Technology and Combat Characteristics
As the newest model in the amphibious mobile suit series of ZAFT, the ASH is heavily armed. On its back two GMF22SX prototype propeller and multipurpose missile launchers are mounted, allowing the suit to fire a large number of missiles on its enemies. Each shoulder mounts two MA-M1217R high-energy beam cannons, while each forearm mounts a M47 23mm dual machine gun. Like other underwater use mobile suits, the ASH is equipped with a Type PJP3 dual phonon maser cannon. Lastly each forearm mounts an MX-RQB505 beam claw which is used for close combat.

The UMF/SSO-3 ASH is ZAFT's newest amphibious mobile suit as of late CE 73. Unlike the earlier UMF-4A GOOhN and UMF-5 ZnO, which are of very limited used outside of water, the ASH is a truly amphibious unit that is nearly as effective on land as it is at sea. The SSO in the ASH's name is shorthand for Support/Special Operations, meaning that it is an exclusive unit to ZAFT special ops.
The ASH is first used in November CE 73, by a special operations force of Coordinators sent to secretly kill Lacus Clyne. They manage to destroy the Athha estate, but are thwarted by Kira Yamato in the ZGMF-X10A Freedom. To prevent themselves from being captured and interrogated, the ASH pilots all self-destruct their units. Later, several ASHs, sporting a new dark gray color scheme, are used in both the attack on LOGOS headquarters at Heaven's Base in Iceland and the invasion of Orb.
Notes & Trivia
- The ASH is similar to Universal Century MSM-07 Z'Gok, as both are amphibious mobile suits and have almost similar weapons and physical characteristics.
