon Cyber Newtype Zoltan Akkanen summoned the II Neo Zeong, Jona took over the massive mobile armor using Psycommu Jack and nearly blew up the colony before being stopped by the Phenex. Michele's plan to capture the Phenex once again failed, but not before Rita told Jona of her intention to destroy the II Neo Zeong, enlisting his help in doing so.[39]

Following the battle, the Damascus crew confronted Michele, who revealed that she was responsible for the II Neo Zeong and arranging the battle at Metis. She also revealed her intention with the Phenex: she believed that if human soul could be transplanted into a Psycho-Frame, studying the Phenex would allow humanity to achieve immortality and travel through space in their new bodies.[39]

The battle at Metis was soon publicized by the news media, causing the EFF to abort the operation. However, after Zoltan destroyed a Federation fleet in Side 6's helium storage base with the II Neo Zeong, Jona engaged him in the RX-9/C Narrative Gundam C-Packs alongside the Phenex.[39]

Eventually, Jona jumped into the Phenex's cockpit and impaled the II Neo Zeong's cockpit, killing Zoltan. Zoltan's spirit attempted to detonate all of the helium storage tanks and cause a catastrophic accident that would destroy the nearby colonies and devastate Earth. However, the Phenex somehow erased the II Neo Zeong from existence and prevented the tanks from going critical before departing at light speed. As the incident reached its conclusion, Mineva Lao Zabi remarked that Psycho-Frame was still too much for humanity to handle and it would be their life's work to seal it away.[39]

Later Uses[]

In U.C. 0123, Crossbone Vanguard leader Carozzo Ronah deployed the mobile armor XMA-01 Rafflesia, which was equipped with the "Neo-Psycommu System", a Psycommu variant developed by Carozzo. Through optical fibers connected to his helmet, Carozzo was able to control the Rafflesia through thoughts alone.[43]

The Zanscare Empire possessed a Newtype research institute called Super Psycho Laboratory, which conducted research relating to Cyber Newtypes and Psycommu, though details about the institute was scarce.

Variants and related technologies[]

EXAM System[]

The EXAM System was a mobile suit support system developed by Flanagan Institute scientist Chlust Moses. Originally intended to give Oldtype pilots the combat abilities of a Newtype, it was transformed into a weapon to eliminate Newtypes as Moses grew to fear them and came to believe that they were the enemies of Oldtypes. Its core component was the soul of Marion Whelch, a Zeon Newtype who was rendered comatose after an accident during testing.

When activated, the EXAM System greatly improved the performance of the mobile suit. However, the system was notoriously unstable and prone to going berserk when it detected a Newtype or another EXAM-equipped mobile suit, causing the mobile suit to lose control and attack friends and foes alike, though this could be somewhat mitigated with a limiter.

Quasi-Psycommu[]

Main article: Quasi-Psycommu The Quasi-Psycommu system was a variant of the Psycommu system, designed for non-Newtypes in mind. The Quasi-Psycommu would be able to read anyone's brainwaves, no matter how weak, and translate it into computer code to allow the system to transmit instructions to devices using it. However, because of this, this required wired tethers to allow the system to perform what it needed to do. A predecessor of this came from the AMX-002 Neue Ziel and its Half-control system from Axis Zeon. A flawed version of this would appear with the AMX-103 Hamma Hamma before they were able to acquire the ORX-013 Gundam Mk-V, allowing them to perfect it with the AMX-014 Döven Wolf.

Bio-Sensor[]

The Bio-Sensor was described as either a simplified Psycommu or a quasi-Psycommu device. Developed by Anaheim Electronics, it was intended to support the mobile suit's control system using the pilot's brainwaves, thereby improving the mobile suit's responsiveness. When piloted by pilots with low Newtype aptitude, a protection mechanism would prevent the system from activating.[2][44]

The first Bio-Sensor was secretly installed on the MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam, and an improved version was later installed on the MSZ-010 ZZ Gundam. On multiple occasions, the Bio-Sensor on these two mobile suits allowed them to demonstrate powers and abilities beyond their specifications. However, these abilities could not be controlled by the pilot at will.[2]

Psycho Neutralizer[]

The Psycho Neutralizer was a unique Psycommu system used by the MSZ-006-P2/3C Zeta Gundam P2/3C Type (also known as "Red Zeta"). Though details about the system was unclear, when activated, it was able to synchornize the Red Zeta with the pilot's motions, allowing them to move as one. It was also able to project a protective beam barrier around the Red Zeta and take control of enemy Psycommu weapons, similar to the "Psycommu Jack" ability of the later NT-D System.[45]

Demon Blade System[]

The Demon Blade System was a Psycommu AI system developed by former BGST leader Kanesada Tsurugi. It was based on a martial arts training method invented by Kanesada's father, Muramasa Tsurugi, as well as the NEO EXAM System, an incomplete recreation of the EXAM System. Similar to the EXAM System, it was located in the mobile suit's head.

The Demon Blade System enabled the mobile suit using it to emit superoscillation waves similar to Psycho Waves, allowing the mobile suit to turn any matter it touched into dust in a recreation of the ultimate technique of the Tsurugi style iaido. In addition, since the sytem incorporated Kanesada's Cyber Newtype research and was based on the brainwaves of his son Ittou Tsurugi, its waves could hasten the awekning of Newtypes.

However, since Ittou harbored a strong hatred of his father, the sytem had the risk of going berserk and activating the "Super Demon Blade System" if it detected anything created by Kanesada, namely other copies of the Demon Blade System or Cyber Newtypes, similar to the EXAM System. In this state, the AI would forcibly take control of the mobile suit, even if there was no pilot inside. In this berserk style, the superoscillation waves were so powerful that they could break the mobile suit and the pilot down to atoms.

The Demon Blade System had a third and final mode, the "Katana System". Little was known about this mode, other than that activating system allowed the FA-79FC Full Armor Striker Custom to cut an entire sub-colony in half.

Following the defeat of True Federal, the Demon Blade System was incorporated into the Psycho Gundam.

Intention Automatic System[]

The Intention Automatic System was a Psycommu-based man-machine interface that directly transferred a Newtype pilot's intentions to the mobile suit's Psycho-Frame, allowing movement without delay. This system greatly improved a mobile suit's mobility and responsiveness over conventional control methods, and could be said to be the ultimate man-machine interface. However, it also placed a great strain on the pilot.

The Unicorn Gundam's Intention Automatic System was only active in Destroy Mode. In addition to serving as the control system, it could also assist with aiming by responding to the pilot's thoughts of the target.

n_i_t_r_o System[]

The n_i_t_r_o (newtype injection trace reformed oldtype) System was a Psycommu system that granted Newtype abilities to Oldtype pilots.[46] The greatest feature of the system was that when active, it caused the affected unit's drive system to emit what appeared to be blue flames.[47] The system was originally developed in U.C. 0087 by the Titans, to allow the Psycho Gundam to operate more smoothly. However, the early n_i_t_r_o test units were deeply flawed, "burning through" their pilots and reducing them to a vegetative state after a single use. In U.C. 0094, an improved version of the n_i_t_r_o System was installed on the MSN-001X Gundam Delta Kai. While this version no longer "burned through" its pilot, prolonged use would cause the pilot's personality to become more violent and aggressive.

Neo-Psycommu

The Neo-Psycommu System was a thought control system independently developed by Carozzo Ronah, based on his research on machine control and thought sensor before he joined the Crossbone Vangaurd. Through a series of optical fibers connected to his helmet, the system allowed Carozzo to control the mobile armor Rafflesia and its array of weapons using only his thoughts.[43]

  • The Intention Automatic System was a direct reference to the control system of the same name used by Ideon in Space Runaway Ideon.
