The YMS-02 Union Blast is a mobile suit featured in Mobile Suit Gundam 00N. It was first mentioned in the CD drama Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Another Story: Road to 2307. The unit is piloted by Sleg Sletcher.
Technology & Combat Characteristics
The Blast is an upgraded variant version of the VMS-15 Union Realdo developed by Bell Factory. Although it possesses stunning capabilities, it is no match for the undoubtedly more advanced prototype MS, the YMS-01A Union Flag developed by the Iris Corporation.
Like the Union Realdo, the Blast was primarily designed for aerial combat. Due to this, the Blast's fighter mode is faster than the Union Flag's fighter mode, however its performance in mobile suit mode is much more inferior. Unlike the Realdo or Flag, the Blast's arms bent backward in flight mode and is more streamline.
- 20mm Machine Gun
- This rapid-fire armament is ideal for shooting down incoming missiles or small vehicles. The 20mm machine gun however is generally ineffective in against heavily armored targets like mobile suits.
- Defense Rod
- A standard defensive feature of AEU and Union mobile suits. The defense rod is a rotating rod usually connected to the elbow joint of the mobile suits left arm. The rod is capable of deflecting certain physical rounds such as bullets from a machine gun and in some cases a shot from a beam rifle by generating a plasma field.
- Linear Rifle
- A rifle that fires electromagnetically-accelerated live rounds and was one of the most advanced weapons available before the introduction of beam weaponry.
In AD 2304, YMS-02 Union Blast was the competitor of the Iris Corporation's YMS-01A Union Flag to become the next mainstay mobile suit for the Union. A mock battle was held as part of the competition, and the YMS-01A Union Flag was piloted by Graham Aker while the YMS-02 Union Blast was piloted by Sleg Sletcher. Graham won the mock battle, however Sleg's Union Blast crashed during the battle and he was killed in the process. Subsequently, the Iris Corporation's YMS-01A Union Flag won the competition, and the Union Blast was decommissioned and went into retirement.
- Although it is said that the GNX-903VS Brave (Standard Test Type) and GNX-903VW Brave (Commander Test Type)'s folding of the arms to the rear in flight mode is new and revolutionary, the method was first used by YMS-02 Union Blast, and later by both SVMS-01E Union Flag Graham Aker Custom and SVMS-01O Over Flag in their high speed flight mode.
