The Tivvay-class heavy cruiser (also known as the Chivvay-class Final Production Type), is an improved version of Chivvay-class heavy cruiser. The class first appears in the OVA Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

It is said that the ship which was greatly modified based on the Chivvay-class and is designed around MS transportation and combat. The anti-aircraft guns are now retractable for protection, though this slows down their ability to rapidly engage an enemy threat at close ranges. The number of missile launchers was reduced to four, mounted on the lower hull in a forward firing position. While there was a smaller number of turrets, the output of the mega particle guns was increased thanks to the offset.

The primary thermonuclear rocket engine was also improved significantly in thrust, and is supported by an additional eight thrusters to further bolster its rate of acceleration. Supporting this large cluster of thruster were a pair of smaller thrusters on each side of the vessel midship, which were set up with a pair of retrograde engines for delectation and a set of small thrusters pointing up and down on each side of the ship, which provided some degree of maneuverability. While very capable as a warship, it still fell short of matching a battleship’s firepower and leaned closer to a mobile suit mothership and a fleet command vessel.

In addition, the operational capability of its onboard MS was also improved due to the Tivvay’s purpose built accommodations for mobile suits - a shortcoming fixed from the Chivvay-class, which was a warship converted to carry MS. The mobile suit deck has been expanded for more efficiency in terms of maintenance and repair capability, and a pair of launch catapults have been installed at the bow - able to deploy its mobile suits more quickly. it was also designed around operations of considerably longer distance - as its storage bay was spacious and capable of sustaining its crew and MS complement for much longer while also being able to carry other items such as nuclear weapons.

Armaments[]

  • Triple Mega Particle Gun
The primary weapons of the Tivvay-class are a pair of tri-barreled beam turrets. One is in front of the bridge tower, with another mounted midship, just aft of the bridge tower. Compared to the mega particle guns of its predecessors, the output of these triple mega particle guns is significantly higher than the Chivvay-class's.
  • Missile Launcher
The Tivvay-class has four missile launchers quipped on the lower bow of the ship, two on each side.
  • Twin Anti-Aircraft Gun
The secondary weapons of the Tivvay-class, these weapons serve primarily as anti-air/mobile suit defense weapons. This ship class's twin anti-aircraft turrets have the ability to retract into the hull when not in combat.
  • Nuclear Missile
The Tivvay-class can carry nuclear missiles onboard its main hangar bay, though it is unknown if they are able to launch them directly from its hangar.

History[]

One known Tivvay-class cruiser is the Graf Zeppelin in U.C. 0080. This vessel served as a flagship for Von Helsing and his small Zeon taskforce, who were assigned to Operation Rubicon and dispatched with orders to rendezvous with Zeon's elite Cyclops commando unit. Graf Zeppelin and her two Musai-class escorts, the Seigried and Valkerie, were to launch a diversionary attack on Side 6 to allow the Cyclops team entry. Later, these same three ships were used to ferry nuclear arms to Side 6 in anticipation of firing on Side 6's Ribo Colony, which housed a Federation R&D base containing the RX-78NT-1 Gundam NT-1. However, the Graf Zeppelin and her two escorts were intercepted by a Federation patrol in the vicinity of Side 6 before they could use the nuclear weapons, and surrendered to the Federation in late December U.C. 0079.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • The name Graf Zepplin may be in reference to the World War II German aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin, however that has not been confirmed.
  • Some publications list this ship type as a cruiser or a heavy cruiser, while other cite the vessel as a battleship, leaving some speculation as to what exactly this ships official classification is.
  • The number of anti-aircraft gun turrets on the Tivvay-class is unknown, as its never shown with the turrets out in the open.
  • The size of the Tivvay has been controversial, as the vessel seen is shown to be three times the size of a Pazock-class. This puts the vessel at nearly 800 meters in length, which differs from the size comparison to the mobile suits it’s been shown to launch - which suggests it to be closer to 400-500 meters in length when comparing the ship’s bow to the mobile suits.
