The WF-02MD (OZ-03MD) Virgo II (aka Virgo II) is the successor to the unmanned OZ-02MD Virgo introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam Wing.

Technology & Combat Characteristics[]

Initially developed by the OZ as the successor to the unmanned Virgo, the Virgo II was later modified and completed by the White Fang as a mobile suit designed specifically for combat in space. The unmanned Virgo II was equipped with shoulder-mounted thruster pods, granting it better mobility than the original Virgo. It also had better defensive capabilities as it was equipped with eight planet defensors instead of its predecessor's four, expanding its defensive area. For offensive weaponry, the Virgo II was meant to correct the original Virgo's deficiency in close-to-mid range combat. As such, while it had an optional mega beam cannon for long-range attack, it was primarily armed with an easy to wield beam rifle and a pair of beam sabers.

Armaments[]

  • Beam Rifle
The main weapon of the Virgo II, it is powered by a cartridge. Although the beam rifle had a lower output than the mega beam cannon, it is easier to wield and have a higher rate of fire. The beam rifle can be stored in the storage racks of the shoulder thruster pods.[1] When required, the Virgo II can use another beam rifle for increased firepower.
  • Planet Defensor
Like its predecessor, the Virgo II is equipped with planet defensors, small disc-shaped objects which are capable of generating a defensive electromagnetic barrier capable of blocking most incoming attacks. The Virgo II has eight planet defensors, four stored on each shoulder. When low on energy, they can return to the rack on the mobile unit's shoulders for recharging.
  • Beam Saber
Unlike the Virgo, the Virgo II is outfitted with a pair of beam sabers, allowing it to perform melee attacks. The beam sabers are stored on the underside of the shoulder armor, below the shoulder joint.
  • Mega Beam Cannon
When required, the Virgo II can swap out its beam rifle for the more destructive mega beam cannon. This weapon is linked to the shoulder mounted thruster pod via a cable at the back, allowing it to draw energy from the MS.

Special Equipment & Features[]

  • Mobile Doll Operating System
Like its predecessor, the Virgo II was controlled by the mobile doll system, negating the need for a human pilot to function. Because it is a computer controlling the Virgo II, its movements lack innovation, relying on pre-programmed data to determine how it reacts in a given situation. However they were later upgraded to be incorporated into a network that connected each Virgo II to a control room within Libra where a human influenced by an Epyon style ZERO System (aka Epyon System) would relay battle orders to the mobile dolls, increasing their combat effectiveness.[2]

History[]

The OZ engineer Tubarov initiated the development of this mobile suit as a successor to his previous creation, the Virgo. Tubarov died during the battle in which White Fang took control of OZ's mobile doll lunar factory. White Fang then found his mobile suit plan, modified it to suit their needs, and then began building the new mobile doll known as WF-02MD Virgo II. With the Virgo II, the White Fang began a campaign against OZ and the Romefeller Foundation for the sake of space independence.

Once OZ's and Romefeller's presence in space was almost non-existent, White Fang's army of Virgo IIs were deployed against the Gundams in numerous battle. Despite having a numerical superiority in each battle, the abilities of the five Gundams and the skills of the Gundam pilots were too great, dealing heavy losses to White Fang's forces. During the White Fang's final operation, where they attempted to drop the Libra onto Earth, the Virgo II army was tasked with defending the battleship against the combined forces of the Gundams, an army of Leo Space Types led by Treize Khushrenada in the OZ-00MS2 Tallgeese II, and the Maganac Corps.[3]

Notes & Trivia[]

  • The Virgo's name is derived from "Virgo" being the sixth Zodiac sign meaning "Virgin".
  • In the flashback to Eve War at the beginning of Endless Waltz, several Virgo IIs with the same color scheme as the original Virgo were shown in addition to Virgo IIs in White Fang colors. Presumably, these units were hastily refitted before the final battle and were not repainted.
    • Strangely, some of the Virgo IIs in White Fang colors were shown to have red rather than green Planet Defensors.
  • Since the Virgo II was never used on Earth, it is not known whether or not the thrusters were powerful enough for atmospheric flight.
  • In the original manga adaptation of Gundam Wing, the Virgo IIs were easily destroyed by the Leo Space Types in the Eve Wars, as their programming was not set to target the Leos.
