The RGM-79L GM Light Armor is a variant of the original RGM-79 GM. It first appears in the Mobile Suit Variations series.

Technology & Combat Characteristics

The Federation soon learned that standardizing RGM-79 GM mobile suit gave it some distinct advantages and disadvantages. The GM outclassed its Zaku opponents in terms of firepower, but lacked performance in key areas against Zeons more advanced suits such as the deadly MS-09 Dom.

One of the first variants designed to counter this was developed during the latter part of U.C. 0079 and served as a fast attack unit for hit-and-run raids. This new Mobile suit was dubbed the RGM-79L GM Light Armor. In reality, the GM Light Armor was really just a rebuild of the standard GM with only the bare minimum of armor (notably missing on the shoulders and ankles), thus reducing its weight and giving it more acceleration and maneuverability than a standard GM. The armaments of GM Light Armor were a beam saber, beam rifle(similar in design to the RX-78-2 Gundam's beam rifle) and a beam spray gun. For unknown reasons the head vulcan guns were omitted. Due to its light weight and nimbleness this variant was favored by many of the Federal Forces' ex-Fighter pilots.

Armaments

  • Beam Saber
The standard close range armament for most Federation mobile suits. The beam saber is a small cylindrical device held in the mobile suit's hands when operated and is powered by an energy capacitor that is recharged from special racks. The beam saber is capable of cutting through any metal that has not been treated with anti-beam coating. The GM Light Armor is equipped with one beam saber stored in a backpack recharge rack.
  • Beam Spray Gun
The Beam Spray Gun was essentially the Gundam's beam rifle in a smaller weaker form. The beam spray gun has a smaller focusing coil which results in a less powerful, and a more scattered shot. As a result of this the beam spray gun is less effective at long range, but is better at close range due to a more spread out shot, similar to a shotgun effect. While the beam spray gun is less powerful than the beam rifle, it has been shown to be able to penetrate the armor of a Rick Dom - one of the most heavily armored mobile suits of the One Year War.
  • Custom Beam Rifle
The beam rifle model carried by the GM Light Armor type was similar to that of the RX-78-2 Gundam's beam rifle, packing a heavier punch than the beam spray gun, but paying the price in more limited ammunition.

History

In the race to adapt its standard RGM-79 GM mobile suit for specialized roles during the latter days of the One Year War, the Earth Federation Forces created a GM variant designed to serve as a fast attack unit for hit-and-run raids, the RGM-79L GM Light Armor. Due to its light weight and nimbleness, the GM Light Armor was favored by many of the Federation Forces' former-fighter-pilots-turned-MS-pilots, particularly Captain Gary Rogers.

Notes & Trivia

  • In Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Operation, The GM Light Armor is classified as a close-combat specialist unit, meaning it can attack with the beam saber for upwards of 3 well-timed hits.
