The Junius Treaty is a peace treaty that officially ends the First Alliance-PLANT War. It was introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny.

Overview[]

The Junius Treaty specifically outlined several points:

  • All national boundaries on Earth had to be restored to status quo ante bellum. Thus both the Orb Union and the United States of South America, which were seized by the Alliance, became independent nations again. Also, ZAFT had to leave the areas they conquered during the war. However, they were allowed to operate the Gibraltar and the Carpentaria Base on Earth.
  • Neither side would pay war reparations.
  • Instead of an international tribunal, each side would try its own war criminals.
  • Preferential tariffs for former PLANT sponsors.
  • Nuclear technologies (Neutron Jammers and Neutron Jammer Cancellers) are prohibited from military use.
  • Mirage Colloid technology is prohibited from military use.
  • The moon is considered neutral territory, with both sides having the same number of bases.
  • Foreign Minister Lindemann of the Kingdom of Scandinavia proposed, in the Lindemann Plan, that strict limits be placed on the number of ships, mobile suits, and mobile armors that could be owned by either nation. The armament limits imposed on each nation by the Lindemann Plan are proportional to national resources such as population and economic output, thus placing the PLANTs at a substantial military disadvantage.

History[]

Following the Second Battle of Jachin Due, the Earth Alliance and PLANT Supreme Council formally began to discuss peace negotiations to end the First Alliance-PLANT War during the Nairobi Peace Conference. During the conference, several regulations were adopted, including limitations placed on both factions' military power and the return of neutral nations to their pre-war state. These laws were incorporated into the Junius Treaty, which was signed on March 10, C.E. 72 at the ruins of Junius Seven.

The Treaty would disproportionally harm ZAFT and the PLANTs through the Lindemann Plan military-wise. However, to cope with this, ZAFT introduced the ZAFT Armed Keeper of Unity series and the Second Stage Series of Gundam-types.

However, despite such far-reaching changes, the treaty failed on one major angle: the curbing or outright elimination of extremist factions such as Blue Cosmos. Because of this, the group was able to reignite war following the Attack on Armory One.

As of the end of the Second Alliance-PLANT War, it is unknown if the Treaty remains in effect or if it has been modified.
